This is the view of the front facing camera on my 23 Limited 4Runner. Does anyone know what the black triangle thing is, and its purpose? You can’t really tell from the picture, but you can see through it on the screen.

    Oooh look, another mod.....
I think it's a safety thing. It's not a sticker either, it's something built into the software or on the inside of the lens. They're all like that. I had the same thing on my 21' Tacoma front facing camera.

Thanks! I appreciate your reply. The information you included says it’s "masking." Something to do with sense of distance. Not sure how that helps. Again thanks.

From the bottom of the black triangle to your bumper is approximately 16.4ft The masking helps you judge distance when using the camera.

If the camera goes totally black, then the distance to the obstacle is zero, if not negative.

I think the notion is that the camera's distortion creates a perception that objects ahead are farther away than they really are, so that a driver might brake too little or too late if relying on the part that's masked.

Everytime I see the horrible resolution of these cameras it makes me crazy, such a waste. What could they possibly have been thinking? My neighbors 2011 Ford edge is crystal clear, that's a 12 year old car, there's just no excuse.

I too believe this is an area that got skipped over by the bean counters in regards to outfitting the 4Runner correctly.

The Toyota lawyers think that we'd use that view for driving if the straight front area wasn't masked.

That's why I drive in reverse. Camera not masked.
