Black Bear Pass 4runner recovery

Anyone have something to admit? I have buddies that have done Black Bear Pass but it's not on my bucket list. Rollover pucker factor off camber on shelf roads.

Black bear pass is closed due to all the rain we got this year. Driving on closed trails especially on trails like Black bear pass make bad news

 

It wasn't a rollover. Just some idiots who got stuck on a closed road. By the way, there are already 2 threads on this.

 

I blame the Jeep stripes, widdle wadder and sticker bomb for trying to wheel a closed trail.

Any idea if they can bill you for recovery efforts the county takes? Never had the need and intend on keeping it that way.

And to be fair, that’s the thing. S&R should be for the folks who have a real accident. Like, they go out on the trail, have years of outdoor experience and a good track record, then have a surprise heart attack, or there’s a freak tree fall or something like that. Sorry, now I’m just ranting. But it gets frustrating to see some Yahoo from coastal California or something who decides they’re suddenly an alpine expert. My Dad was in the FS, and this type of crap has become so common in the last 15 years.

 

JuiaGotta4x4 - can we trade your coastal Californian alpine experts for our tourists with no ocean sense who regularly put themselves and others in danger requiring life guard intervention? We got ‘em in large numbers.

 

Hahaha! That would be a fair trade. I can only promise you that I won’t be relocating to California and trying the ocean. That thing is just way too large.

Couldn't agree more, especially the people who suddenly found the outdoors during COVID but only go for the IG pics and then end up in trouble due to lack of preparation. It's aggravatingt o be crowded out of the areas and activities I used to enjoy by people who hardly have the ability to appreciate anything unless they think other people care that they were there.

 

I couldn't believe the explosion of campers in one of the close state forests when the lockdowns went into effect. I'd been there a couple times before around the same time of year and it was practically empty. Tried taking my family around the beginning of covid lockdown time and...

1. No rangers to sign up with at the station. There is a site sign up sheet that was supposed to be used (even before rangers were locked down too) but apparently nobody used it - that's all I used even when rangers were there. 10 names on the sheet with 100 sites available
2. Drove around for about 2 hours to find the site I signed up and paid for was taken, along with the other 60 sites we drove by
3. Worse, people had just pulled off the side of the trail and setup camp in the woods. Found out later that there are overflow sites available and this type of camping is allowed. Problem is, these idiots/morons/ass clowns had giant raging fires in the middle of the woods without the stone fire rings at designated sites, and they didn't even bother to clear the leaves away from their fire setup

I was super pissed about driving over 5 hours round trip to pay for a site that I didn't get, then couldn't find an alternative because the forest was full. Sent an email to DNR to complain and they said they try to drive through and keep and eye on things but with the covid restrictions there wasn't much they can do. I warned them that a forest fire may be imminent.

Went back last fall and it was fairly crowded again but was able to at least find a good site. Rangers thought it was already taken but I found it empty as I drove to the overflow site next to it. I went on a drive a couple of weeks ago and found it nearly empty - hopefully the craze of temp covid outdoorsmen is subsiding

No doubt cut from the same cloth as the folks in the red rig and the folks that get trampled by National Park bison.

I have no doubt truck was up to task. This is all pilot error starting with going on closed trail. Unfortunately not an easy fix solving for people making bad decisions putting themselves and others at risk.

 

Having been through Black Bear Pass several times, I can say it's easy to panic when you get in that position. It's a long way down, and very steep. You're right of course, none of those vehicles had any business on a closed trail.

 

That pic from front looks like plenty of room on up hill side where they are standing. Wonder why they weren't hugging the uphill more. I was watching a buddies video going thru this trail and remembered spots them hanging out window saying go closer still have 6 inches to rocks.

Did you experience anyone needing to pass? The trail looks so narrow in some spots. Your a bad ass. Nerves of steel.

 

The full pass trail is only accessible from the Million Dollar Highway (US550) between Silverton and Ouray. The trail is fairly tame until you reach the point going down into Telluride. From there it's one way only. I don't believe they allow entry from the Telluride side. So, the only need to pass anyone would be if they were stuck, like in this situation. There is no room for passing anyone once you start down on the switchbacks to Telluride.

 

My buddy was stuck on the trail for 8 hours everything backed up due to someone stuck and recovery happening.

 

I've heard plenty of tales of being stranded up there for hours, sometimes in a sudden snowstorm or violent thunderstorm. You can imagine trying to navigate that trail in pouring rain, with the trail washing away before your eyes...

 

I do disagree with one statement in that article...some of the staff at Jalopnik absolutely have PHD's in ass-clownery.

As for Black Bear Pass, I'd hike up it but I don't think I have the stones to drive down it (I don't like heights, it's an irrational fear. somehow I'm ok with it when hiking though).

Wow driving looks crazy I was had a flight into Telluride to ski a number of years ago and damn just flying in and out of Telluride had my nuts pulled in tight. It like landing at a 90-degree angle, just kidding but felt like it and same for takeoff felt like we were heading to the moon. The mountains are so tight around the town. So, driving down into Telluride I can see a butt puckering time.

 

SR5 so it’s missing those options.

 

Thoughts on us with the features if it would have gotten us out? The e-locker was important to me but ATRAC I have been surprised how much that helps not needing front locker.
