    Hi all,

my wife has a 2020 RAV4 XLE hybrid we are looking to trade in for a new 2023 4Runner. Here are the specs:
    • 2023 4Runner off road premium, color Lunar Rock
    • moon roof
    • "quick charge cable"
    • all weather mats
Total cost before taxes is $48,234 which includes a $750 discount.

I feel like I wont have any luck getting them to come down off the 4Runner price, so I'm going to focus on trying to get as much as I can from them on the trade it. I plan to goto CarMax and 1 other dealership before hand to get trade-in values from there as a good negotiating point.

Any other thoughts on this price or tips for doing trade ins and getting the most bang for your buck??

    Oooh look, another mod.....

This is the only tip I can offer: Do not pay a market adjustment fee.

If you're lucky, you'll find one at MSRP (it's sad to say that, but in this climate, well...). If you can find a dealership offering discounts and knocking money off the MSRP (a few of us on this site have) then you have hit the freakin' lotto. Count your blessings and buy that 4Runner as fast as you can. If you don't, someone else will tomorrow.

Yes I'm a big fan of 4runners but since you are coming from a Rav4 Hybrid hope you have made your mind for a crazy mpg drop with gas prices nowadays. Back of my head I always think I could have had Rav4 Prime and have the 4runner for the weekends. But I think I'm very addicted to 4runner. I was playing with Rivian R1S yesterday but my brain still thinks "I love my 4runner more than this Rivian"

I have some few comments about the features:

    Moonroof-
I'm a big fan of not having a moonroof for extra headroom, better heat insulation, extra protection from common things like hail or even an accident. But sadly it's almost impossible to have a premium without moonroof yet have heated seats and turn indicators on mirrors.

    Quick charge cable-
I think this is about that dual USB instead of a 12v cigarette lighter. I like the cigarette lighter as I use my laptop charger when I need to join meetings while I go to pick my kiddo. For phone charging I have flush type high-speed charger from Amazon that fits cigarette lighter.

    All weather mats-
While I like to see 4runner badge there for the looks, I love better functionality of aftermarket mats like Lasfit and Husky. They have more coverage and excellent fitting.

    Total cost -
I prefer to buy new and atleast here in CO there are lot of in stock you can choose the color you want, kdss and Non kdss, with or without terrain monitoring system, regular led fog vs blackout led fog, etc.. So due to higher availability the bs like market adjustment will go away. Non of the sticker showed market adjustment when I look in person. Not sure about the situation where you live.

thanks for the replies everyone. here is the price breakout:
    2023-10-22_16-36.png

so its actually a little under MSRP with the "keep it wild savings" whatever that is...? this is a screenshot directly from the link that the dealer sent to me, so i'll hold him to these numbers or else I'm walking. but it does seem like a good deal and the right color, so it would be hard too.

I went to CarMax today just to get an appraisal on the RAV4. they quoted 31,000. So assuming I can get that much from the Toyota dealership, i'll be happy.

That is a pretty good deal, all the ORP in my area are selling for a little more than that.

You will get that much from the Toyota dealership.

Don't tell them what you are getting from CarMax. When they come in with lower, tell them to match CarMax and show them the sheet. When they say, "Oh I don't think we can!" then tell them that it's fine - you'll just sell the RAV4 to CarMax, and that you'll come back once that's completed.

Do not meet in the middle. Do not meet anywhere south of what CarMax is going to give you. Not a single red cent. I don't care if you'd come out ahead because of sales tax.

The sales tax thing has been tried on me, and I said point blank, "Why would I let you pay me less for the vehicle so that you can benefit from a law that was intended to benefit me? I'll gladly pay more money before I let that happen." Mission accomplished.

Another time, I just said, "Here's the deal, I'm going to give you the CarMax value. Your used car person is going to either agree to match it, or simply say no thank you. I'm fine if you don't want to match it, but do not bring me back another number, because you will be insulting me and wasting me time and I will leave." Mission accomplished.

You have as much bargaining power as you believe yourself to have. The salesperson wants to get the job done, and although the dealer may be able to easily sell the vehicle - they may find themselves having to wait for another victim. You don't have to prevail over the dealer, you have to prevail over the salesperson.

Besides, no matter what they're going to go in dry on you when it comes to fees and other junk charges after the fact once you get into the F&I part of the transaction.

I called about 10 dealerships in the last month trying to get a deal on an off-road premium. Almost everyone wanted MSRP, but nobody went over. I was able to get one in magnetic gray locally for 2000 under MSRP, but they hit me for $199 on VIN glass etching and would not come off of that. All said and done I got $1800 off of it.

if you’re anywhere near southern Indiana, message me and I’ll send you the name of the dealership. There’s another one sitting on the lot right now, but it’s silver. It’s advertised at 1500 off, but I know they’ll take at least 1800 off because that’s what I just paid. The big question is do you want to pay MSRP for Lunar Rock, because no one will deal on those right now in my experience.

    STOP.
The Dealers price is usually (more often than not) negotiable. They WANT to move that car - the Salesperson Wants their commission as well.

I found a Dealer in my State that discounts 4Runners (certain ones) to MSRP or below. I printed out the ad from their website and brought it to another Dealer, who actually had the color I wanted, and they matched the discount. Price went from $49,100 to $46,200. To be honest, it was so easy, I could've probably got the price down lower. All because I had the printout from their website. The dealership is Szott Toyota in Waterford, Michigan. Google it. Print it. Get that price matched!

