All, thanks for allowing me as member, as I've yet to buy a 4Runner. I'm currently an owner of an F150, and have recently become interested in the 4Runner (impressive quality, solid tank feel, reliability, etc, etc). Took a test ride in a 2023 TRDORP (incredible build quality for sure) and three things have my hesitant to pull the trigger; 1) the relative dip upon braking, 2) KDSS or not, and 3) the driver side fit/view relative to the steep angle of the windshield (I'm comparing with my F150 position in the driver seat), and also wondering about whether such a steep windshield tends to promote chipping from debris etc. I would also add that if I go through with a 4R purchase, I'm leaning toward a tint strip on front windshield. Of note, I am going to test drive a KDSS version (if its not sold beforehand) tomorrow to see what, if any, impact to the braking and ride etc. Of note - Heyward Allen Toyota in Athens GA is superb! Would certainly be grateful for any thoughts/feedback on any/all of these thoughts. My apologies if much of this has already been addressed. Thank you!

The 4runner suspension is a bit soft from the factory. The brake dive would be easily compensated for by swapping for stiffer front springs or a preloaded shock, which would also level out the front if you're interested in that aspect of it. I like the visibility of the windshield. Might be more prone to chips, but not as much as something like the FJ Cruiser, which is a common comparison vehicle since it's very similar to the 4Runner. Lots of info available on KDSS by searching. It's a good truck if you wont miss the bed. Most folks like me just run a utility trailer when you need something bulky. Good luck on your decision.

Welcome to the forum. I came from an F-150 5.0 and haven't missed it one bit. My single concern was whether the dog of an engine was satisfactory compared to the 5.0 that absolutely screamed. Installing a Pedal Commander took care of that. Seat Jackers took care of the somewhat uncomfortable seats. Coming up on 50K miles and never a chip. I did hit a flying duck full on which completely crushed the windshield, but that really doesn't count. Mine isn't KDSS so I have nothing to compare that to.

Welcome! The runner has you sitting closer to the windshield than a truck. Just a different and more efficient use of space. We’ve had runners and trucks for the last 20 years and despite getting runners most of the longer trip duties, never had a chip. Just different vehicles.

I’ve owned G-Wagens and a Defender, both of which had flat and almost vertical windshields. Chips weren’t an issue.

I just got my 1st 4Runner after driving a 5.7 Hemi Ram for 8 years. Found a Certified 2020 TRDORP with 16k miles. Definitely not as big, roomy, or powerful as the Ram, but you do get used to it pretty quickly. I do miss having the bed of a truck, but not enough to regret the purchase. Overall, it's damn fun to drive, goes where I need it to go easily, and the mileage is better than my old Hemi.

. Id say def do it, we all know which one will be more reliable and have better resale value. Or just trade in on a new f150 for a reasonable 65-70 k. I went from a 19 tacoma to a 21 4r, absolutely zero regrets.

Traded my 2020 xlt supercrew with 6’5 bed and 5.0 for a 2023 ORP

    1. Missed bed. #1 biggest thing. But I did not need bed every day, or week. I’ll be getting a trailer to compensate
    2. I’m 6’2, difficult to see traffic light changes if first in line. I look at reflection in hood
    3. Seats were bigger in F150, I find both to be comfortable
    4. F150 glided down road. Long wheelbase. 4runner rides very nice for what is, but it is more bouncy
    5. MPG I could never manage more than 16-17 in F150, I get 19-20 in 4Runner
    6. Reliability. It is what it is. 4runner is near or at top. F150 was not going to leave me stranded, but it had recalls, and was beginning to knock. They played around with ecu, minimized it, but I just did not want to deal with. So potential engine problems down the road and issues with panoramic sunroof were biggest worries
    5. Parking. Bought truck during Covid. I was teleworking, not driving much. Back at work parking was a real problem. Spaces were tiny.
    6. Aluminum panels on F150 - look at them and they dent.

I truly loved my truck and if it made sense to keep both, I would have.

Loss of bed was biggest regret, probably only regret, but a trailer will make up for that.

so happy with 4Runner, and knowing it will last for 3-400,000 miles makes me happy with my decision.

also, I have no need for kdss.

I took a rock hit from a gravel truck on my F150 within 1000 miles. Still chip free on 4Runner. Just luck in my opinion. Unless windshield is near vertical like older wranglers and cjs
