I have a 2022 that I picked up August 1st of last year with just over 10,000 miles and the paint chips in the front bumper are out of hand. There are one or two in other places as well. I’ve read about these having thin/poor paint issues but has anyone ever brought this issue up to the dealer? Figured I’d ask here before broaching the subject to them. I’ve had a lot of vehicles over the years and never experienced this before. Honda, Acura (I know it’s a Honda still!), Hyundai, Chevy and Ford and I’ve never seen this.

Front bumper as in the plastic? I've got super white and haven't really noticed anything other than bugs. I've had quite a few paint chips on the front edge of the hood but I fill with OEM touchup paint from time to time. I've got an AVS aeroskin I'm putting on next week that I hope fixes that issue and doesn't move it to the windshield

Yup, in the plastic. The paint is super thin and chips to reveal the black plastic beneath.

Yep see posts on Xpel PPF.

Agreed about paint does not seem as good of quality. Not sure if this is an environmental thing or what.

My Ford may not have ran and leaked oil but it looked good

Any possible history of an accident? Maybe the front bumper was repainted. I'd check the body lines carefully, clips, etc and make sure it all looks OEM

EDIT: DUH you bought it new. Sorry.

My 2023 white T4R just after few months seems to have 2 paint chips already at very front of hood. Paint seems to have chipped off very easily, no other signs of hard impact or don’t or scratch around the paint chip area. Found this a bit concerning. I’m guessing I’ll need to find some touch up paint now

Here's another recent thread on this subject:

    https://www.4runners.com/threads/new-toyota-paint-sucks.32267/#post-463047

I bought a 2023 in October 2022 and have several thousand miles on it with zero paint chips, scratches or blemishes anywhere. And I live in an area with higher than average construction, sheetrock and nails all over the roads due to reconstruction after hurricane Ian. Metallic gray color.

I am surprised people still buy vehicles without getting PPF done. I had the front bumper, grill, headlights, fog lights, full hood, full fenders, A pillars and roof line covered on mine. Modern paint does not stand up like it used to.

I know Toyota & Lexus white paint have issues and Toyota has a Paint Protection Extended Service thing. I had Toyota white paint vehicles but didn't have any issues for 5 years unless I hit something. Did not chip for no reason. But after seing the white paint issues I stop buying white vehicles. My next option was Classic Silver. I'm a light color lover to keep my vehicles little cooler than dark colors.

I bought my 4runner September of 2023. I also began to notice paint chipping. I brought it to the dealer and they told me that it was most likely road debris and they would touch up the paint for me. The paint chips continued to occur and get larger, but the paint around the edges of my doors, hood and fenders also began to wear away. When I brought it back I was told that they would look into it further and then upon inspection said that there was and adhesion problem with the paint. Toyota corporate is willing to re-paint the hood only, but are telling me that I caused damage to my doors and fenders somehow. I've brought it to multiple body shops for their diagnosis and all concur that the paint is the problem and that there is no physical damage to the car. They also said that and a clear coat would have made no difference because it's an adhesion issue. I am currently going back and forth with Toyota to get this issue fixed because it continues to get worse. These are just SOME of the spots chipping.

Definitely a paint adhere problem. Stay on them to make it right!

So far my 2018 Super White has done well, but it does chip easily.

Disclaimer; it spends most of its time in the garage.

One would think that after decades that by now car makers would have painting their vehicle down to a science and we would not have issues like this

I think the “science” is what’s causing the problems. Technology is allowing the manufacturers to apply a razor thin coat of paint.

    Newer isn’t always better IMHO.

That could be a contributing factor too. I had an 87 Mustang and the paint would blow off in big sheets going down the highway. During the 80’s car manufacturers were using water based primer. Didn’t work out. I complained to Ford and they told me there was a paint recall but my Mustang had too many miles to qualify!

Needless to say, that was the last Ford I ever bought. I’ve been a Toyota fan boy ever since.

I would not accept that paint job at all that’s awful. I would want a buy out or I’d get rid of it. Sorry to see this.

Do they really think that only those panels or paint were not prepared properly. Come on man

I just spoke to the dealership today. Toyota corporate is willing to fix the hood and the fender due to "poor paint" and the dealership is willing to fix the doors and the bumper, but they won't explain to me how they intend to fix it. I asked for the FTS report and was told they couldn't give it to me so I had to call Toyota customer care to request it who is now contacting the dealership to request it for me. I also asked them to provide in writing how they would "fix" and what type of assurance I would receive that the paint issue would not happen to any other part of the vehicle and they told me to take it up with Toyota customer service. They wouldn't provide anything. The service manager has now tried telling me that the dealership is willing to fix the paint chips caused by road debris even though they don't have to, despite them previously admitting to poor paint. They are now just going back and forth. I am so upset and super disappointed as this is my first Toyota.

This has been going on for ages with Toyotas. More than 20+ years, their paint jobs have been utter garbage.

Seriously disappointing that Toyota has not addressed this. Not all manufacturers have crappy paint jobs from the factory. Not sure why the hell Toyota can't right this wrong. Seen this happen too many times on Toyotas.

As a group of owners, we should really push the issue with Toyota to remedy this. I'd be willing to pay a bit more for quality paint.

Wonder if the quality is different on the trd pros with special colors like solar octane or voodo blue. Seems like they charge a lot more for the special paint

It's the same quality. The upcharge is for the different types of paint processes. Solar Octane and Blizzard Pearl are 2 examples of upcharges because they supposedly use a 3 stage paint process.

OP's paint looks like poor paint adhesion.

My 2020 mgm has pretty many paint chips. Mainly on hood, and a pillars. A few on the fenders. I touch them up with a matching paint pen. My old 3gen tacoma was silver and there wasn't a chip on it.

You might want to inquire as to whether or not this repair will end up on a CAFAX report.

My 2020 MGM has more paint chips than any other vehicle I have ever owned. And I have owned many since the early eighties, I think that says a lot. I even have chips on my doors and side body panels. It doesn’t seem to take much for this to happen apparently.

Seems like there's a issue with mgm paint. Odd because it such a popular color, used on every toyota vehicle.

I think so. I only had the 4 runner for a few days and got two paint chips on the hood, I hadn’t even driven it that much yet. I immediately ordered and installed the AVS bug deflector for some protection.

Water based paint appears to be the culprit. Knowing fully of the paint problems with the white 4Runners, I took my new Ice Cap TRD ORP to a place in San Diego known as “One of One”. They did the front clip (windshield forward) in Xpel PPL, along with the entire roof, as I will be transporting snowboards and surfboards up there, dragging them on and off. Then the rest of the vehicle with a ceramic coating. Finished with all windows, sunroof and windshield in a high quality tint. My first mod, expensive mod to boot, although I felt compelled to do this upgrade, due to the cost of the vehicle. This mod was done with 29 miles on the vehicle. This crippled my mod account dramatically. Months will pass until my wood pile gets stacked high enough for another mod.
