    Nah man hard pass.

These 1GR-FE may be bullet proof, but it still and engine and needs to be maintained properly... and at that mileage, it will NEED a lot of maintenance... hell may be a rebuild is due at 200k tbh.

I was just coming here to type this.

You can find one with less miles, the same vintage, for not much more. Not that I'd be any bit afraid of owning a Toyota product with that high mileage so as long as it was maintained well, but I am focused on the financial part of the deal.

EDIT: after going back to page 1 and looking at the actual truck, I say go for it. It has a pretty good carfax report too. Someone loved that truck, it has all kinds of tasteful exterior mods. I bet it was cared for, you could always go on the Toyota Owners site and punch in the VIN to get the service history, to see if it had any repeat problems, frequent oil changes, etc... done at the dealer at least (you can also add your OWN maintenance to the service history - I do that). Just my $.02.

The dealer has lowered the price recently as you stated, they may be up for haggling. Get them down to $21500.

    Oooh look, another mod.....

Here's the CarFax report on it: https://www.carfax.com/VehicleHisto...3xomVKzsxGH8wPhm0UBn_KG-nHzOCVzXXnRECga6FdFBw

It lived most of its life in Virginia, so I'd go over the frame VERY carefully for rust. I think that's a state that gets enough snow to salt the roads, right? The CarFax shows no accidents (that's great), but doesn't show a service history. That could be because the 1st owner didn't take the time to upload that data to KBB or CarFax's website. He may have done it and kept paper copies.

It looks like the dealership did a MAJOR service on it though:

    • Vehicle serviced
      • Safety inspection performed
      • Oil pan drain plug replaced
      • Oil and filter changed
      • Spark plug(s) replaced
      • Air filter replaced
      • Brake fluid flushed/changed
      • Cabin air filter replaced/cleaned
      • Power steering system serviced
      • Antifreeze/coolant flushed/changed

Have you made a decision? Or, have we made it even more difficult?

It’s definitely more difficult now hahahaha

    BUT

I am brining the car for a pre-purchase inspection today and will be reporting back this afternoon with updates and more photos on the vehicle.

I really appreciate everyone’s input. Amazing how everyone has put their thoughts in on this decision.

Y’all I need some experience on this truck. But I might need to just walk away…

I got it inspected and it is looking as expected BUT….

    listen to this…

I test drive the car a bit and take it back to the dealership.

    PARK IT
    TURN OFF THE TRUCK
    TAKE THE KEYS OUT
    GET OUT CLOSE THE DOOR

    as im walking away…

THE TRUCK TURNS ON. it’s running right now with the engine on… in the parking lot with no keys… the dealership is flabbergasted.

    TF is going on here?

    As for the Pre-purchase inspection:

    GOOD
    frame looks great
    Test drive and runs smooth
    Good shifts
    Good power
    No leaks
    Alternator has good charge
    Paint is in excellent condition

    BAD
    - little bit of a creak in the front suspension when articulating. Might need lube? Has a 3” spacer lift from toytec.
    - need fluid replaced everything.
    - battery is almost dead. Needed a jump when at the mechanic.

That is some Poltergeist shit right there. Be smarter than the family in that movie; Run away now and do not look back. That truck has electrical gremlins. You won't want that. Gremlins multiply when wet, don't forget that!

All joking aside, I would take that as a serious sign that you shouldn't buy it. You said this is a "fun" vehicle, so it sounds like you have time to continue to shop around and explore other options. I would do that.

Does it have remote key starter? If it does, it would start if the key was pressed inadvertently.
But then again, I would not recommend this buy no matter the outcome of the inspection or test drive.

Since it's a play vehicle (purely for recreation), have you considered an FJ40? I've always wanted one of those. Great reliability, very capable off-road, they look cool and I've heard they are fun to drive. Plus you'll get lots of looks.

You'll also have the "I have three windshield wipers!" brag. For $23k I bet you can find a really nice one.

My question is how are people putting that many miles on a vehicle in 5 years? And I see it all the time on used vehicles. I drive “across town” to work everyday, take 20 camping trips a year in state, and one out of state camping trip and I only go about 75 K in 5 years. It just amazes me where this mileage comes from. I don’t need a reply on my post, I’m just baffled. I feel like I drive a lot, apparently I don’t.

It's not as hard as you think. My father did sales for Fisher Scientific in the Boston area back in the 80's and he would get a new company car every 100,000 miles, they had to order him a new car every year!

Yup. Anyone in sales drives a lot. A guy who I have been sort-of friends with for 20yrs is in sales. He averages 60k miles per year, and he does it in Ford F250/350's. His job pays for his truck, so he doesn't care that it gets shitty mileage.

Also, anyone who is a courier, is going to rack up miles on their vehicle. The million mile Tacoma guy is a medical courier. I think he averages 1k miles + per week.

    I know it’s crazy right.

well I learned a good lesson today on buying a high mileage vehicle.

spend time with the car. Spend as much time as you can to see if any anomaly comes to the surface.

Its always a challenge buying used.

Shop around and don't be in a hurry especially if you don't NEED a vehicle. The market is getting better everyday now.

Thats the damn truth. I do not need a vehicle. I probably drive 300 miles per month and already have another vehicle for the family.

Ill be waiting… ill join the 4Runner club eventually…

That's the FJ Cruiser that has the 3 wipers, FJ40 is the 60s/70s leaf sprung vehicle the FJ Cruiser is supposed to look like.

I really think 80 series LandCruiser is the answer. Way cooler and more capable than the 4R and FJ, and values are strong. I drove one around SoCal for a few weeks, and they're definitely comfortable enough to be a DD.

You're right, I was thinking of the FJ Cruiser. I know some people refer to that model as the FJ40; which I did accidentally.

I definitely got confused by the 3 wipers comment since I have a 2014 FJ Cruiser and 1978 FJ40. FJ Cruiser will be sold when my new 4Runner arrives in the next few weeks.

...talk about a vehicle holding its value. In 1978, FJ40 MSRP was around $7,000. Average sale price used right now is in the $35k range. 500% appreciation.

That's true. Worst case they maintained 100% value over 45 years of service in addition to whatever life remains (which most seem to feel is quite a bit if the market values them at $35K).
