Well, today's the big day. Installation day. Waiting for the Fedex truck to deliver the TB. I'll let you know how it goes.

Nah, you don't owe me anything. It's been a ride.

Glad she's running better. Next on your list needs to be replacing all the vacuum lines. I bet they are rock hard. Have you ever replaced your SC oil?

I'm interested to know what your Toyota "mechanic" would say about your fix as he claimed you had a special TB.

Uhm yeah he said he was searching high and low and ‘couldn’t find my specific TB.”
Listen to this s***. He sent me a text message and told me he had another customer that needed the same part. Wants to know where I found my throttlebody.
I’m like………uhm, no idea but good luck to you?

Nice. I'd tell him to call his TOYOTA dealer parts department with the VIN like everyone else does. Bonus points if he actually works at a TOYOTA dealership.

...or ya know...let him read this thread.

Responding to this...as I didn't realize you had a 2023...these issues need to be addressed after ~10 years and FAR outside any maintenance schedules for a new car. The things I mentioned don't start happening until about 150k miles...at least on third gens. You can go 15-20 years as I did for some but things need to be inspected. When rubber starts getting hard, like the vacuum lines do, it's replacement time. Plugs and wires go for 100k-150k roughly.

It will be an adventure. I seem to be on the road to doing most maintenance myself, which I did for my first 22 years of driving (and on my family's cars for several years prior), but I let the pros handle my Outbacks for the last 25 years. At least most things in the 4R are more easily accessible.

    Negusm,
TB assembly replaced, driving great since last Thursday.
You’re not going to believe this - check engine light and VSC lights just came on again - just like last time. WiTTF

Post codes. Those lights don't mean anything. You may be having different issues.

Nothing to do with the TB. Check your gas cap. Otherwise you can clear it and hope it stays away.

You can replace your gas cap as a cheap attempt to fix it. Or you can do a smoke test to try to find the leak.

I replaced my cap and it didn't help so I opted to just replace pretty much the entire evap system as the furl tank had to be dropped and it's all a bunch of aging rubber and plastic. Haven't seen that code now for a year or two.

Good thing is that this is about the most benign engine code. If you have to pass emissions you will need it checked. But it's just a small leak in the fume recirculation system.

replaced gas cap - didn't fix anything. Lowered the spare tire and there are a million hoses connected to that fuel system area. I can smell fuel in the a** end of the truck so the leak is back there somewhere.

You remember what it cost to replace the entire evap system?

Here's the thread I made where I posted all part numbers and costs and things you should or shouldn't need to replace: Should be correct for all 2001-2002 4Runners.

That thread I posted is in 2 parts. Cost of parts from both lists was about $690. I spent more on some parts that weren't needed. I did all the work myself. Not a super hard job but you have to be patient and careful.

In the end my gas tank is completely refurbished and all the hoses/rubber/plastic parts are brand new. Should be good for another 20 years.

Yeah, I fired the parts cannon but I didn't want to drop the tank a second time. BUT it is always good advice to figure out EXACTLY what the issue is, if you can. Smoke tests are not expensive. There was a chance as RingSteel points out that the issue could have still been with the purge valve which is up in the engine bay.

In my case, I didn't care as after inspecting the charcoal canister and hoses in the back...they were looking very bad and the tank valve and gaskets are notorious for going bad in these cars. So in all, I figured there were more failures due soon.

Since 3rdGenOwner said he smelled gas in the back, I'm 90% sure we're talking a gasket\valve in the gas tank or the charcoal canister. Again...if you're going to go through the hassle to drop the tank...just rebuild the whole thing. I replaced the sending unit and the fuel pump too. Again...was cheap and easy while I'm already in there.

What's funny, if you read the thread I linked to on me rebuilding my evap system, that's the one part I replaced which I think probably won't ever go bad.

The hoses connecting to it may leak, but that part is nearly all metal and probably not an issue unless you live in the rust belt.

Again, if unsure, a smoke test from a shop should clue you right in.

I'm smelling gas up high in the fender well. I dropped the spare and flashlight checked everything in/around/near the charcoal canister. Couldn't see anything amiss; I know a visual inspection doesn't mean s***

Yeah, I always drooled over impact wrenches, but for many years had no reason to buy one. The first time rotating my own tires made it worthwhile. Unfortunately I'll have to do it 4-5 more times to break even. A lot more than that to justify a Badlands floor lift.

Negusm. Son’s 2020 Tacoma won’t engage the 4x4 system. He thinks it’s the front diff actuator.
    Any ideas?
