Looks like he is 2WD based off the info under his username.

Sand looks soft. And your 2wd! After this ordeal do you plan on keeping your 2wd 4runner? If you do invest in traction boards and other recovery gear, straps, jacks, maybe even a winch. It absolutely sucks getting stuck and needing help from others(ask me how I know).

Glad to hear you are safely out. Put that in the experience book and check it now and then.

Yeah. I will definitely prefer not to be alone. I also want wider tires, roof mounted offroad lighting, a hitch cargo cage with gear, and suspension, and radio.

Also, um, are there central air kits available or is that just fab racecar stuff? I'm not sure what the term is or if it even exists . . . but if it does then you know what I mean

Just throwing this out there. I always wanted roof top lights but I haven't done any night driving off road and eventually realized I don't need them. So for me roof lights went to permanently on hold and maybe even a cancelled project.

People go wild with air compressor systems. I just got a battery powered mileuakee one and I've never used it off road but it's part of the kit.

I think for you, you should really consider trading your 4runner in towards a 4x4 version. If you are serious enough about going on trails to be looking at this gear, you need 4x4, and you should be modifying a vehicle with 4 wheel drive.

First I want to acknowledge there was multiple poor judgement conditions going on here.

Second, everyone is telling me to get a 4w rig 'so we can go portals'

2wd 4runner is like ... what's the point? Might as well buy a car.

Hope all is well after this mess. What did the tow truck charge for getting you? Should have called Matt's Offroad Recovery. He probably would have driven from Utah just to get the video.

Sure, the 4runner is most luxury (seating, rear window, size) and utility still.

It's really hard to beat the Eastern Sierras in the early fall or spring. Epic conditions for being outdoors and as good as it gets.

At least he was stuck in a beautiful place. :turtleride:

My first truck was a stock 2nd gen, manual, extra cab Tacoma. Not the Prerunner version so it was as low to the ground as a Camry I swear. Didn’t stop me from taking it all over the desert in San Diego. But my fabric floor mats also had 2 black lines across them from the times I had to use those for traction. I also lost a sandal, just 1, using the pair for traction another time. I only had to get pulled out once and thankfully a Jeep with a winch drove by shortly after and pulled me. He was more entertained seeing that truck out where it was rather than the typical holy-er-than-thow smirk I see more jeepsters with when pulling out anything other than a jeep.

Just teasing. I’ve been stuck a couple of times, the worst being in soft sand like the OP. In my old 2WD SR5 pickup from way, way back when.
I got out by using the side boards of the homemade bed liner I had made out of 1/2” plywood.
