How wide can stock 4Runner go with tires?

Right now I am 265/70/R17 which is 10.5 inches wide I believe. I don't want a lift. I may consider new wheels if they help me get wider tires. Help!

Prolly 275's are safe, guys say 285's with no lift or mods start to rub depending on rim width, backspace and offset. Which OEM wheels do you have?

I have 275's and probably would fit 285's but it would be very tight, possibly running on the liner a bit.

 

I have TRD Offroad Premium OEM wheels and 265/70/R17 KO2s. Discount Tire is willing to take the tires back and give me wider ones. Are you folks sure 285s will not rub at full flex?

No one can be absolutely sure. It seems to vary by vehicle. Even the same model.

 

Nice, ORP wheels are very sought after high quality 7.5" wide japanese wheels. I had the same wheels and sold them in two seconds on FB marketplace when upgrading to 9" wide. I didn't really know what I had at the time lol some ppl think they're a tad ugly, compared to everything on the market at least. I think most people won't guarantee you much, but will advise that you will have minor rubbing most likely

 

I fear a slight rub will open the pandora box, and the long dead mods' bug inside me will come alive and then you know what happens next, this nice truck will be turned into a modded nightmare, something that I am fighting with myself to not let happen.

 

I mean my truck is a modded dream haha
But look the only mod you'll HAVE to do, if you want wider tires as you say you do, is a minor inner front fender body trim in front of front wheels, perhaps push fender liner up/in a hair (easy), and once in a while removal of front mud guards.be prepared for these minor mods and that'll be it, reality of a 4R unfortunately, or stay stock width my man

 

Discount Tire says go 265/65/285 if you don't want any problems. But I have two tire choices for that particular size, Yokahama Geolander and Cooper Discoverer. How good are they compared to KO2s?
I asked for Grabbers and Duratracs but they don't make them in that size?

I had a 3/2 lift with 285’s. No rubbing issues and I got to keep the mud flaps, stock UCA’s and no BMC.

Everyone’s experience is all over the map so I wouldn’t base your decision on any one person’s experience.

Looks only or actual performance? It’s ok to say you want something rugged looking knowing that you are never going off-road. There are lots of 4Runners and Jeeps like that.

Rugged trek is the most aggressive in the Discover family as they are considered a hybrid / rugged terrain tire. The only other “more off-road” in that family line would be their mud terrain.

So it is this 285/65/R17. Cooper Discoverer comes with this.

 

Call them back and ask them for the full name on the tires they are talking to you about. Cooper is the brand and discoverer is the family. There will be a specific model i.e. DISCOVERER ATP II, DISCOVERER ST MAXX, DISCOVERER AT3 4S, DISCOVERER AT3 LT, DISCOVERER RUGGED TREK

Then you can look up what the real size is per the manufacture.

 

Narrow and taller will generally yield better results off-road unless you're running on sand dunes.

 

He says I can take my chances with this KO2. It will also be an inch higher, so 33s basically. This will probably mess up the speedometer and sensors, and will rub. Who is here with these exact tires on a stock TRD Offroad?

 

I saw the Coopers they are talking about. They are no match to KO2s. I don't want them now

 

So I don't have those, but let me give you one piece of advice: you need to run an online tire pressure calculator when switching to LT tires. If you run the stock door pressure, they will be really under inflated and you'll possibly get vibrations.

 

The customer service of these guys is second to none. And you can't beat their prices either. They are willing to put these bigger ko2s on to test things out before I buy them.
