Yeah I am trying to plan my trails carefully knowing my limits. Endless trails to pick from depending what your looking for. Rear bumper dragging is my weakest link but in analysis paralysis what I want to do with it.

Those hot tubs have decades of engine/gear oil mixed with water at the bottom. Have someone to winch you out before attempting.

Once he started bucking he was doomed. Should have backed off throttle and got winched instead he went full send.pp,504x498-pad,600x600,f8f8f8.jpg

Wonder what recovery looks like losing a wheel. I haven't seen any flatbed off road recovery wreckers. Get parts and fix on site?

Depends on what broke. Another option is to jury-rig a skid under where the knuckle was, with something like a trailer ramp, pull the vehicle out of the tub, then lift the front end off the ground with the tow truck's boom, like this:

Operator error will mess up far more. He was driving with the gas pedal instead of skill. Sending it in a situation like that is a guarantee to break something.

It sure looks that way. However, it's frightening to consider how few bucks it took in such a short interval. He might have only had 2-3 seconds to change his strategy.

This is why I'm not fan of momentum. If it can't be done slow, I back off. Man has to know his limits ;)

The guy in the video below with the white flatbed Nissan Patrol GQ drives that thing like he literally hates it any everyone in a 10 mile radius…

…and that’s not the vehicle that ends up with something breaking.

People love Land Cruisers, but the more I see the Nissan Patrol in action, the more respect I have for it.

Also, the Aussies have got it figured out with regards to the whole tray/canopy setup on their pickups.

Finally, hearing someone say they lowered their Land Cruiser and reduced weight to make it wheel better is so refreshing.

Those look like 37" tires on the stock axle. The article says the knuckle broke at the ball joints, which makes sense as the stock Dana 44 ball joints are as weak as Toyota ball joints.

Not a problem you have to worry about with your 4Runner's stock-ish size tires.

Do you know what it takes just to fit 37" tires on a 4Runner with full suspension travel without a body lift? You have to cut inner fender sheetmetal up to the headlight bowl... Those tires are massive in person.

This picture gives an idea of how steep the climb is out of that tub. Giving it gas is natural. His Jeep's axle and suspension should've been better upgraded to handle the large tires before attempting.

    Seriously.

When it comes to driving fast, slow entry on the corner is what helps you get a fast exit.

Looks like they pressed new ball joints into the axle C-fitting and put the knuckle back on, right in the tub. Rory's badass when it comes to trail repairs.

JK Rubicon on 35" tires in my group broke ball joints in 2018 by going too hard in a mud pit in a local off-road park:

I think Mr. "Tuff Guy's" ego was quite bruised. I think it was full pwnership when the 3rd gen red 4Runner passed him up at the end of the video.

I really won't like to know how much that repair and tow cost him. I never understand why people spend so much money for these lackluster Fiats.

    Cheers,

    Sean

I get it, they call it rock "crawling" for a reason. But If I can hike/bike faster then I'm driving id rather do that.

He really is. He's more skilled lying on his back in the dirt on the side of the trail than most people would be in a fully equipped shop with a lift.

One thing I noticed is that he seems better able to trail repair the Jeeps. Seems like the stuff that tends to break on Toyota's necessitates them being hauled out.

He mentioned in one of his newer videos that one of the major failures he sees with Toyotas is they blow the rear axle. He says especially on loaded up Tacomas, when climbing steep hills they start to hop, and usually that's what does them in when combined with the leaf spring wrap.

Yes, the damage was less extensive than I expected from the initial video and more easily repaired. On the other hand, upon reviewing video of the precipitating incident a couple more times, those weren't huge hops and it appeared busted by the second or third hop. I wonder if it was already compromised before that obstacle.
