Does it make sense for me to trade in my non-KDSS 2023 4runner TRD OFP for a KDSS equipped TRD OFP?

Basically I bought my 4runner a month ago and it rides "okay" but I test drove the KDSS today after reading about it so much on this forum and it rides "better"

The one I have is white with TRD wheels and 700 on the odometer and the dealer has a silver KDSS equipped 4runner with 2.25" Bilstein 5100 lift with 33" tires basically ready to go (brand new as well). When I test drove it - it rode firm (I'm assuming that's the Bilstein 5100) and on cornering, turning, it was basically flat like people explained here (that's probably the KDSS, right?).

The dealer has asked for $7200 basically out of pocket from me for the trade in (trade in my 4runner for this KDSS equipped 4runner). I'm doing the math to try to make it make sense so I'm paying for the suspension and lift ($4000 value) and KDSS ($1750 value) and basically ~$4000 out of pocket for the mistake of buying non-KDSS.

What do you guys think? I feel it's worth it.

If you like it, and it makes you happy, and you can afford it, why not? Ya only live once.... I'd say do it.

The lift is not $4,000, Bilstein 5100 shocks can be had for about 500 bucks. 33" tires could be anywhere from 1,000 to 1500 bucks, depending on which ones they are.

Sounds like the dealer is just putting a huge markup on a basic aftermarket mod. If you like it, you like it, and if the money is not that big of a deal for you, go for it.

Personally I would look for one that was 100% stock, unless those are the mods that you would make.

Have you driven a stock one with KDSS? The big difference may be just from the Bilsteins which you could add much cheaper to your own. Or, you could add a pretty high-end suspension for less than that. $7,000.

Adding a good suspension lift will tighten body roll up on its own. Once my vehicle is paid off I’ll be adding a Icon lift on her.

    Lots…
Just add a great suspension to your current truck and you’ll love it! Forget the 7500 from the dealer.

If I were you I’d keep the non kdss, this is coming from someone with kdss. I’d spend the money on suspension on current one you have. KDSS is nice but does limit and complicate suspension upgrades depending on how extreme you’d like to go. If you were already considering 7500 there are plenty of suspension options under that and also can be better performing than the bilsteins.

If you get the ORP with KDSS are you just going to abandon your “nokdss” account?

Only speaking for myself, I wouldn’t trade one new vehicle for another for the sake of one extra feature unless I could do it for cheap or free. It’s just too self indulgent.

You have presented your choices as “keep the one you’ve got” or “KDSS with Bilsteins for a ridiculous mark-up.” Maybe investigate a third choice; what kind of deal you can get on an ORP with KDSS but without the Bilsteins.

You could get Kings on yours for that kind of money. @AccuTune Offroad might be able to offer some advice on that.
Would a King suspension KDSS vs non KDSS make a difference? I know they sell Kings for both type but I need to look at the difference again. That said, maybe another brand would be more beneficial at a lower price point.

Nope I would do the opposite in fact I did I traded in my kdss for non kdss my reasoning is I took my brand new kdss one to Moab after I got home I’m extremely ocd so I cleaned my undercarriage and removed the kdss skid, the accumulator was caked in mud (didn’t go mudding I avoid any mud) and the thin wires connecting the accumulator had no insulation except a very thin jacket, I was like I’m probably one percent of people who own a kdss that actually ever took off the kdss skid plate

kdss failure is psuedo common and you can’t just rip it off when it fails or if you no longer want it, it does drive a little better on twisty roads but doesn’t work going more than 10mph off road

just another point of failure so rather not have it all all plus the front sway bar hangs down super low

with respect and not at you personally but it’s a huge pet peeve when people give financial advice on a car forum when it’s not warranted. If op isn’t asking his finances are not our business it’s like giving unsolicited parenting advice, I’m here to talk about 4Runners not have someone tell me how to live my life or manage my money or raise my kids, again not directed at you or anyone in particular but just in general

if you really want to talk about fiancés no one should have a 4Runner we should all be driving a 30 year old piece of shit Honda like warren buffet that’s probably why we are not millionaires like him because we foolishly squander money on a 4Runner

OP asked if it makes sense. My response was to his question. No it does not from a financial stand point. It’s a huge pet peeve of mine when people don’t look at was asked and try to answer like you did but it’s a free country and you can do what you want.

Yes he did. Here is a quote from his post “I'm doing the math to try to make it make sense”.

The math does not make sense. This is why I answered the way I did.

Anything else you need help with on understanding the OPs question?
