Towing 2022 Jayco Jay Feather 171bh

Ok, friends...lets play "Would you tow it?" Getting technical here, but there are too many factors for me to calculate. Im hoping someone can help. We have a 2017 4Runner SR5 with the Dobinson IMS 3" Long Travel Heavy duty lift kit (C59-701v) front & rear. We also have PowerStop brakes and calipers front & rear. I'll be using the Fastway E2 sway control trunnion hitch (8,000lbs trailer weight rating, 800lbs tongue weight rating). SERIOUSLY looking to buy a 2022 Jayco Jay Feather Micro 171BH with an Unloaded Vehicle Weight of 3,930lbs, Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of 4,995lbs, and a Dry Hitch Weight of 395lbs. Is this still too close to the 4runner's maximum capabilities even with our suspension & brake upgrades? My thoughts are that I will still need a brake contoller, transmission monitor, and possibly air bags. Thoughts? Recommendations? Thanks in advance!

How'd you decide on that WDH? It sounds like a bit of overkill for this trailer (I assumed they were matched to the trailer weight). It also sounds like it weighs a few hundred pounds, which is going to eat into your precious payload capacity.

If I needed or wanted to pull something that size, I'd be trading the 4R for a Sequoia, Tundra, or similar.

I see you've also lifted the 4R a significant amount already, which is going to make it even worse at towing.

Personally, I'd get a smaller trailer, if you want to ise the 4R. Even 6x12 cargo trailers loaded at max capacity suck to tow for any amount of distance.

 

The 4Runner can tow up to 5,000lbs, so you're well within the limit (you said the trailer is 3,930lbs). Oh, and you're right about getting a brake controller. Better safe than sorry!

 

Too heavy for me, too, especially on hills. With that much weight, the 4R will be moving slow and revving high on the way up.

SO yea Last year we purchased a '23 Salem FSX 178bhsk. Dry 3750. I'm sitting on Eibach Stage 1 truck lift. REDARC Brake controller, bunch of other non-sense stuff. But yea Gas mileage sucks. We went to Niagara Falls In July. Woof, we made it but 10mpg going up all those hills. We'll be going to a bunch of places this summer with the kids. Can't wait. #WhereToNext
