    People have been bashing into other vehicles since 1904 and the Ford Model T. Since the 1970's when plastic bumpers became the norm.....it made it harder to repair. Growing up I remember my dads cars all had metal chrome bumpers. You just had to buff out the scratches.
    bumpers were made for bumping into things in those days

    On the other hand, a lot more people started surviving wrecks, and once-ubiquitous whiplash collars are now far less common.