Other than that, the 4Runner sounds nice. Do you want Running Boards? They are nice to have, but I dont see them on that price breakdown. Also, does it have the Multi-Terrain Monitor with the Premium off -road package? They arent very good quality picture, but as far as resale value goes, and having a nicely equipped TRD ORP, its worth verifying....

I just went through this last week so I have a bit of insight. We traded in a 2020 RAV4 Hybrid XSE that had a little over 34k miles on it, on a 2023 ORP. I got quotes from Carmax, Carvana, and the dealer I went with has a network of dealers that does a trade valuation and their network will bid on your vehicle fairly easily. I was able to get about $4600 off of MSRP on the ORP, and I got the dealer to pay $1000 more for our trade than what Carmax was offering. It helps that I "fibbed" and said Carmax was offering what I got the dealer to agree on, lol. I feel like we got a very good deal overall. I had another dealer working on a deal as well and they had knocked off about $2800 off of sticker but that 4Runner didn't have KDSS whereas the one I bought did.

damn! that is impressive. just now researching wtf KDSS is, and I dont think its a priority for us as we dont go off road much hardly at all. double so since this will be my wife's daily driver, so primarily it will be a pavement queen. but the off road premium has leather seats + is available in Lunar Rock which is what we want, so here we are.

i was wondering on if I should fib regarding what CarMax's offer is, but figured they'd ask for the dated appraisal paperwork and catch me in it if I did. not sure what I'll end up doing on the spot in that regard, depends on how the conversation goes. At this point, they know I am pretty interested in the vehicle so I doubt I can coax them into coming down off MSRP any more than they already have (~$700), so my best bet is to get as much as I possibly can from the trade-in. As @bassist said, I will not be accepting any less than the CarMax offer (or else I'd just sell it to them) but I can hopefully do a bit better with some luck.

I’m not a fan of lying.

Last car I traded in, I kept my mouth shut and they came in above CarMax.

KDSS helps with the on road feel and it would be a benefit if anything while on pavement.

I told the sales guy I wanted what was equivalent to $1000 over Carmax’s offer and he took it after I said I had Carmax give me a number on it. I feel like I got a great deal though.

I’m about to get new tires already though. I couldn’t negotiate that into the deal and it came with Bridgestone Duellers which I am not looking forward to for the winter. Looking at the Duratracs as I like Goodyear.

Car dealing is the one time I don’t mind lying as you know they do it boldly. Why not play them at their game?

we actually both love the RAV4, especially with it being the hybrid model it has a ton of "get up and go" to it and gets great MPG. but we have 2 big dogs (great pyrenees) that we like to take with us when we can either to family across the state or on vacations when it makes sense. sadly, the RAV4 is just really cramped with both dogs and even a minimal amount of luggage. on longer trips you can tell the lack of room stresses them out and I'm over it at this point. The 4Runner will solve this.

the MPG will be cut in half most likely, but oh well. neither of us drive alot, her RAV4 for example we got in summer 2021 and it just now has 18,000 miles on it.

Is the 4Runner going to be big enough?

You might want to consider the Armada, which is Nissan’s global competitor (Patrol) to the Land Cruiser.

Mine as well, but knowing a car purchase is a major expense and impacts my family's budget I want to be sure I'm getting the best deal possible and not getting rolled over.

See what KBB trade value is. Also, dealers these days have a program and they can see what's out there (not just what's listed on sites), what the going price is and what the demand is. Demand is likely good on a RAV4 Hybrid, so that should work in your favor. KBB will give you a pretty good idea of what to expect.

following up here... got $28,600 for the RAV4. Paid ~$33,000 for it back in July of 2021...got the 4Runner for the price listed above plus tax and some $300 dealer fee that they would not budge on. The way I see it, we got a decent price on the 4Runner (considering its lunar rock), and paid less than $175 a month to drive the RAV4 for the past two years....so I'm happy. Maybe could've done better with more patience, but I'm happy to have it all done with. The important thing is that I don't feel like I got screwed, other than the 8% loan but we'll pay it off earlier or re-fi when/if the market turns...

As for the 4Runner...we love it :burnrubber: the RAV4 was a great car and honestly no real complaints but the 4Runner is just a vibe. Hard to drive it and not have fun, even on pavement...

My only complaint is this: how the hell is a 2023 vehicle not going to have an auto setting for the headlights.... That's maddening.

I know it's a done deal for you but this might help others.
We had the time to spend quite a few hours at the dealer and we have an excellent credit score.
What worked for my Wife & I was the fact that she is a negotiator of little speaking. She doesn't say much as she scowls at them.
When we got lead into the "rape-room", the saleslady already knew that I was jonesing to buy this 4R. That said, it was up to her
    to talk with my Wife.
They had their "No haggle price", ok fine but, we had 2 vehicles to trade in.
A '10 Rav4 V6 Sport and a '14 Tacoma 4x4 DCTRDOR, which was a big disappointment for me because I like all the previous Toyota P/U's that I've owned.
Any how, in the rape-room, my Wife just kept saying no to their offers of $$ for our trade-ins. They'd leave, go jack around a bit, come back in and offer $$, and no again.
Lunch time comes around and they offer to buy us lunch and we said no, we'll pay for our own, thanks.
In the end, they came down on their price and they increased our trade-in price to a monthly payment that we were good with and we paid it off early with no penalties as negotiated in our contract.

We know that they made a profit from our trade-ins, either through resale or wholesale. And the saleslady worked hard for her commission and hopefully made her a better negotiator.

Before you trade in your hybrid, expect no more than 16 mpg from the 4Runner in the real world, on a good day. I get 14 and under, after mods.
