As I write this I am sitting 30 feet up a tree deer hunting (bow). It’s 28 degrees F. When I got out of my ORP, the lock pad on door handle wouldn’t lock vehicle. I opened door and display showed the key symbol indicating weak signal. I locked using the door switch and closed door. The unlock function worked on fob. I’m assuming battery is weak. I’ll try my other fob when home after hunt. I also noticed when I approached the 4R in garage this AM the puddle lights on side mirror didn’t turn on. But was working last week. All symptoms of weak battery. I got the 4 R in April. Anyone had early fatality of key fob battery?

Yes, both our 4Runners required key fob battery replacement very early. Replacement batteries have been going strong. CR2032 on my '20. Takes 30 seconds to change so easy fix.

    Oooh look, another mod.....

I can't help you with your problem, but I'll gladly buy all the back strap you got! Oh, and if you have any deer sausage, I'll buy that too. Thanks. :)

The new fobs are always transmitting signal, so battery will go out faster, especially when it's cold. To make battery life longer you can turn off fob when you away from your truck and keep fob in inner pocket when it's cold outside.

    Same as scanny mentioned above.

With proximity system, The batteries do need to be replaced more often than a standard keyless fob/remote. I have a 2022 and already have had to replace both remote batteries. Even keep an extra two in the console due to this.

Have turned off proximity at times (When I remember to do it as the process cancels when you physically press the unlock button) as I had read that the remote is continually sending a signal "checking" to see the distance to activate keyless entry and puddle lights.

Got an alert about a new Bowtech coming out for 2024 but have yet have time to check it out...

Hold down lock and press unlock twice, Will flash the red led several times as confirmation. This will render proximity and touch entry inop.

I got some cheap batteries off of Amazon and the replacement rate for them is crazy! They're definitely not top quality. Maybe Toyota uses these in their key fobs. :(

At least the 4R fob batteries are easily replaceable. Fob batteries for my '97 Outback had to be replaced at the dealer because they lost pairing with the vehicle when they died, and they both had to be done together when one of them went. Fortunately, my 2010 Outback worked differently.

I only had to change the battery for the fob on my 2016 Limited once after 4 years. On my 2020 Pro, I never had to change it in the 3 years that I owned it. The 2023 Pro is too new to say anything yet.

The smart key system consumes the battery pretty quick. Per owner's manual:

What's your 4Runner's build date shown on the doorjamb label?

My Corolla’s keyless entry just started acting up after 10 years. It seems to happen when there is moisture. Prob the same system.

bought mine new in Feb 2022 and both fobs still have original batteries and both still work. Guessing i'll have to change the battery in the next few months based on their supposed lifespan

Believe it or not I’m doing European Mount myself. I have done 3. I have nicer bucks already shoulder mounted. I don’t like leaving the antlers with Taxidermist 1 year or longer. And it’s gotten very expensive. I attached a picture of my European mounts. The top rack is 8 pt killed with rifle. The center rack is 10 pt killed with compound bow. The bottom rack is 9 pt killed with crossbow.
