    Ridge Grapplers look good but I’ve read that they aren’t that great in the snow and they get really loud around 25k-30k miles.

    I agree Mike, I had them on the tundra and 4Runner and I did not think they were that good in the snow. That’s why I went with these getting something different.

    Anyone have any thoughts on the STD load rating vs the E-Load rating for these tires?

    I understand sidewall thickness, plys, tread depth, and sharp rock penetration protection come up. I guess I am trying to determine if there is truly any concern when choosing. I see a lot of people running these and they never say what load rating just the size.

    All this is coming from a SoCal weekend warrior that daily drives their 4runner. Not really a rock crawler. Lots of fire roads/services roads, quite often run into really rutted out and rocky sections of trail that you could see sharp rocks. Current tires are E-load for the insurance aspect.

    I have the XL load rating. There is only 2 ratings on the 265/70/17’s.

    If the 285’s come in both of those ratings the XL is the lighter wheel.

    So here's my take on this. Keep in mind I'm no tire expert, these are my own opinions.

    I'm looking at this tire for mine, I'm about to lift it 2 in in the near future and am debating whether to stay with the stock size, or go with the 285s. I really want to do 255/80, but I do not want to run an E load tire.

    That said, whichever size I decide to go with, I'm going to stick with the XL. I looked up the weight of the 285s, it's 48 lb for the XL, which I think is reasonable. I'm trying to keep tire weight down. My line of thinking on the durability of these is that they have a pretty aggressive sidewall with a lot of rubber. I'm thinking that that extra rubber will help prevent rocks from puncturing the tire while aired down, despite how many plies or whatnot are actually in the side wall.

    Mine is a DD, I put on close to 400 pavement miles a week on it. I'm concerned with a heavier tire causing a stiffer ride. If all I did was offroad, I would probably want to go with a heavier duty tire, but considering 99% of my driving is on pavement, I want to account for that.

    If more tires were available in a c-load, I would compromise and get that.

    I myself wasn't sure when I made my tire purchase, I bought a semi-aggressive AT that's 51-lbs e-rated 285 hoping that would be a good compromise.

    Just want to echo this. Every forum will scream E load E load E load. Yeah, if I had a dedicated offroad rig that I trailered to an offroad park, sure, get the heaviest, toughest rubbers you can. But let's not kid ourselves. Yes we all like to pretend like we're out smashing the Rubicon every weekend but in reality we're driving to work, or picking up our kids. Getting 65 pound tires for a daily is retarded, and you're getting 96% capability over the 95% SL rated tires give. If you don't care about milage, and you need E load because you're rocking a steel roof top tent and overland trailer over King of the Hammers, get the E's (screw it get the F load then). For the rest of us, SL load will serve you just fine for all your rock warrior Saturdays.

    That's why i went C load. IMO E load comes with too much baggage for not a dedicated offroader.

    I have a set of Mickey Thompson 285/70/17 BAJA BOSS A/T tires on my 2018 TRD. The rims are RR6-H 17X8.5 0 offset with raw billet protection rings / black bolts. I love the setup, only have 4 months on setup. The only problem was the balancing. I tried using balance beads instead of weights. I had a bad vibration after 40 mph. The company paid to have beads removed and to have them forced balanced.
    Garage said the problem was not enough beads put in. I did call the company and asked how much weight should be put in before installing them.

    That's a good looking setup with the polished lip!

    Road force balance is needed on these 4runners. When you have your tires road force balanced you can ask the shop for a runout report if the number exceeds 20 you might always be fighting a balancing issue. 4runners are hyper sensitive.

    I know I'm not a 4 runner owner but keen to get some more snow driving reviews on Mickey Thompson Baja Boss A/T tires. I live in the PNW and just replaced all five new Wrangler M/T tires with Mickey Thompson Baja Boss A/T tires since I often drive across to Whistler BC (we live right next to the border). My previous truck had Blizzaks in there and they had amazing snow handling. Unfortunately my new truck a 2024 GMC Sierra 2500HD AT4X AEV Edition came with 18"/9" wide wheels with 305/70 R18 tires and Blizzaks are not available in that size. The Mickey Thompson Baja Boss A/T are three snowpeak rated hence chose those for all year round use. Now getting to the point I need help with. In severe weather snow conditions, did you reduce tire pressures? Recommended is 55psi and I'm running around 52 all around on this huge truck I always run empty, no trailer, no load; I know crazy, I wanted a change from driving an SUV for decades. We are heading to Whistler this Friday and then be driving there again for Xmas and New Year. Any advise will be most welcome.

    No worries, I talked to the tire installer and he advised I set tires to 48psi before heading out, since mountain elevation and temperature will help drop pressure another few psi and may go down as low as 42psi.

    Westcott lift / Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT’s / S&B CAI/ Sprint Booster / DDS3 Max PODS / TRD Exhaust
    I just got 285/70/17 Baja Boss AT’s (LT) after running the same in KO2’s (C-Load).

    Started at 45psi, dropped to 42psi, then to 40psi to 38psi and finally found my sweet-spot at 35psi.

    I love the tires so far and the ride quality is much improved at this tire pressure.

    I had to reduce pressure further since after a short ride the pressures shot up. I have since reduced them to 45psi all around and that’s what they are at right now. The truck behaved a lot better with lower pressures and wife did not complain at all during the 130mile ride. I think I may drop the pressure even further.
