I am having trouble with my navigation system. When I’m on it, it doesn’t give me a precise location of where I’m at or going. I thought it was lagging at first until I noticed it does the same when I plug my phone to use waze, google maps, or apple maps. It’ll work for a minute then goes off. I was coming home from seaside last night and navigation was pinned out in Olympic, WA. There’s also a a cross over “gps” on the bottom left corner.

Is there anything I can do to get the accuracy of the location? Thanks!

It’s odd that it does it both with the on board nav and the phone navigation apps.

Yeah! I’ve been trying to figure it out. My phone’s all updated and everything. It started happening since July but as of now it’s been doing it everytime I drive …

This is weird. When using apple Car play I would have assumed it to be pulling gps data from the phone. Apparently not?

Does it do it on your phone when it’s not in car play mode?

@Spare Parts no! when unplugged, the map on my phone works perfectly fine! it’s only when I do plug to apple play or when using my map on the navigation system!

Guess your runner is junk, you got a few choices. 1 just send it to me, I’ll dispose of it properly or just push it off a cliff, the GPS won’t have a clue where it is. The vehicle nav system is crap, I was using the maps today, and it would have me driving between roads.

@mandysom I hate to say it but this sounds like an issue for the dealer to sort out.

But in general - GPS diections of any kind:

CarPlay is using both GPS systems. The one in your car has an issue - fix that, and CarPlay will work.

Maybe the GPS antenna is unplugged or has failed. It's not receiving satellite signal apparently. Without that signal, GPS can't acquire position information. If you're still under 3/36 it should be covered. Odds are there is a resistance test that can be one to test the antenna circuit. Maybe someone with access to the repair manual can pull the value for you, so you can test it if you're no longer under warranty.

    Okay so update!

I do use a radar. I notice when the radar is newe the center, there’s no gps signal but when I move it away it works fine. It’s never happened before until recently. What do you think could be wrong? Everything is all up to date. Looks like the problem is when the radar is near…

Is the radar detector covering the receiver antenna for the GPS? I'll bet it is....or it's interfering with it. Either way, you know your cause now. Put the detector elsewhere on the dash. Maybe in the left corner of the windshield, where you can see/reach it easily if needed.

It shouldn’t though. It’s been the same spot for the longest. I will move it around and see if that will do anything. Thanks for your help! I appreciate it!

Interestingly, I just came across another post with someone experiencing a very similar issue! Gotta be some sort of interference.

I saw that one! I’m just curious why it started to interfere now and not before. I’ll be testing it out for the next few days with the radar! if thats the case then I know what I’ll have to do. Thanks again!!

Interference could depend a lot on the position and orientation of the detector and the strength of individual GPS satellite signals. There's likely to be a threshold effect where it would function perfectly well even with interference, right up to the point where it doesn't work at all.

Sounds like the radar detector is emitting radio frequency energy that's overloading or interfering with the GPS receiver. The radar unit may be getting ready to fail.

Aside from relocating it, you can try (temporarily) powering it from an external battery and/or putting some snap on ferrite chokes on the radar's power cable to see if that helps. Additionally, maybe try shielding the bottom of the radar unit from the dash with heavy duty foil.

Just get rid of your radar detector. Come to the right side if the law and obey the speed limit. People who use radar detectors are of dubious moral character. A radar detector in your car indicates premeditation. An intention to break the law and confound the attempts of law enforcement to keep the roadways safe for everyone. You should be ashamed, you naughty boy. Take that thing out of your car right now or your keys will be taken away and you can just walk to the school dance this weekend!

First "long" trip I took in my '20 Runner I added a Garman GPS strictly to check the accuracy of speedometer(overreads by 1mph at 70mph). But, on the return trip, I set them both to guide me home. I knew the way, but I want to test them. I came to one intersection, and the Runner's told me to turn left, and the Garmin told me to turn right. The Runner wanted me to get to a numbered "Highway", but the Garmin was directing me to a main road. Just a bit of a difference. Rather amusing at the time, but then I'm easily amused.

Yeah, routing algorithms are tough to assess and compare. I've noticed some have difficulty in perfectly gridded urban environment (e.g. Phoenix), where there are a many similar possible solutions, and they get paralyzed trying to pick the best one. Sometimes I'd rather get a faster answer with a feasible route than to wait forever to save a minute of driving.

EMI seems to be the culprit. Try an electromagnetic shield too. GPS can be calibrated, compasses can be calibrated too

All joking aside - radar detectors are kind of pointless anymore. This isn't 1991. Most stationary speed enforcement is done by LIDAR / laser and your shit ain't alerting until you've already been got. Moving enforcement is almost always 'instant on' where the radar unit is on but the antenna isn't; the officer snaps it on as car approach and then snaps it off again as the speeds register, you'd have to be pretty perfectly placed to be able to be alerted in time to slow down; or it's done by by plane and yo shit will never alert because it's a spotter and a stopwatch timing you from above. On top of that, presence of a radar detector does actually indicate some degree of premeditation to speed and so if I stop a car for speed and there's a detector visible I am absolutely writing that driver because fuck them. All that, and it fucks with your GPS? Lose it!
