Hi everyone. I'm working on getting a 4Runner. Opinion needed.

Hi everyone, I'm new to the 4Runner community and forums. In fact I'm working on getting in as I don't even have one yet but I've found one that may be a possibility but want to make sure I'm not asking for trouble before I jump on it as it has some frame rust.

I'm wondering if you can give me an opinion on getting this 4runner based on the frame rust I see in the video that the dealer sent me. It's a 2008 Limited. I know these are prone to frame rust but I didn't know if this is too bad to even consider.

Thank you for your help and I hope to be a regular here soon!

    Welcome to the forum….

From what I saw from your video, the rust doesn’t look too bad. But when you have a chance: can you post a video of the front end of the frame including the lower radiator core support.

There are some nasty bits from the 10 to 12 second mark, looks like some metal has been totally eaten away and perhaps a fissure in some piece of metal but I'm unable to tell if that's part of the frame or just a protective metal piece.

I suggest having a qualified professional look at.

Thank you for your responses everyone. Here's some more information on it.

It's a 2008 V6 Limited 4WD, roughly 226,000 miles. Has lived most of its life in NY/NJ area and as far as service goes, carfax shows only 9 oil changes and following are the only significant things reported besides checks (like alignment checked, battery checked, fluids checked, etc):
    • Fuel filler cap replaced at 32K
    • Front brakes replaced at 58K
    • Serpentine belt replaced at 70K
    • Thorttle body cleaned at 143K
    • Heat shield secured at 151K

Yeah, I noticed that too. Was concerned about this fissure also. Was told by dealer that it's mostly surface rust or they wouldn't be able to sell it if it was more structural/frame damage or the sorts.

That's a Jeep JK (with the 3.8L minivan engine, no less), not a 4Runner.

Did you film the video yourself or did the seller send you the video?

^I'm curious what the story is. Maybe the seller sent a video of the Jeep to deceive @Amerkin5107, and the actual 4Runner's frame is a lot more rusted

OMG - Thank you 3JOH22A!! At first I thought that you were pulling my leg about it being a Jeep JK. I'm not into Jeeps much, so I thought JK was "just kidding" but did some googling and this indeed seems to be a jeep undercarriage. I did not film the video, it was sent to me by the dealer so yeah super shady. I taking gomiami advice and will run! Not sure I even care enough to contact the dealer telling them that they sent me a totally different undercarriage. It could have been a mistake but also could have totally been an attempt to deceive. What do you all think?
