Where can one get this protection film? Is it pre-cut vehicle specific or you just cut off a big sheet.

Thanks. I've been searching to see if there a thread for "high interest" points to cover. I am not looking at wrapping the vehicle lol, but just curious which areas are prone to this.. I feel like all 4 door sills should have this done obviously but couldn't find any other info of other places from the more experiences veterans.

I could see doing all four door sills and the back hatch, as those get the most traffic, especially with kids. Mine has my wife and me, so the rear seats have nearly zero use...

I never really thought of doing this, but it actually seems like a smart thing to undertake.

Where exactly on the back hatch are you referring to? You talking the flat portion of the bumper as you get into the trunk? Well stumbled on a list at the below thread.. has a list lol.

I know this is an old post, but I just want to point out what little faith Toyota has in their rust prevention.

My 07 Volvo had a 144month/144k mile corrosion warranty. That's TWELVE YEARS.

My 06 Jetta had 5 years 100K, at 90K started developing rust under the paint on the front fenders and I was blamed for it. WV did not cover, absolute BS as car was spotless and well maintained.

    Sorry, what?

The rust is my biggest concern with this vehicle.

Come from a BMW, 08.. 320km on the thing.. no rust at all on the body. The chassis etc. had typical rust for a rust belt but nothing of concern.

Same. My 233k 07 Volvo has lived in New England it's entire life with zero extra corrosion maintenance and looks terrific underneath and under the hood. Only issue was a mild steel exhaust hanger and heat shield rotted out, but the actual body is mint.

Meanwhile at 6 years old my 4R looked like I kept it parked in a foot of salt water. It looks much better now, after a good amount of elbow grease.

That’s interesting. I wasn’t getting rust on mine, but the paint on the edges of the plastic was wearing down to primer, due to a combination of grit and pressure on the sill plate getting in and out. Rust was a matter of time.

So a while back, I removed the sill cover, cleaned up well, and applied thick clear tape, just like in these pictures. I dont keep it super clean at all times, so I expect to have to replace the tape after a while.

Did you find tape specific to that spot, or cut your own from a larger sheet?

I had some clear gorilla tape laying around that I used. I’m sure there's better stuff for the situation, but good enough since I’ll replace as needed.

I just ordered this. 3M Scotchgard Clear Paint Protection Bulk Film 2" Wide Roll (2" x 60") https://a.co/d/13iUMJK

I am still not quite sure what people are covering in the trunk area what is of actual concern.

One source of peace of mind is that if in 2023, your 2016 truck hasn’t shown paint scratch due to plastic or whatever body rust, then it’s probably a well-painted specimen. One Youtibe guy reported that the rear hatch Garnish (the plastic 4Runner emblem piece) also tends ro dig into the paint. At the two little corners. But this is again not the norm. I’ve carefully studied used cars on dealers lot and have never seen it, yet one guy’s megneric gray got it after just 9 months. The YouTube guys truck is also gray, maybe it’s the gray?

Amazon sells a lot of 3M films, or you can buy the Xpel brand tarts comes in a more properly packaged roll. But you’ll need to cut it roughly to the dimension, then use a hair drier to flatten any folds. Pretty simple actually. Another unorthodox method which I think can work is to buy the Diamond Clear brand of automotive paint and clearcoat. Buy the little cans, then literally paint on the sensitive areas. It’s a very glossy, tough clearcoat and you almost won’t be able to tell it’s layered over factory clearcoat. I think it’s tough enough to withstand plastic rubbing or most salt. I sometimes fantasize that when I no longer care about the appearance of my truck, I’ll just spray the shttt out of the body with this clearcoat…

They did a great job with the repair, but quite unfortunate that this happened in the first place. I know what I'll be checking tomorrow morning...

It’s still uncertain how it happened. I saw the question/theory of foot stepping on it while egressing, but I paid attention to how I get in and out the truck and realized my foot never even go there. My left foot swings pass that part and land on the side step, I support my balance with my left elbow on the B pillar (or simply balance on my left leg), and then hop off. No foot Eve touch the plastic trim piece nor the sill. I only occasionally kick the speaker grill but that’s it.
