Aren't ALL the intakes "cold-air" intakes? My SR5 sucks air out of the fender. How much colder can you get?

2014 Neglected by the previous owners 2020 is an abused former rental... 2023 New I've been buying above my pay grade ☹️
With my first 4Runner, the neglected one, I took a can of hammered aluminum spray paint to the engine compartment and to the skid plates as well.

The vanity cover (cracked) and air box (gashes) got the paint. I did super glue repairs, using a leather texture repair piece to retexture the airbox, a butt joint repaired the crack in the engine cover.

It was great hood lingerie. It looked good opening it up. It was a step in pride of ownership. Just like my under seat lighting.

I remember a famous woman in the 50s or 60s once saying something about her silk panties, something to the extent of "you can't see them, but I know they're there." (Monroe, Mansfield, Dors...)

A similar analogy could be no panty lines, you can't see the TRD air box, but you can hear it.

I actually see higher than ambient temps with my TRD intake but I didn’t monitor it with the OEM intake.

This is awesome information for reference in regards to intake air temperature versus ambient.

The answer to this question boils down to one thing: opportunity cost.

What else could you be doing with that money? If we isolate it to mods, is there a mod that produces a higher marginal utility (to use an economics term)? If so, then the intake isn’t worth it - you need to put that money towards the mods with higher marginal utility.

Just finished the install. It’s overpriced at the current post-Covid pricing (almost $500 shipped). It does make the engine sound cooler and adds a smidge of throttle response. The novelty of both may wear off over time, but paired with a magna flow exhaust (next project) it maximizes the 4Rs potential without a supercharger and the sound will satisfy over the time. The improvement is small but noticeable, install itself was very straightforward.

For the price of a TRD intake, you could get more or less the same thing from another brand, and with the money you'd save, could get more stuff like underhood lighting, interior LED light kit, oil catch can, maybe even replace the big OEM muffler with something lighter weight that gives a little better sound and performance, etc...

If you ran it on a dyno before and after you would be disappointed after realizing it made no usable difference. I can tell you first hand, the cold air intake and any exhaust have nothing in common with a supercharger.

The loss of acceleration you experience going one tire size bigger is much greater than the minuscule hp gain you MIGHT get with exhaust and air intake. Honestly, the only appreciable motivation for those mods is to increase intake and exhaust sound.

Don't forget, putting on the TRD stickers is good for a few more hp as well :burnrubber:!

I've attempted to obtain the CARB sticker directly through the Toyota materials distribution center and this is the response I got:

Unfortunately, we no longer carry the TRD carb labels here @ the MDC. Also, we are strictly dealer support, please visit your local dealer and have them order the carb label for you through our Parts Distribution Center.

So if I'm looking at these highlighted numbers correctly, and just looking at peak differences, looks like there is a gain of 5 hp and 20 ft-lbs of torque? Whether those gains are worth the cost of a TRD intake is up to the potential buyer. But if one could realize similar gains with less expensive intakes, I'd say it's worth it, considering some of the other doo-dads folks put on their 4Rs that cost the same or more.

Go read through this whole thread. There are posts with every part number and you can piece it together that way. I did, and it and it installed just fine on my 23. I did get the extra cable from Michigan Motor Sports to avoid separating wires. Shop around for different dealers who sell on the net. Some give free shipping with a $200 dollar amount purchase.

its not needed, its just if you dont want to cut the wire loom on the oem as it is necessary to separate some of the wires that go to a different location on the trd one. It's really easy but some people prefer not to go this route in case they accidentally cut a wire while slicing the loom so the aftermarket connector is a plug and play extension so you dont have to cut anything (from what i understand)

Exactly. Simply saves altering the oem wire harness.

I see - in that case, the mere fact that it is necessary to modify the wire harness makes it clear that this kit is not for our 4runners, I was interested, but hard pass I guess.
