How Screwed am I on Getting this Color Matched Properly?

Backed into another car today like an idiot. Cracked the bumper and heavily dented the lift gate (a simple dent repair won't fix it). So I'm thinking a new bumper and lift gate are going to be needed. Bought this color specifically because of how much I liked it now dreading the possibility of it looking off with the repaint. How screwed am I? Any suggestions/tips on what to look for in a shop or on the paint being used?

A competent body shop shouldn't have any issues. I would look for an independent shop, not one of the larger chains- they are still out there.

Some... not all have 'computer-aided' paint matching, this would be where the paint is mixed and sold. The vin# may contain info for paint, I'm not exactly sure how it all works, but a friend of mine with a body shop told me about the computer matching aspect of it. You should be fine though, as long as you find a body shop with a good track record. Ask to see some pictures of their work in the past, if they are any good they will have pictures.

should not be an issue at all for any competent shop. like Deaux said above, I'd find a good local guy rather than a chain.

If you have State Farm insurance, use an approved State Farm body shop. They will use all oem parts for repair and guarantee the repair..been in your situation

It's fairly new paint and non metallic, so probably fairly easy for a competent shop.

One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 34 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 32yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
+1 on the non metallic paint, should be easy.

If you are still concerned about color matching, look in your area specifically for a automotive paint supply store. Pay them a visit and if you see many pictures of custom painted street rods, you are in the right place. Close to me there is one of those stores - San Leandro color. They have people on staff that are experts in color matching and can even do it by hand. One of our helicopters that was 14 years old needed some paint work done after a window change. The hand match done by an expert was able to perfectly match sun bleached paint. There are people with these skills around.

In your case the paint is at most two years old. It shouldn't be a problem.

Nothing to stress about, This can be matched no problemo.

Worry more about the insurance company.

2 things working for you. solid color and paint age. shouldn’t be much fade if any to compensate for when mixing paint. should be good as new once you get it fixed.

I wouldn't get my insurance company involved in this if you held a gun to my head.

I bet you won't need a new rear door. Find an independent shop with a good reputation and see if they will work out a cash deal. Talk to the owner. Cash deal. No VIN recorded. No record. Like it never happened.

Very few shops mix paint these days. Most just order from a Local distributor, who will fill the order by paint code and quantity.

Unless you have some 1-year severe paint fade, the paint match will be easy. The hatch may be able to be repaired using a PDR service. Someone is secretly telling you to buy a steel rear bumper.

Had some road debris damage repaired at a chain that bought a local shop on a prior vehicle. Went through insurance.

Didn’t show up on the Carfax at all - and I know this because I saw the carfax the dealer pulled when I traded it in.

Every time there is a thread like this, its filled with replies from people who don't know anything about the repair industry.

Get some estimates from reputable body shops. If it's too much, claim through insurance.
A reputable shop will have the colors and equipment to mix the color themselves.
If the shop orders paint everytime they work on a car, I would avoid that shop. They might not even have a paint booth.
Color match depends on the paint system, manufacturer variations and the painter.
Doesn't matter if it's metallic or not. May need to blend into the quarters.

Your insurance company may have a list of reputable repair shops if you dont know any.
Insurance certified shops will have all necessary equipment to properly fix your car.

That gate, bumper and valance will need to be changed at the very least.

    "Pretty sure"
Ask him how old he is and how many vehicles he's damaged.

@bassist I'm 33 and this is the first accident I have been in, so this is not typical at all! Wife and kids were in the car causing distractions that contributed to this incident in addition to me just not checking what I should have been while backing up (obviously).

Appreciate everyone's responses. I feel more comfortable that this can get taken care of by a reputable shop and have made an appointment with an independent high quality one after quite a bit of research. Appears they know what they're doing given the cars they get in there and various reviews and forum posts I've seen. They also mix their own paint. Can't get in until 11/20 but I'll take that as a good thing I guess. My local Toyota dealer (and the insurance company) pointed me to Caliber Collision which looks like a large chain and concerned me on quality of their work.

I’ve used Caliber after they acquired a local shop, and they did a great job. Had a friend who is an adjuster tell me I had nothing to be concerned about, and he was right.

Don’t forget that your dealer probably sends out brand new cars to the Caliber location they referred you to, and the buyers are none the wiser.

Also, this is why I tell my son to be quiet when I get to low speed maneuvers. My wife is great about not distracting me, but my son usually decides that’s the best time to start asking questions.

    Work in progress.
I did the same thing. Backing into a pilar in an underground parking lot. I have a 2021 MGM. Had to replaced the hatch, bumper and all other kind of things. The total cost was $5,200 with StateFarm. I went all OEM. (Sigh)
    Good luck!
