New car warranty and oil changes

Hi all
Bought a new 2020 so it has warranty up to 36K miles (I think) as long as I get oil changes from Toyota service or SAE certified places.
Is it worth it to keep taking my car to Toyota until the period is up? Or is it fine doing it myself, what does most people do to keep the new warranty?

I would definitely take advantage of the services. Why not?

 

It’s illegal for them to claim you have to service your vehicle with then in order to retain your manufacturer's warranty.

And it’s only your bumper to bumper that’s 3/36K, powertrain is longer, plus there’s a federally mandated 8/80 emissions warranty.

 

I think to my point and flyinhoot's point, your first two years of maintenance (oil changes, etc.) are included when you purchase the truck. Why would you not go to Toyota and have them do the work you paid for when you bought it?

 

Everytime I’ve brought my vehicle in for service they’ve managed to dick it up. Paint chips, fucking my interior up, forgetting to put my oil cap back on. After my last issue is resolved and they fix what they ducked up I’m going to go to doing all my services myself and the difficult ones at a good independent shop.

I'm sure people here could name a few. I never take mine in.

 

I guess I would consider myself lucky in that I've never had an issue with the dealer in over 20 years of owning Toyotas!

The first service apt at 5K miles and all subsequent services including oil changes are free the first 2 years. Just clarified with the dealer service dept.
So yeah I'll be taking it there for services.

When that lady tried to sell me all the extra care packages it really threw me off there.

Wait til they over tighten the oil filter housing and use impacts while rotating tires.

That lady really went to town when selling me the extra package, very misleading then.

 

Since I'm not keeping my TRD Pro long term I will let the dealership do all the work.

 

Had mine in for the 1st 15k maint.No issues, when I get home tomorrow from work I should be < 2-4 miles away from 20k. Have Oil/Filter New Aluminum Filter bowl and wrench. Gonna do it Friday!

 

Additional option warranties can have stipulations in place that require you to use their service department (that’s pretty common on the lifetime powertrain warranties), but the Magnuson Moss Act is in place specifically to keep manufacturer’s from forcing a parts and service monopoly by holding you warranty hostage.

Additional optional extended warranties can do all sorts of dumb shit in the fine print, factory warranties are legally protected.

 

so you can do the oil changes inspect the drive train fluids grease the drive shafts and rotate the tires ... all is good and you will have no problems.
many have had oil change damages when a dealership gives the vehicle free maintenance ..

I never brought my 2016 runner back to the dealership. no problems. rotate tires and grease the drive shafts on every oil change .. I do it every 7-8K miles. then rotate the tires and inspect the brakes.
all brakes tires look the same ..
use the new oil spec SN PLUS ..... this oil stops engine ticking on a cold start ...
inspect for any frame weld rusting .. use cold galv paint ..

Your decision. Purchased my 2016 4RTP and took it to the dealership two times for the free oil changes. Third time they over tighten plastic oil filter cartridge which caused it to crack, broke two bolts off when replacing skids and never said a dang word about it …All dealership’s are different … Now, I do all maintenance myself!

 

Well, I would suggest a little test.
Get oil changed at dealer then check how far from the dot on the dipstick it is?
Get oil change it yourself check where the level is on dipstick.
My local dealer was filling too full. The smaller the engine the more it affects it.

 

Get your oil changes done at 10k intervals up till 20k miles, then never go again. The 5k services are useless, you just waste your time.

 

I went in for the 5K and 10K. After the 10K, there were some scratches on the driver's side. I couldn't be 100% sure it was from them, so I have to live with it.

They do rotate the tires at 5K, so there's some benefit. I rotate mine every 5K when I change my oil. I only do the 5K oil changes because Toyota considers off-roading "extreme conditions."

I take mine to my tire shop, have more confidence in them then some of the people at the dealer.

 

I got the oil changed in my Tacoma at a non-Toyota facility numerous times when it was still under warranty; Had no affect on the warranty.

The Toyota dealer specifically told me back in 2011 or so, when I asked the dealer before I took the truck someplace other than the dealer for an oil change, it would not affect the warranty. My truck was still warranty at this time, and one thing I was told was that I should not go past the 5,000-mile interval if I switched to full synthetic, because if something went wrong with the engine because the warranty could be voided if they determined it was from going past 5,000 miles between oil changes.

Back in 2009 when my parents first bought me the truck (I was 20 years and they bought it for me as my first vehicle), it had to go into the dealer for something with the brake/shift interlock. In 2011, the factory stereo CD player was replaced under warranty because it would turn on and off at random. In 2011 or 2012, the HVAC blower motor was replaced under warranty because it was making noise. Also in 2011 or 2012, the auxiliary input for the iPod/MP3 player was replaced under warranty because my iPod wouldn't connect properly; I now have a custom stereo with a touch-screen head unit, subwoofer, and external amplifier so getting the OEM radio replaced under warranty was rather pointless...

Toyota also replaced my frame under warranty in November 2021!

$1 billion class action lawsuit against Toyota; I'm surprised you don't know about it! Frame perforation has been an issue with Tacomas since their debut in 1995, and unfortunately many 1995-2000 Tacos were bought back by Toyota and crushed. 2001-2004 and 2005-2011 actually got the frame replaced. My truck had a small hole rotted in the frame on the right side by the catalytic converter. The truck was almost 12 years old and had about 140K miles at the time, and was worth maybe $12K; Toyota replaced the frame, brake lines, fuel lines, leaf springs, and lower control arms at a cost way higher than the actual cash value of the truck.

 

Also, I meant to say recall. My truck's bumper-to-bumper warranty ended in September 2012 and the powertrain warranty ended in September 2014, so this was a recall.
