Rough Country 4.5in Lift

Just saw this trolling youtube. Is this a new lift? The video was just posted. I know people will trash it's off-road worthiness, but it's still nice to have some actual diff-drop lifts for the 4runner. Not many around. For some reason it only shows compatibility with 15-20.

Junk Country. Also drop bracket lifts reduce ground clearance.

 

Just depends. Lifts that drop the crossmember are designed (usually) to keep the CVs at a factory angle, which means you can easily run up to 7.5in of lift in the front. The back gets tricky on the 4runner though because of the linked suspension. This kit would make running 35s pretty easy. Looks like they have a 6in kit though now as well, so no real need to get the 4.5 if you want to run 35s. Kinda just looks like the same lift with an extra 2in in the font though.

Well, sometimes. I mean 4.5" drop bracket lift, still running 285's, yeah, probably reduced ground clearance compared to a smaller lift and running 285's. 4.5" drop bracket lift running 35's, possibly not losing ground clearance but maybe not better than a smaller (non-drop bracket) lift and 285's. but you still gain approach, departure and breakover so...

 

If RC is only making bracket lifts now for the 4R they are to late.

Huge (worthless) bracket lifts are common here and have been around forever.

 

6" if anyone going bracket lift. These seem very uncommon now compared to years ago. At least I don't see many people with them.

Barely and you have the risk of a weak aftermarket crossover and the major possibility that you cannot revert to stock.

 

Are these typically geared towards people wanting to get max lift clearing big tires not really using off road? Kind of like body lift I never see anyone mentioning now.

 

Cant easily revert. Pretty common on the Tacoma side of the fence to keep the cut piece of crossmember to weld back in if needed.

 

Mostly for the looks/light off-road (mud). Pretty common around me. My neighbor has a Chevy 2500 on 38-40s. Showroom clean.

 

Most don’t though because they’re in a hurry to lift and rush to the next overland meet so they can open up the RTT brah in a parking lot.

 

I guess it depends on the end game. I think the higher CG would be one of several problems.

Yep I have been twice and know the Hawaiian style. Per capita I think Hawaii must have more tacos and 4r anywhere.

Just taste but the smaller tires with big lifts is not my style but to each their own. I do like checking them out.

On an island it's a different use case. Not alot of interstate driving I think.

 

Bulletproof offers 10-12” lifts.

 

Ya I checked that out when saw it. I think they may have gone out of business. At least saw lots of bad reviews.

 

the amount of interstate driving vs. trail vs. off road depends on which island you're on.

but you are right - you can't go anywhere without running into a Toyota no matter what island you're on.

 

So “just-for-men” kept talking about preserving geometry on CVs , spindles, steering etc. Which is nice I guess, but he didn’t mention the front and rear driveshaft angles. I’ve seen at least a couple of posts of bracket lifts owners who have had loud noise from what sounded like pinion bearings, maybe even TC output shaft bearings.

The runner they showed looked more decent than the 6plus lifts. Something I’d only try on a clapped out 4runner that doesn’t do off road.

 

I don’t get it. Can someone explain to me the thought process of trying to reach for the stars with a nice and expensive SUV?

 

I think it's just for looks and in the eye of beholder. Kind of like the Carolina squat. I don't get it but everyone is different.

Making your ride quality worse is what confuses me.

 

I'll get a lift if and when I can't get someplace that I really want to go and a lift would have made the difference. I'll have a better idea in a couple months how likely that is.

 

This site has taught me over the last few years that there are sooooooo many different approaches to a vehicle and interests. Personally I get confused at some of the choices but I’m sure I cause the same to others who wonder “why would he cut into his vehicle” or “why is that his DD” or “why silver”. Heck, my buddy only leases vehicles. Blows My Mind!!!

 

I like how lifted 4runners look, and the 4.5in height with proper wheels
/tires looks good to my eye. But personally it’s not worth the cost due to mechanical/structural risks.

That said, Hawaii has been mentioned. Normal is local. When everybody around is sky high, a 4.5in bracket lift could be considered mild and reasonable.


At least that’s my excuse. I never thought I’d mod anything, ever, but start hanging out with the “wrong” group of guys, start having fun using the 4runner off-road, and next thing you know you have new suspension, oversized tires, MRAP armor, and you’re sleeping in your car down by the river.
