Hello I have a 5th Gen TRD 4Runner recently got rear ended and now I need to replace the rear bumper I was thinking it is a good time to upgrade to a steel bumper anyone on here done this? And do you have any recommendations for a good after market bumper? I also have the backup camera and would like to keep that function

Welcome! Sucks to get rear ended, but lemonade from lemons. Was there any damage to the crossmember where the hitch receiver is?

Have you looked at the Ironman bumper for the 5th gen? I think I kinda like it…not sure. But it’s relatively cheap and gets you some additional recovery points.

My first thought was this one too!

If you don't need swing outs and all that garbage on it, this one looks really clean.

Just curious what is the plan replacing the bumper. In my case body shop was not interested in getting insurance money for the fixes and I pay extra for the aftermarket bumper.

I didn't want to take the risk of accepting the check from insurance and do the repairs on my own as if there is any unseen damages and needed ton more money to fix I'm screwed.

    The ironman one
I’m kinda iffy on the tubular bumper…but, for the price I’d be half tempted to skin the outside with some some sheet. It would have nice round edges, look like a plate bumper, but still have decent strength. Some of the other ones are sooooo expensive. And heavy.

Well if a proper inspection of the damages is done and it was determined only to be cosmetic I would say go for it. Insurance companies (while they are sketchy at best) should be doing a full review of the damages and the vehicle should be brought into a professional for inspection and reports should be submitted for total cost of damage. How else is insurance supposed to determine whether it should be impounded or not? Once the inspection is done and they say everything is good I say take the check and use it to upgrade.

I have the c4 rear bumper with double swing out. While I know that is not for everyone. There are a few things to consider. Aluminum vs. Steel. I have a full aftermarket suspension. If you don’t and you throw a few hundred pounds in the back that starts changing things. If I could do it over I would probably go with Aluminum. You don’t have to worry about rust, not as strong as steel but stronger than the stock bumper. I would look at heftyfab if I was you. They had a huge lead time when I was looking.

If you really want steel I think this one looks best (obviously impartial since I bought this one): https://c4fabrication.com/collections/all/products/4runner-overland-series-rear-bumper-5th-gen-2010

    I hope this helps.

this is true. If you like steel you’re going to want a suspension that can take it:amen:

Welcome! The ironman bumper looks pretty clean and simple providing there isn't a surprise in the frame after the accident.

Did anyone end up going with the Ironman? I'm kind of considering one for mine, but not 100% sold on it.

I wonder if it's possible to adapt a swing out tire mount to it, I'd really like to get the spare out from underneath.

    Oooh look, another mod.....
I am so glad I found out about this bumper. I just saw the price and install, and this is something I will seriously consider adding soon.
