    All,

Wanted to sound off and see who is having issues with a 21/22’ with white paint. My quick search didn’t yield much, but I admittedly was uneducated on Toyota’s paint issues and now wonder if this was a poor purchase.

    and feedback would be great.

I have a super white. There's some chips on the hood, but I also ride it hard and the highways around here toss rocks.

    Meh.

I have a 21 in super white. Don’t think the chips are any worse than any other vehicle ive ever owned.

i do get little oxidized / orange spots, but they make an iron remover spray that does the trick. Every summer i do the maguires ceramic liquid wax.

I have a 22 Limited in Pearl White and don't see any unusual issues with the paint. Can you be more specific about what the issues are (ie what is going wrong with your paint)?

    Thanks for the replies.

no issues yet, other than a hefty payment and fear bordering paranoia. It’s just disheartening to find out, especially on top of knowing about the frame rot.

it would be cool if we “the group” could create some sample to figure out the likelihood of issue (Porsche figured the IMS catastrophe to affect roughly 8% of cars, helping a buyer weigh the odds).

2022 Super white - Chips a lot. However, it's also super easy to touch up and match the paint. Also does a good job hiding scratches, dings and dust.

I'm borderline OCD on keeping vehicles clean and looking nice (I'm lying - I'm way past borderline). I struggle with the white because it does such a good job hiding dirt and defects that I don't have anything to obsess about and find myself having to spend more time with my family. :)

Ex - Had a rock get thrown up on the highway - hit the hood twice, chipping paint and then hit the windshield and cracked it. Took my 'mr colorchip' kit out to touch it up. Figured I'd be staring at it every time I walked to the vehicle for the next 10 years... 5 minutes later and it just disappeared. I can find it if look at specific angles under specific lighting - but it's invisible to normal people. It would have been blatantly obvious on any other color I've owned.

So yeah - the paint chips easier than any I've owned before. Also repairs easier. First white vehicle I've owned so not sure if this is a color thing or specific the super white.

    2022 Model year.

Had to return to edit, Exactly what problems have you turned up in with research regards to the white paint?

Be glad you don't have black lol. Hopefully you’ll find it as easy to overlook defects in white as others have noted.

The frame rot concerns can be mitigated with the appropriate coatings, frequent washings, and a yearly look-see to touch up the coating where it’s washed off. I use woolwax (there’s nearly a gallon’s worth of product on/in my frame).

I’m a fairly OCD type myself with cars. But the 4runner, and my circumstances, have broken me of my obsession with paint finish. I’m having too much fun with it to worry about paint too much. I’d guess that before long, I’ll be using rattle cans to touch up my paint haha. (Oddly, I only use touchless carwashes —so pinstripes from branches are ok, but not swirls )

My obsession has shifted instead, to the frame/underside, and trying to keep it free of rust despite it being it being a daily driver in the salt belt, and a weekend off-road rig that sees dirt/gravel/mud frequently. And honestly, it’s been as enjoyable spending time under the 4runner “cleaning”, as it has ever been getting that perfect shine on paint.

I use cleaning in quotations because once you’ve taken a woolwaxed frame through mud, it’s going to always look like shit. So my “clean” is a functional one, mostly making sure to hose out everywhere mud, salt, or dirt can collect, and painting little bits of rust on welds when they pop up, and painting over areas that have dragged off road. That’s why my oil changes take half a day lol, I’m constantly looking around.

there is a recall on a couple of white paint codes, related to the primer separating from the metal altogether due to performance issues with the newer “e-coatings” used in todays processes. If you search “white paint Toyota recall” there are in depth threads and bulletins all over Google.

McSpaz puts it in perspective, enjoy it and try your best to elongate its life. Such a shame that there’s speculation of discontinuation, as the options for quality vehicles is slimming every year.

I would rather walk everywhere barefoot with dysentery than drive a unibody cvt hybrid…. Yuck.

Just went out to the garage and took a strong look on the underside and saw no sign of corrosion.

    Guess we are good.

No frame rot to to report,

    Give it a few years.

I lifted my friends 4th gen and the rail literally turned to dust. In spots you could put your finger through a seemingly rigid spot, only to find the coating was the only thing left.

this is new to me, coming from different platforms (I’ve had 90s f150 trucks with zero rust 10-15 years later… but it was a Ford everywhere else…..).

Or just be proactive like alot of owners and spray the underside with woolwax/ other lanolin based products. It's 2 hours out of your life a year

Really depends on your geographic location. My 97’ Tacoma had zero frame or body rust when I sold it in 2018. I only washed it a few times a year. It spent the majority of its time in a desert environment with occasional winter driving conditions.

I just bought a white 2023 TRD ORP. I'm really hoping the new Ice Cap white is an improved paint color and not just a renamed Super White that still chips easily. Time will tell I suppose.

It is the same code# as super white. 040
So it would appear it was just renamed.

'21 in Super White. Also chips really easily. In fact the truck is at the body shop getting the rear life gate repainted right now courtesy of Toyota Canada.

Pay attention to where the spoiler meets the gate and at the corners of the trim at the rear latch.

My 2021 Pearl white definitely chips easier than other cars I had/have. Already went through one of the touch up pens. What I don't like that the touch up pearl white does not even look like the proper pearl white, more like a super white. However the pain codes match up and the service guy said it is pearl white.
Get lots of the iron /orange spots but as someone mentioned there are some really good sprays to dissolve that.
I have many chips on the front lower bumper, some on hood, A pillars, roof right behind sun roof, rear door on the plastic fender thingy.

We did approx. 5 400 mile road trips in this car other than that is is regular road back and forth to work and grocery shopping.

Hi all…newbie here. Just seeing this thread after making my deal today to purchase a Blizzard White Pearl 23 model once it arrives. My question is about the optional added protective film they put on and the protective spray. Is the film good and does it work/is it helpful? Toyocare is also an added option that includes indoor/outdoor protective spray and the dealer also sprays…so with all this spraying and film, I’m wondering if I’m going to regret this purchase or if it’s going to be ok. My runner comes with both the film and the sprays.
Also just really learning what to do about “the rot”. Totally bursting my 4Runner bubble…

Don't you know that in Japan there are no bugs or rocks/pebbles on the roadways. In all seriousness, this is probably the only pitfall in this vehicle that Im aware of.

2020 SW and yes to chips and peeling. Peeling is around body panel edges and trim.

As good as the Toyota product is, their paint sucks.

I have a white Tacoma that is peeling in several places. Toyota warranties the white paint on some of their other vehicles specifically for peeling, however, it does not apply to the Tacoma (bastards).

My 22 ORP is also white. I got the protective film on the hood. Hopefully, this will keep the hood from peeling. Time will tell.

The ppf will not help from peeling. It's an adhesion issue between the paint and the metal or between the paint and the primer. When you remove the ppf after it's life cycle you run the risk of peeling up the paint with it.

If one were to have too much bloody money would re-spraying or re-painting help of the whole car. Or would the original paint and primer need to be blasted off and then the whole car pained from scratch for it to make any difference.

I understand that it is an adhesion issue between the paint and the metal, however, if the paint doesn’t have anywhere to go due to the PPF being in place, maybe the pant will hold up longer than it did on my Tacoma. At least that’s what I’m hoping. I may be being overly optimistic but we’ll see.

Yeah it'll stay in place but it won't keep it from unsticking. Ppf only has a 5-7 year lifespan before it should be replaced.
