Stopped at a stop sign. Buddy smashed into me and took off. Dodge caravan with no plates. Wish I wasn’t kidding.

Bumper and hatch are in bad shape. I have a pretty low deductible for insurance, but have never had to file a “hit and run” claim before

I’m gutted. This 4Runner has less than 1500 miles on it

I am so sorry for you. That is always extremely disappointing. I am glad you have insurance, and it sounds like it is all cosmetic damage. Hopefully, the insurance company agrees to replace the damaged parts with all new parts.

And glad no one was hurt.

    So sorry for this.
I would have been very angry!
Hopefully insurance will follow through, get a new bumper. I am not sure though what are they going to do to the tailgate? Replace the whole tail gate or repair it.

    That definitely sucks!

But, let's look at it. The bumper cover is plastic and the hatch can be replaced. As long as the frame isn't damaged, you can get it back to 100%.

Hopefully you can track down the POS, but I bet they don't have any money or insurance. If anything, maybe a settlement against them will inspire them to become functional members of society.

Hopefully the rest of the weekend is better for you!

Seems all cosmetic. I just installed new Morimoto tails and they look to be ok.

the bumper I’m not too worried about. The tailgate is dented pretty bad

I wish. This is on the road to my house, no businesses but I’m hoping someone has a ring doorbell. I’m going back tomorrow morning and door knocking to ask

It’s going to be a tough repair. I’m hoping they just replace it. I have all perils coverage and my deductible is $250

It wasn’t even a big hit. I didn’t have time to snap photos of the caravan as I was shocked at the damage.

Thank god for all perils insurance.

I just don’t have the time to deal with this.

I'm sorry dude. Mine got rear ended at about the same milage as you. Got a new bumper. You couldn't tell.

At 5k miles my wife tore the rear bumper almost off by swiping this gate I made. Also dented the quarter pannel. Nothing happened to the gate. Proud of that.

Insurance covered. You can't tell anything ever happend to it. It will be ok. It sucks still but it will be ok.

Well, sadly no plates probably means you're fucked whether you find them or not. Hopefully your insurance is good.

I’m covered for at fault as well. And this is a hit and run. So I should be fine. And this is my first claim ever so I’m hoping for first time forgiveness so I don’t have to pay anything out of pocket

This sounds worse than what I’m dealing with lol.

my concern is body work. I want to make sure it looks stock and they do a good job with the repair. I’ve never had to deal with this before so I’m not too sure how it works

Glad to hear you have good insurance. It sucks that responsible people have to constantly cover for shitty assholes, though.

Go on both Google and yelp reviews. Yelp is pretty pay to play but Google isn't. So weight the average Google review more and find a well regarded shop. It will come out good. No one will know it happened but you.

Edit: lol....ok the third time....I was overlanding. I get on the radio asking if anyone wants a red bull. Driver behind me says they do. I tell them to come get it. They're walking up and I realize they left their car in drive. They have their children in the car, so I get my 4runner going a couple mph and let it hit me so I can stop his car with his kids...

Honestly I wish he felt more like an idiot than I think he did.

Just the valance which i was going to do anyway (change from silver to black) so I told him don't worry about it and thanks for giving me the motivation to finally get the new valance which was around $320. But the bumper is a littlle messed up now. One of the valance clips doesn't want to stay in. I need to take the bumper off and mess with it. No one notices but me.

Dude! we have almost the same avatar picture! twinzies!

I’m no expert by any means, but I’d file a police report, so I had documentation if needed.

Man I am sorry for you especially being new. Dang.

I’d probably see if you get a 24 allocation on a new one and get this fixed and trade up. It’s just me personally but I could not keep a new vehicle that’s been hit. It’s not that there are not good body shops out there it would just keep me up at night especially if you want to keep it for a long time

    This seems excessive lol.
It’s a 2023 trd pro. I’m not too worried if they need to swap out the hitch and bumper with new ones.
I would be losing money if I traded up. My insurance will cover the damage

If they need to do repairs, it will need to be back to stock. The hitch is dented enough that I don’t think it can be repaired. And the bumper is cracked in 4 places.

I’m calling insurance today. Nobody was injured and I don’t have photos or evidence of the other vehicle. My buddy is an insurance adjuster and said it might be easier if I just call insurance and submit the claim.
I have pretty good coverage and think I’ll be covered with zero out of pocket expenses.
I’ll report back once I speak to the claims team at TD

Hate to hear this. Lose the newness feeling so fast. Glad no one was hurt. I am really interested in what the repair or replace process looks like. The trailer hitch (bumper) bar runs across the back. If I recall that steel bar is welded to the frame and the hitch it bolted to that bar. How would they repair that steel bar if bent ? Would have to cut it out and weld in a new one. From the damage pics it looks like the van hit the hatch well above the trailer hitch bar. That would be preferable as it might not have bent that welded in bumper bar.

The hit wasn’t hard. I would be shocked if the steel was bent. Honestly was surprised that the bumper was cracked.
I’ll document the process in detail and update this thread as things unfold.

I'm with you. A good body shop should guarantee their work for the lifetime you own the vehicle. I recommend not rushing in locating a good one.

The Toyota dealer I bought it from also does collision work. I’m going through them. They’re checking it out Monday!
