I just bought this 3rd gen and although I read up on them I didn't see anything about the axles leaking until I got her home, then seen it myself. I could've negotiated down from the asking price, the lady may still give me a slight refund, I'll see!

where do I get these parts from, the local dealer wants 360.00, I'm wondering if I can beat that by a margin making it worthwhile to order online? IMG_2198.jpg71432842334__FEABAB62-2C0C-49D7-8AE9-6B146E3733A0.jpg

What parts do you need? I get mine online from McGeorge Toyota. I only use Toyota parts. They last decades and are the cheapest per mile.

This thing is a money pit. Alternator battery, belts, two bat terminals, fuel filter. doing one axle now, radiator, hoses and water pump timing chain or belt to do. Also bought two hood cylinder's to install. Needs two cylinder's for rear door, there weak. The fender flares will have to be addressed and the non functional moon roof. Ha ha. And I thought I got it for a good price at 4,000.

No rust at all, the interior, the brakes the tires are really in nice shape. Except for the gear oil on the one set of brakes. It's a Two wheel drive and not a limited like I thought it was, it's a sport edition.

Timing belt on this one. It's what drives the water pump as well. Pretty easy install. Plugs were every 60K on those rigs. Might wanna check those too. Be certain to use the Denso platinum plugs. Those older Toyota engines rarely played well with aftermarket plugs. Moon roof is gonna suck! LOL. Hopefully the frame is solid. That's a big concern up where I'm at in the NE US.

3G4R is far from a money pit

Everything you've mentioned is just due to old age sans the battery terminals

None. Bone Stock. EXCEPT: Brushguard, tow hitch, both welded to the frame. It's good to have friends and a fully equipped garage!
Get what's called Marine Terminal battery terminals. They're good, heavy, lead, and they have a screw post. Easy to put wires on, especially if you crimp a ring terminal on the wires, with some meltwall heatshrink to protect them. Easy to pull off and clean the battery posts, and the terminals too. Last forever. Good stuff.

Once those axle seals start to leak, you gotta replace them. Maybe, probably even, the brake shoes. Something to check as to the cause of the leak, other than just age, is the breather on the differentials, both front AND rear. They get clogged, and it's a sure bet your axle seals will start leaking. They're actually easy to remove and clean, should it be necessary. Just a thought.

    Good luck!
    Pat☺

The frame is excellent on this as any other vehicle down here. I've been researching the maintenance items on these and have a list and I'll punch them out. I purchased this from the wife of an expired friend, he'd battled cancer for 3 years and the 4R hasn't moved Since Covid. Id would've thought he'd maintained it more than he did but he was sick and rode in his wife's car. Everything he owned was immaculate. Bruce did his homework before he bought anything so I can tell you if he owned one, they're good vehicles. As you all know.

He'd bought it in 05 with 68,000 miles on it for 15,000 and another 1,800 for an extended warranty, I have the receipt. The warranty was never used so that was a waste of money. He also only let the dealer work on, I have those receipts too. He would've repaired the axle had he not been sick. Im gonna need a tool to do the axle, I hate to buy one is there another option? I do have a HF 20 ton press.

There is a date on the timing cover 104,000 miles 2009. He hadn't any children, no riders other than himself, I'm amazed at the condition of this thing. All the glass is good, the rear seats and passenger seats were never sat in from what I can tell. Driver seat has only a slight mark from sliding in and out.

Welcome from Wisconsin! Did you try Rock Auto for parts? They saved me lots of money on parts for my old 2005 TrailBlazer.

Thanks for the suggestions fellows. I'm starting to think an awd is the only way to go on these, I'm pretty sure up north on an icy road you'd better have one. You'd get stuck in wet grass in this. I'm researching the forum constantly.

I've completed the one side. The other isn't leaking yet. Not broke don't fix?

If one was leaking...I would imagine the other one is not far behind.

I always find once I do one side the other side is done in a fraction of the time.

I agree it's needs to be done soon. I took off the other side to inspect the brakes and look for any dif fluid leakage, none noted and the brakes are in new condition, looked under truck last night and it's covered in brake fluid on the other side. I didn't do anything there. This is before

Those are good looking brakes and have hardly any miles on them and the wheel cylinder is done just sitting over night?
I had put maybe 5 miles on it. I wonder when I adjusted them and bled them I destroyed the wheel cylinder? Idk how.

The PO had any work done at dealer on this truck. Well let me tell you they didn't do anything. Everything listed here as general maintenance, I haven't seen anything done and the PO would've had them replace anything they found. The oil leaks on this vehicle make it non drivable, the lbj's I can almost bet are done. The timing belt was done at 104,000. Idk if the water pump has been done.
I have to do all the work. It's a joke how this truck was maintained.
Taken out the sunroof today and changing wheel cylinder.

The truck was only driven 20,000 miles since 2015 according to my calculations

Those brakes wear at the bottom. The bottom appears very worn to me. Honestly, I would replace them.

I did replace them and the wheel cylinder today. Only because I had new shoes and had to take them apart. Compared to the new ones there not worn much, they look worn though.
