What parts are most likely to break while off roading?

Forest roads and mall crawling for me lol

 

Going to be installing low profile bumper and winch so I guess that solves the valence problem up front.

 

I am getting this with the 10k gen 3 Smittybilt winch

 

For everyone getting the low profile bumper, I would strongly suggest thinking about how you plan to address the approach angles in front of the tires when you decide on your bumper of choice. Viper cut, bumper extension, or full bumper...really, you're going to want something.

 

The bumper will be steel, so who cares

 

That's the just center part.

You have two giant pieces of plastic that you need to deal with on either side of it that represent issues with approach angle.

If you get a low pro bumper that has available high cut extensions, then you're set. If you go full bumper, you're set...

...but before you go with a low profile bumper that doesn't have any sort of "wings", you need to decide whether a viper cut is something you'll have to do, and if you're fine with something that isn't really integrated with your bumper setup.

 

Yes, but I don't think the existing approach angle is going to get any worse. The center silver part gets replaced, that's all

 

Get you a trail made viper cut. Just cut off the shitty part that got chewed up I guess.

 

Oh, it won’t get worse, but why not think a step ahead and have a solution that has an upgrade path built in.

Sometimes you can pull the bump cover off if you are unlucky.

With my rear bumper, the full cover upper back in just fine, so it’s just a new valance for me back there because rear bumper needs to wait on front bumper w/winch, and possibly exhaust and more skid plates.

Lift is coming last I think - unless the labor to swap over rear springs only isn’t very much. Don’t want to get a lift before I go rear bumper because I want to ideally get the right springs after the weight has been added.

 

I am doing it for the winch, not approach angle.

 

You’ll want the approach angle. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow.

But soon enough.

It’s annoying really - all about aerodynamics for fuel efficiency, but those corners and the rear bumper are the weak points.

The corners are annoying because when it comes to getting a tire up on something, it does limit you a bit.

Sorting the corners also should give a bit more clearance for a taller tire if you move the caster forward too.

 

CVs are always at risk when bouncing around with a heavy foot. The Plastic front and rear is the first thing I had to fix, finally just went steel in the front and finally just took the rear plastic and tossed it.

 

I haven’t done a viper cut, and haven’t scraped the plastic on my bumper yet. Even if it did, the scratch would be on the bottom, so not that visible. It really does have more clearance stock than I’d be willing to use, if I’m honest.

Viper cuts will also make it easier for salt spray to get where it shouldn't be. I drive too much in winter, so I really want to avoid that.

 

The rear bumper, on the other hand…lol

 

Mine was alignment issue. When I noticed wear pattern developing on a new tire I had it aligned and they only had specs for Trail, SR5. They had to call and get alignment specs for a Limited. I am assuming that different suspensions have different specs. After that my little gitter about 60mph were away. That's what I have learned. I don't trust anyone to work on mine unless I am watching.

 

I’ve scraped both sides of bumper outside of the valance.

And the center.

All visible.

The center is down to the classic spotter/driver not being perfectly calibrated, and so I thought that I had slightly more time to react when being told to stop than I did. My fault ultimately, especially because of the camera system.

I have no freaking idea where the other bits came from, but it was likely all the same trip.

Quarry Meadows out in Tomah, WI has got some serious terrain. Like, I wouldn’t advise a stock vehicle go there and expect to not get some damage. Even some built vehicles were having issues…on the “green” group run.

This is my daily driver, but salt gets everywhere in the winter. I have a subscription to a local car wash that does underbody real well, so I’ll be hitting it basically once a week in the winter give or take.

 

Me at quarry meadows on the radio: “Uh, is my bumper hanging off?”

Guy behind me: “Looks fine from here?”

Later, after we yanked me back after getting high centered due to the break over angle going down a hill, he told me that he could tell the silver bit was loose, but figured it would just cause me stress as he causally leaned on the side of the bumper cover itself to get the clips to click back together.

Seriously want to get either the Dissent or Victory rear bumper when money allows. Victory already has the BSM relocation brackets, and Dissent is supposed to issue an update soon regarding whether their brackets do the trick to keep compatibility.

 

Well I don't abuse mine but I don't know of anything breaking. Stabilizer link if it's hooked up. I only found 4 grease points on mine and slip joints have seals to keep out debris. I have a Milwaukee 18V grease gun 2 speed and you can dial number of pumps per trigger pull so you don't pop seals and 2 different pressures
