I don’t believe having those options would’ve help and that point.

I'm guessing there was nothing to attach a winch cable to, otherwise they could have winched right back up onto the trail.

Dunno, he seems legit. Has the "texas overland" sticker.

Hey now. California has 14 peaks at 14,000 and above. Not the 58 peaks CO has, but still quite challenging, fun, and definitely considered alpine. :)

This happened to a family friend/coach a few years ago on black bear. She was the passenger who was ejected. Be careful out there, the mountains are beautiful, but command respect.

IMHO it looks to me like all 4 wheels are on the ground and the driver should have been able to get back up on the main trail (even with out e locker or ATRAC). I don't see any evidence of rear wheel spin so Im guessing the driver just lost his/her nerve given the drop. Ass Clown seems like an appropriate moniker for this driver in this situation.

I dunno, it's easy to Monday morning quarterback these things, but hard to really tell unless one is familiar with the trail. It might be one of those situations where any wheelspin would have him sliding sideways down the bank, and right over the edge.

Matt's off-road recovery has loads of videos like that. Sometimes the bigger thing to do is admit you done f*cked up and call for help. Also, if it WAS able to be driven out of that spot, wouldn't the rescuers have done it?

Very true regarding the Monday morning QB. Not sure if rescuers would have actually driven it out of the spot given potential liability but who knows. As you suggest maybe it was worse than the pictures made it look!

Agree, it looks like this was the point where the driver (appropriately) lost nerve, and finally understood what is meant by “amateur level difficulty-expert level consequences.”

It’s also where any potential passenger looking straight down would begin to make threats to the drivers life if he didn’t stop. :D

And yes, it’s always worse in real life. Pictures are horrible at showing the real angles, space, and scale involved. Heck, even in real life you sometimes have to look at a vehicle from various angles to understand what will happen with the next move.

I do not disagree that what they did was wrong by going down a trail that is marked as closed. However, I am reading most everyone here say they would drive out and those wheels are planted. I wonder if you all even looked at the picture!

We do not have the backstory or anything. Maybe a motorcyclist or someone was going uphill (obviously the white Jeep and recovery truck were faced uphill) and he pulled off a bit too far and went to go again and started slipping.

Also in regards to my prior comment wondering if you are looking at the same picture… I said that because if you were then maybe you would see the picture was taken while in the recovery stage. We don’t know if he was pulled to this point or if they tightened him down and it brought his drivers front wheel back to the ground (look at the green rope in tension).

I recommend being careful of talking down to others and putting them down. We have all done stupid things in our lives. Instead we should be saying thanks that everyone was safe, root him on for getting outdoors instead of watching TV, and help educate the man on how to avoid these situations and learn about trail closures. If there were signs saying the trail was closed and he ignored them, then he should have to pay a fine and the recovery fee. Looks like quite a few people on that trail.

It almost looks like the cover under the hood that can be removed via push pin clips. Maybe they took it off to access the winch better?
