My wife was driving our 22' Limited early yesterday morning on a 2-lane highway looking into the sun. Apparently the TPMS light had come on but with the sun in her face and her sunglasses on she didn't see it. The tire (passenger rear) went flat at highway speed.

Today I'm having to purchase a new tire instead of a simple flat repair (1 roofing nail in the center of the tread pattern - nowhere near the sidewall) because she drove too far and buckled the sidewall.

Question - is there a way to have the TPMS do an audio alert in addition to the light coming on? I can't find that option anywhere in manual. Sure would have saved me some dollars today if that can be enabled somehow.

Anyone know if this is possible?

Funny you started this thread. It reminds me that I need to take my truck into the dealership for my TPMS issue.

In the last 9 days the warning light has come on in the dash AND the headunit had a text pop up alerting me that I need to take it to the dealership to get checked.

The flashing light goes away (on the dashboard) after a few minutes/miles. It always occurs while I'm driving, so it's not safe to snap a picture of it and show you what it will look like. None of my tires are flat or even low, but the warning coming on the headunit is new to me.

Now that I think about it, it's a different issue than are having, because you actually have a flat/low tire. Mine may have hardware issues.

It's amazing how diverse the universe of 4Runners is. We have 2 and use them for entirely different purposes.

On my 21' Venture, I intentionally lower the tire PSI when headed out on the beach near our house. But on the wife's 22' Limited, it needs to stay aired up all the time and let her know when it's lost PSI. It spends most of its time on the road and lots of that road time is highway time 70+ MPH - although near our house the pavement ends and it gets muddy when it rains and fulltime 4WD is perfect for this environment and for her to not have to think about it.

So, I really do want to figure out an audio warning for the TPMS on the Limited - but not the Venture.

The solution: Drive with your wife at all times, staring at the dashboard. When the light comes on, yell...as LOUD as you can.

    "Hey, check your tires lady!!!"

    ....what could go wrong?

This probably goes beyond the current intelligence level on the Gen 5 ECM, but the TPMS triggers would work like this:

    A. If the vehicle is travelling at highway speed (or any speed above a specified threshold) and the TPMS is triggered by a decrease in PSI, a visual warning (light) and an audio is presented.
    B. If the vehicle is started and hasn't moved for a couple hours and the TPMS is trigger by low PSI (as might be the case on a cold morning), the light is presented but not the audio.
    C. In any scenario, if the TPMS audio and visual warnings are presented and the driver wants to cancel the audio, the return button on the right side of the steering wheel would cancel the audio until the next startup.

The TPMS sensors in the wheels are triggered by motion - by the wheel rotation when driving. When there is no motion they turn off to save power (there's a tiny battery in each sensor). That's why the owner's manual says to drive a few miles before getting a correct tire pressure. From your symptoms I'd say one of the batteries in the TPMS is dying so the sensor will need to be replaced.

Could be another problem then...those batteries last up to 10 years or more.

I hope I don't have to depend on a sensor to often. I usually notice flat tire
How do you swap sensors and get ECU to recognize them? I come from check with air gauge every week sensory. They invented TPMS because lazy people in Ford Exploders with Firestone tires at 26 psi hauling 2500lbs on Florida interstate at 85mph in 98° heat. Can't imagine why they failed.

Read your owner's manual. There is a section in there about "Registering" a new set of TPMS sensors. You select "Change Wheel Set" - in other words, putting on a new set of wheels with difference sensors in them. Go through that procedure. Then go through the "Initialization" procedure, also outlined in your owner's manual.

Borracho Locco. mine is doing the same. 2022 SR5P. started last summer. Only on the highway afer I either slow down because of traffic or get off the highway it goes away. I took it to the dealer, they said to bring it in when it was on. It's impossible

I brought mine to the dealership while it was happening and they were kind of baffled. For the record, when the notification pops up on your radio, it is stored in the history. The dealership showed me where to find it. It's under settings & maintenance I believe? But they found the several dozen times that it happened.

Now, because I bought aftermarket tires RIGHT after I bought my truck, they were going to charge me to do a full diagnosis. The dealership did reset everything (all codes, alarms, etc...). That was over two months ago and it hasn't happened since. I don't get the low tire pressure warning light on the dashboard and I haven't gotten a pop-up notification on the radio.

....but the TMPS still doesn't give me a read out.

Thank you Locco for that info. I do have all those reports saved. I found that info on the radio a while back when o was fooling around.

I did have a bad month just before this all started . Found 2 Sheetrock screws in one tore and 1 in each in 2 other tires NOT at the same time. Was at the tire shop 3 times getting the tires plugged just before this all started.

had 2 different families in the neighborhood having work done, couldn’t track down the lazy contractor.

Anyway it’s happening sooner and more often now only on the highway.

I’m going to bring it to the dealer tomorrow

thank you Pal for your assistance
