Serpentine Belt Replacement - As Easy As This Looks?

Hey, guys and gals. Anyone out there who has replaced the serpentine belt on a Gen5? Is it as easy as this 1-minute video makes it look? Thanks!

 

I haven't had to change it on a 4Runner, but have changed plenty on other vehicles. Probably one of the easiest maintenance items to complete. Just pay attention to the way it came off and you will be good!

 

Thanks, yeah, I've replaced many myself. Just not on this vehicle. Was just wondering if there's a gotcha or two, as sometimes happens with 'simple' jobs LOL. This one has over 115k on it, so just being proactive.

 

Looks like the removal of the cover is the hardest part of it all and that is not that difficult.

By the way does anyone have the correct updated Toyota part number for the belt? For some reason I keep having issues when I look on Toyota's parts website.

 

90916-A2015 (replaces 99367-H2150). Got this info from Olathe Toyota parts site. Not near me, but one of the easier-to-use sites IMO.

 

This reminds me I should probably do mine, it's 10 years old/160k miles on possibly the original belt.

Anyone replace pulleys as well? I'm seeing belt kits with pulleys in my search results. Belt itself looks to be about 50 bucks for OE Toyota. M George and Longo popped up in my results, anyone use either of them?

 

Thinking back to my first Toyota in 1982, through today, maybe a dozen Toyotas, and I honestly believe that I haven't experienced a pulley failure, ever. Not that it couldn't happen, but not for me in about 1.5 million combined miles. Impressive, once I think about it.

 

Vikings Garage on You-Tube has a pretty good video on serp belt and pulleys. Driving through a lot of mud will make those pulleys go out sooner. Had to change them when I had my FJ at 150K.

 

Belt replacement is easy. Just have some patience fishing it between the fan and fan shroud.

Lower idler pulley replacement is a bit tougher due to crowding from the oil cooler.

 

I assume the routing is the same as the 4th gen? If so, I can post up a diagram showing the routing. If not, could someone post up the same for the 5th gen?

 

I’m sure I can get the routing correct if I take a few pics first. Was just wondering if there might be any surprises. I’m not worried though.

4.0 liter 4th gen and 5th gen. 4runner. V8 4.7 liter 4runner is different.

Guppy - that shows as 2010 through 2016. Certainly 5th gen, but does that apply to the newer 5th gen engine?

 

Yes it was just an older copy. Good for all 4.0 5th gens.
