So I was stoked that the Crestone Roof Rack that I ordered from Sherpa Equipment Company was delivered 3 weeks early however I could hear nuts and bolts sliding around inside the box so I decided I should do a parts inventory prior to the installation appointment. Everything was there except for 4 of the metal mounting sleeves. You can see 4 in the pic there should be 8. There was even 4 extra bolts and 7 extra washers which just add to my confusion but I read that they throw extras in. I sure hope they live up to their reputation for customer service because I am having to reschedule my week. (BTW… I’m sure nothing made its way out of the box during shipment, these metal sleeves are too big to have gotten out. They were never put in. Evidently they no longer come inserted in the rubber blocks. If anyone out there works for Sherpa could you get these overnighted to me?IMG_1564.jpg

I did both earlier this AM when I did the inventory. I was kinda hoping someone from there was on the forum and would try and get them to me in time for my original appointment. That’s wishful thinking though, if they are overnighted Monday then a Tuesday install is a no go. I am going to go speak face to face with my install guy this AM and tell him what happened. Hopefully his Wednesday slot is still available.

FYI…. One more thing, I also ordered the C4 Summit Ladder thru Sherpa as well and was told 6 weeks on lead time but I’m not expecting that because C4’s website is saying 10 weeks lead time. I just wanted to get my stuff ordered before the Black Friday orders hit. So hopefully I’lll have the ladder installed before Christmas. Fingers crossed.

I like all of greenlaneoffroads products
I like all greenlaneoffroads products. I decided on either Wescot Design or C4 for my ladder because I thought it looked better with my rack. I have seen the reports about rust on the C4 ladder, etc, but plan on staying on top of corrosion control. Any time you combine dissimilar metals you can get corrosion. I have seen people complaining about the rusting Stainless TNuts, (where the fairing is mounted) on some of these racks. It really depends on the quality of the TNut . I remember the good ole days we would repickle stainless steel with a Nitric pickling solution if it had lost its stainless quality. I will be touching up the 3 drill holes with paint before fastening the nuts and bolts to the rear hatch though.

I don't see those metal sleeves listed on the hardware checklist. How do you know there's supposed to be 8?

I’ve watched the install video about 10 times. If you watch the Sherpa Equipment Company install video they are the very first thing the guy pops out of the rubber mounting blocks. They are discussed in the instructions and pictured inside the rubber blocks, but both Sherpa and Yota Expedition recommend fitting them over the OEM white plastic tubes before placing the rubber block in place.image.jpg

Ok. So I'm guessing those sleeves don't come pre-installed in the rubber blocks...?

They did in the past but I’m guessing since they want you to remove them prior to to install they are now coming separate from the rubber blocks.

I’m my experience both C4 and Sherpa are very quick to set things right, hopefully they’ll get it sorted for you soon.

The roof rack installation is very easy to do, even single handed. I think you have an option to save some money, if you care to that is…

    Good luck!

You have an installer for a roof rack? The entire rack is 8 bolts to mount it to roof. The rack couldn't be any easier to assemble.

I agree with both of you and could do the install no problem. It’s just so much easier with a second person plus it’s the TRD Pro Rack removal that I am not comfortable with doing. (Using a propane torch to heat the bolts) I don’t want to break off the torx bolts then have to drill and drop the liner to replace the OEM clips. Red Locktite can be a bitch! What’s funny is when the ladder gets here I think I will do that install myself. It’s a 1 person job and I’ve watched the videos and feel confident that I could do it 100%. I have no problem now that I am about to turn 57, to admit my dexterity and eyesight are as keen as they were 30 years ago.

I thought about this as well…. But have already switched my appointment to Wednesday plus for $1500 I’d like to have what I paid for. If they over night the 4 sleeves tomorrow, I’ll be a happy customer.

This is what I have heard from everyone so I’m not stressing…. when it comes to mods I have a crazy past…. I had a 2013 Audi A5 that I retrofitted LED DRLs on and it took a month of coding and 3 different ECU’s to get right…

Good luck with the install. Just installed mine about a month ago. If you need some of the rubber roof liner strips to fill in some of the gaps to prevent water from pooling, let me know I have some extra. Per Sherpa you don’t need it but my ocd had me do a bit extra just in case.

When I ordered mine a few years back, the pack came severely damaged and was missing a ton of hardware. I made a call and they overnighted the hardware to me. Always been a big fan of theirs

I'm just the opposite ... I did my roof rack solo but I'll be having someone do my ladder as there is more involved installing that and I don't want to fuck it up.

I watched (I think his name is Cody) from Yota Expedition do the C4 ladder install, I think the important step is where he folded cardboard 3 times and wedged it in at the top to keep the ladder pushed out while bolting the base down. I think this is where allot of folks have screwed up. I have heard horror stories of scratching the roof’s paint if the ladder is positioned correctly…ouch!

I'll be doing the Westcott ladder and there's some drilling involved and while not a huge deal I'd rather let someone who's done a few do it. https://youtu.be/rf0-PUgmQcw?si=pB3EF5noqkNg5REh&t=506

I came close to doing both Wescot Design for both the rack and ladder but decided on Sherpa / C4 . As far as the C4 vs Wescot Ladder they look identical to me. I do know that the C4 ladder you measure out exactly 3” on the left side of the spoiler at the top of the hatch and place masking tape as a guide - I figured that would make it idiot proof for me. And as far as the rack goes - I didn’t want it to actually touch my paint and liked the idea of the rubber block footings vs RTV as sealant on the four mounting locations. Either way, both racks/ladders look very close to one another. If I lived in AZ then Wescot Design would be a no brainer though!! Good Luck on your build!

    That was the one thing I didn't like either ;) ... https://www.4runners.com/threads/ro...-sherpa-rubber-mounts-on-westcott-rack.32622/

Update: Rack Installed and Ladder due Monday!! Well, as goes my life nothing goes w/o a hitch. The guy that did the install had no issues with getting the TRD Pro Roof Rack off and did an “OK” job getting the new rack installed given he used the printed PDF instructions and never watched any of the videos. The rack is on solid as hell. If I leave it as is, it would probably never need to be adjusted. He evidentially wanted to make sure the amount of tension on the front rubber feet was so great that (1) he put a small barely noticeable dent on the driver side of the roof and (2) my fairing actually rides a good inch too high in the front. So basically, when looking at how the rack follows the body lines of the vehicle the gap increase towards the front. As far as the tiny dent, he had to show me where it was at and the dentless repair guy couldn’t get any glues to adhere because evidently my vehicle had been ceramic coated before I bought it. Long story short, rather than scheduling with the their body shop and risk a paint mismatch, or any further issues … I took a huge discount on the installation. If. That is going to be my first ding … well what better one than one that no one else could ever find.

I have mixed feelings on loosening a bunch of hardware and removing the fairing to make adjustments but that’s most likely my next step. I’ll try and get some pics later today.

Damn, I'm sorry to hear that. At least it sounds like it's not noticeable but still on a new car when you're paying for something to be done it sucks. Looking forward to the pics and seeing the ladder on!

The front fit sit on the rubber trim in the rain channel so the dent isn't from the tension. He probably dropped it

It’s raining outside so I will skip the pic for now but just know that the rack now looks freaking awesome. I didn’t realize how drastic the change would be but getting rid of the TRD Pro Rack and going w/ a full length low profile rack. It totally changes the look of your rig. Now I can’t wait for kayak season!!
