Yes. It’s connected directly to the drivetrain which moves as you drive.

Ha ha, sometimes when I'm bored I keep my hand on it and enjoy the feeling how the vibration intensity changes with the revs. :p

Here is a pic my transfer case and the shifter where it comes out the top. It’s just like a tractor. Except the entire drivetrain is mounted on soft cushy rubber mounts designed to flex a good amount. The amount of movement you see in that lever is exactly how much the trnsfer case, transmission, and engine are moving around on bumps and different torque loads.

My old XJ didn't shake like the 4Runner's does.

Looks like they have a joint and an extension because the case was further back than vs these go directly into the case.

That can only mean the 4runner was completely and purposely designed around the shifter. They sat down the frame and drivetrain, and then built the body around it.

It just shows how bad ass this vehicle is. :D

That means having a knob and a full length little space in front of the gearshift was NOT the original plan!

The Runner is ok I guess.

My aunt had a new fully loaded black 4wd XJ back in like 93. I think it had factory gold pin striping. We took it out once pulling some ATVs to who know where and from what I remember, it did really well.

Those old 4wd XJs always remind me of the Jeep scene in The Goonies. “Throw her in 4wd and hold onto your hats!”

    Good pictures thanks,

What are those two pins sticking out at the top of the side that mate’s with the transmission?

This comment reminds me of the A-10 being designed around the Gatlin cannon. Amazing piece of engineering. Will be sad to see it go when it finally does

Exactly. The first thing they made was the hole the cannon goes through. Same with the shifter.:p

It's cool to see cast parts.
