Don't ask me about the pic in the article. I have no idea. o_O

Using material developed by Idemitsu Kosan will allow Toyota to commercialize these energy-dense batteries by 2028.

It's the first major update on the company's plans to be the first to offer these next-gen batteries. Toyota says the new technology will eventually enable EVs to go 932 miles on a single charge and power up in just 10 minutes, due to the higher energy density.

Every new battery tech article for the last 10 years has been crazy click bait. I didn't even read it to know as much.

    Should be a meme.

    To quote the article:

Using material developed by Idemitsu Kosan will allow Toyota to commercialize these energy-dense batteries by 2028.
But Toyota says Idemitsu has been working on developing the "elemental technologies" for the batteries since 2001, five years before Toyota began pursuing them in 2006.

So they plan to make more progress in the next 5yrs than they've managed in the last 22yrs? They've been churning out batteries since 2001 and they haven't figured out a way to make a better battery until NOW?

I'm throwing the bullshit challenge flag out on this claim.

This is great stuff, interesting reading both sides.
Haha, Climate Catastrophism panic certainly spread like a disease. Like the plandemic covid mind virus!
I've said it before, every battery powered device I've ever owned has failed me faster than I was promised.
There's nothing green about Lithium-ion in my opinion. So you introduce new higher energy dense batteries, where TF do all the worlds old batteries go

Hard to believe they were reluctant, just look at that sand plug. They would be shifting all over it.;)

Though I do agree. And Toyota is probably trying to distract people from the fact that the BZ4X EV is selling about as well as a ventilated condom.

Exactly Zero. Zip. Nada. Completely stock. Even has the factory air in the tires.
So 900+ miles? Assuming efficiency doesn’t markedly increase (it won’t/cant) and my Tesla is quoted as around 300watt/hours per mile, that would be a battery of approx 270 kilowatt hours. Give or take. Hell, make it fun. Let’s say the efficiency has doubled and you only need 130 kilowatt hours. So if that battery is discharged to say 80% depth of discharge; because it’s anxiety provoking to run their car go down below 20% charge- that means you need to recharge up to 90-100% (again, folks don’t usually fully charge cos it’s hard on the battery). So that’s say 100 KW hours. And you are able to do this in 10 mins. So that’s a charging power of 600 Kilowatts. For a 800v pack, a current just shy of 800 amps. If these are magic batteries with 1600v packs, that’s still 350 amps. There will be exactly zero charging outlets capable of more than half a megawatt. House outlets do 1.4 kilowatts. A 230v welding circuit is about 10 kilowatts. House electric panels do 200 amps max. Or 40 Kw.

    Read the article, thank-you sir
With all due respect. I've learned, like many things in todays world, the truth isn't always what you read and what you think it is. Things like the household Recycling program is phony, the whole movement is fake, the numbers are baked your stuff doesn't get recycled anywhere remotely close to what your led to believe. We're being told the same story when I comes to EV batteries, but what concerns me more than not believing the narrative, is storage of these inevitable old batteries that don't magically get fully broken down and separated in a timely manner.
Car & Driver of course will right glowing articles about how, "Odds are it'll be carefully collected and broken down into its component parts, at which point its fundamental components will be made right back into more batteries—perhaps for your next EV." I don't buy it.

    Great article quotes :
"An EV battery pack is assumed to be at the end of its life when it has no more than 70 to 75 percent of its original capacity. Hitting this mark may take 10 years or more"
"The challenge of reuse is particularly difficult because new cells are dramatically cheaper now, to the point that it's no longer clear there's a business model in buying, transporting, repurposing, and reselling used cells from older battery packs."

You asked where the batteries are going, I shared the article to where they are going. Believe what you want, I know we don’t live in a perfect world and I don’t agree with the forced EV movement. However, I do think it’s wise to develop an alternative to gas powered vehicles and let the market could figure it out.

I think ICE engines will one day be like salt in the movie Demolition Man where future humans will look at ICE engines as these archaic contraptions that spewed pollution (and among other variables) shortened our lives and therefore became illegal long ago.

Regarding options. We literally have government to take our options away. So companies don't just dump their toxic waste upstream from our water sources as as been done in the past. Again, I think ICE engines will one day be looked at in this same light.

That said....I don't have an EV. There's not an EV on the market I would want to drive. I wish there was. But just not yet for me.

I want the market to dictate our options.
We have a RAV4 prime, it’s a plug in hybrid. We get about 50 miles per charge and about 35 mpg when we use gas. I was not a fan of EVs before we bought this, but I see now they have so much potential. That being said, I’m not sure I’d by a full EV right now, but it wouldn’t take much to convince me, but I’m not letting my ICE 4Runner go for a long time.

Tyranny....huh. odd hill to die on. Let's see how it all looks 40 years from now. I'm curious.

I do agree with you though. When people tell me they get "x" range on their tesla I like to say, "sometimes I get 16 mpg freeway with my 4runner"

It's the Akio Toyoda Buttplug Of The Gods. Engineered for maximum "oh what a feeling" from Toyota EVs. It makes rednecks' sacks shrivel before they, too, get stretched and exhilarated by the genius of Akio Toyoda.

Also, this stops becoming a prank call and an actual request at a hardware store.

Honestly 16-17mpg in this day and age just feels bad. I can afford it but I don’t like feeling as if I’m wasting gas. My other vehicles are diesels, or all electric. I’ve owned hybrids and I would agree a ROBUST, reliable ICE/hybrid power train is optimal for consumer vehicles.

I think Toyota could easily engineer a brand of hybrids that used a minimal of sensors and electronics; used very robust reliable batteries (LTO; even supercaps would help) and engineered it in such a way that if the hybrid system failed, it could be locked out and not affect ICE operation.

they could have a new brand- the LandCruiser™️ Hybrid System. Super durable parts, redundancy, and prove them in off road environments and competitions. Make it a retrofit to existing 5 Gen 4R. All you’d need is a power unit doing 70kw sitting between engine and transmission with a 3-4 KWhr battery supply that could fit under the seats. Logic would tie into main harness since its throttle by wire already. I think all the sensors it needs are already there and CanBus would see them or could be integrated into the power unit.

    Hmm. Don’t give me ideas…

Agree. I've thought more about gas mileage in the past couple years than ever. Quite a few friends now have EVs or hybrids and they are getting ridiculous gas mileage compared to my 2008. Really hoping the next 4Runner is good.

2024 Tacoma Hybrid gets 24 mpg in the city, 30 mpg on the highway and 27 mpg combined. Hope we're somewhere around those numbers. 30mpg on highway would be amazing but I know the 4Runner is slightly heavier so probably not.

Agreed. My V8 Silverado work truck gets better mileage. But, a 4Runner isn't likely to require major engine work with under 50K miles, so that's a plus.

One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 34 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 32yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
Until the EV charging infrastructure makes galactic advances it is a moot point.

this is the 50,000th supercharger. I charged with it this weekend in Roseville, northern CA. I can go anywhere in the continental us with my Tesla due to their infrastructure for charging.

it works if it’s just Tesla; start adding other
Vehicles and it won’t be sufficient. Not close.

I don’t believe most people understand just how environmentally unfriendly it is to mine and refine lithium. It is about as bad as it gets.
