Too much rust?

I’m debating buying this 2004 4runner. Everything else is looking good but I’m held up on the rust? Is there too much?

 

That appears to be mainly surface rust but the only way to know for sure is to inspect it in person and bring a small hammer to tap at the frame and other areas of concern to see if the rust has killed the frame.

Personally, that would be too much rust but I also don't live in a rust state so don't have that issue.

 

That's a borderline case. Also, it looks like they removed both the front skid and the gas tank skid, probably because they were heavily rusted. You would want to get replacements if you plan on taking it off road at all. I would probably pass myself.

 

Poke the suspect areas with a screwdriver. Anything soft or crumbly is a hard pass. That looks like surface rust. Heavy rust for sure but the frame looks solid. If parts aren't falling off I'd buy it.
You can coat the rust with POR 15 (Paint On Rust) and stop-the-rot in its' tracks.

 

I’m looking at a 2004 Tacoma that is REALLY clean in the inside but has some rust on the frame. According to the carfax it was in Minnesota for the first 10 years and 114k miles before being moved to AZ for the next 90k miles. I’m assuming most of the rust is from Minnesota.

Any advice on whether or not it’s too much rust?

Scotty called it. Look at the frame right in front of the leaf spring mount, it looks perforated.

That's probably easily fixable, but if it's bad there, where else is it bad? Could be a big can of worms trying to make all that right.

 

Looks like it to me also. Not sure how people can not notice stuff like this.

Welcome here OP @Zfrieze! Personally, the last photo especially is too much rust for me. If the seller actually allows you to respectfully inspect it a little with a screwdriver and small hammer, and it seems ight then don't listen to me, go for it

@Dillusion im really not familiar with rust so I don’t know the extent of what’s acceptable or not. I’ve seen pics of members with a surprisingly big amount of rust that said they were fine after treating it.

@djwantke i didn’t mean to highjack OP’s thread. I just didn’t want to overcrowd the forum by opening a whole new one just for a few pics related with the current thread. I’m on another forum (not car related) and it’s the opposite, we’re not supposed to open new threads if there’s already one on the topic.
