Advice on rotors and pads

Hey all,
Simple question here, oem rotors and pads or aftermarket? If anyone has suggestions or advice lmk pls and link rotors and pads I can purchase. Much appreciated

Any heavy duty stuff available for 4 runner? I have OEM and my rotors are warped. A bit my fault as I do break on the heavy side would be nice if there is something that could last longer than OEM. The OEM's are at about 37K miles.

 

If you go through water, slotted rotors (either StopTech or Raybestos R300) are better at evacuating the friction surface.

For pads go OEM or Advics (OEM supplier).

 

I also vote OEM.

 

Rotors don't really warp. The vibration is from the pad material sticking to the rotor.

 

They absolutely warp.
If this was the case people would be replacing pads only.

And then why resurface? Just keep changing pads and running the rotors down til they are too thin.

 

I have an noticeable, audible squeaking noise as my 4R drives, it goes away when I slightly depress the brake pedal. Could the pistons be sticking? 67k on my 4R and I'm thinking of doing pads and rotors.

 

I have not used them before but I have heard great things about Frozen.

How did you reach that conclusion? If the pad material is deposited on the rotor, replacing pads only won't help. The rotor needs to be resurfaced or replaced to get rid of the deposits.

@sympley76 get slotted rotors to scrape away and prevent deposits, switch from factory OEM semi-metallic to OEM ceramic pad compound. The Advics aftermarket pads are also ceramic. You should also adjust your driving habits, for example shift to neutral and engage the parking brake at long red lights, so the pads don't heat soak on the rotors.

 

I noticed my brakes doing that this past week. I'm only at 57k miles. I'm going to inspect them this weekend and go from there. Probably just the pads.

I actually have never resurfaced rotors. Most OEM rotors will undergo 2-3 pad changes before reaching the minimum recommended thickness. Because rotors are fairly inexpensive, I'll change them out on every other pad change. If you bed in the new pads and heat cycle properly, you'll never have an issue unless you ride the brake pedal all of the time.

 

Never said they can't be resurfaced or reused.

But I use Napa. Toyota OEM pads have never lasted for me. From the 4R, Highlander and Tundra all we shot under 50k.

 

Let me know what you find out. It's been too hot here for me to jack up my rig, take off the wheel and take a look at the pads. I need to go borrow my buddies impact as well.

1K for 4 rotors and pads. Change to Canadian add duties and shipipng looking at around CND$1.6K. Definitely on a higher end that I would want to spend but if they do last might be worth it.

 

I'm running Powerstop solid rotors on the front with Raybestos 3E pads, and I really like this combo.

They stop great, nice pedal feel, low dust, and dead quiet. I was impressed with the quality of the pads, they had nice anti-squeak pads on them.

Akebono pads and O'Reilly's rotors on the back. One of the pad shims was a little loose when I installed, and the corrosion resistance of the rotors is not great. I went with them bc they were in stock and I was in a pinch. No complaints about performance, can't go wrong with Akebono pads.

 

I went with Stoptech slotted rotors and NRS Premium pads (Made in Canada. Hybrid material w/ galvanized backs) and have been extremely happy with the performance. Low dust, too. Not the cheapest way to go, but worth it.

You may want Powerstop Z36 kit. I have on mine and I love it. I have locked into a slide about 5 times and I haven't warped anything. Some really like brake feel of carbon ceramic pads. No fade and you can feel through the pedal how much pressure you are applying. I got pads and rotors. Keep your factory calipers. Don't trade for Chinese. There is a Z32 kit also if it don't two or haul a lot. I just go for maximum kit. Can you really have to much brake? You have to be careful hitting them quickly they will throw you through the windshield. EBC makes good looking stuff too. I just know these from experience. They have actually save me several times. I got mine from Amazon for under $500 at the time
