Why wouldnt they if someone is dumb enough to pay it. Markets are markets and as long as people are willing to get out over their skis for a vehicle they "have to have", dealers will keep doing it.

I think that's for the tint, mats, and wheel locks. But yea, the whole thing is ridiculous.

People paying this is what is perpetuating this. It's even worse on Stellantis lots. Piles of literal crap with 10k-15k market adjustments still, in late August 2023.

What you have to do is get the dealerships manager/director and take him to the vehicle and point and laugh....than walk OUT

World over Toyota lets it's dealers do such ridiculous markups that are completely obnoxious. Toyota dealers are the worst because they know they have a product that sells and they try to squeeze as much as they can over the price of the car because they can get away with it.
All it takes is a sensible buyer to walk out the door.
But if they manage to fool even 1 potential buyer, it's a win and they will carry on doing it.

They'll eventually get whatever the market will bear. Someone will pay that, or less than that. If they sell it for $74,506, hats off to them, as we all want as much money as we can get.

I would not do business with that dealer, but the responsibility for this phenomena lies with buyers.

Part of the problem here is these dealerships issuing 7-10 year loans where literally any car you buy will deprecate faster than the vast majority are going to pay it off because they can now "afford" a vehicle they can't really afford. It's like the housing bubble all over again, but with auto/personal loans.

2014 Neglected by the previous owners 2020 is an abused former rental... 2023 New I've been buying above my pay grade ☹️
    Dealerships I'll never work with:

    AutoNation
    Livia/DCH
    Penske
    Crown/John Elway
    Mossy
    Lang

They've been doing that crap for years. I even found an odometer discrepancy with a Toyota at their Irvine AN dealership. They did not disclose it but it was very clear on the Toyota service line records. When Wilson Automotive (CA & NV) had an odometer discrepancy on one of their used cars, it was part of the listing.

Ethics are massively different. The big chains also reward successful sales managers, so they will fudge information to move more units so that they get a promotion in the corporate world.

Someone will come in and negotiate the markup down to a few thousand and feel like they got the deal of the century. If someone is willing to pay it, then they will mark it up. The dealer will recoup their floor cost even if it sits on the ground for a year. They will just sell the other trim 4Runners to keep their allocation units.

If manufacturers really wanted to combat this behavior, they would strip the dealer of their allocation status and reduce the units by 75%. Dealers would then play the volume game vs the profit game.

I'll use the oldie rims it came with as an negotiate point to get the price down to 54 instead of 74k :)

The best part is floor mats come with the Pro. Just emphasizes the f***ery.

Meh.. it's a free country and if people are willing to pay that, so be it, and it's not like it's predatory lending. There are so many other things wrong in this country that this is trivial, along the same lines as people paying $2-3K for Taylor Swift tickets.

On my 2019, I negotiated out-the-door price with two local dealerships online, then via email. Ended up with identical prices on Nautical Blue, with one having predator steps and the other none. Since I didn't care about predator steps, I took the one that didn't have them, simply because it was 30 miles closer. But I didn't play any games with either one - too tiring. At the end of the day, we're both talking about just a few thousand dollars anyway.

Its simply ridiculous what people will pay for a vehicle just to get from point A to point B.

David’s last video has not helped at all. People are rushing to get TRDs at any price now that the 2024 Model 250 debacle has been made public. Four out of seven dealers in the area I looked were asking $10-15K market adjustments. And the dealers selling at MSRP had a two year waitlist with deposits placed and they were no longer even accepting deposits. They would not take cash! It’s madness. I’m out.

In late spring I saw market adjustments up to $12k on the Pro, though most of them were in the range of $6-7k.

It reminds me of when I bought my previous car in 2009. I had gotten good bids from a couple dealerships, but before closing I wanted to check back with the dealership where I got a great deal my then-current car that and where I had it serviced, but which had subsequently changed hands. I got an old-school salesman who gave me a song and dance about how that car was selling for 2-4k over MSRP and there was no way he'd sell me one for less. I told him I already had two offers on the table for less than MSRP and I was giving him a chance to do better before dealing with them. He said was lying and wouldn't budge. I told him which dealerships they were and said that he had five minutes to change his mind before I left and never came back. He again told me I was lying. A week later he called me at work and asked if I was ready to buy yet. I told him I had bought the car at my price an hour after talking to him, and told him I was insulted that he didn't take me at my word when I had given him details.

I would pay a market price if that's where the market really is. However, it takes a special kind of clown to insist the market price is different than offers on the table.

Yeah AutoNation sucks. When I was hunting for a Pro in 2017 they (called three-no differences) were higher and sleazier than all but one other dealer in FL/GA/AL that I contacted. Best part was they kept calling after I told them to get lost. I’ve driven seven hours to buy. Apparently there are enough suckers who won’t that these practices work.

At least it's still acceptable to negotiate at car dealerships, can't exactly do that for just about every other market (gas, groceries, etc) where the same greedy mark ups have been occuring.

Just like concerts. Everyone complains about the price of tickets and concession, yet they still go into debt over it!
