Recently, I've been hearing a strange high-pitched fast chirping sound coming from the front driver's side of the vehicle. It's challenging to pinpoint the exact source, but it almost sounds like it could be related to something electrical. I thought it was coming out of the front speaker but I don't think that is the case. 4Runner has almost 36,000 miles on it, and I haven't made any modifications to it.

Interestingly, the sound occurs even when the vehicle isn't moving. While in "park." with the engine running it doesn't do it but if I shift to "drive" with my foot still on the brake without moving, it shows up. I can also hear it while the car is moving or at a light with a foot on the break but not moving.

I've recorded a short video that captures the sound. You can watch it here: https://www.loom.com/share/016a459fe7c942ed82ddad466187c817

I would try to get it to a dealer before 36,000 miles if the truck is still under three years since delivery.

My 2022 does this. Not all the time so the dealership has, twice now, played dumb. I think it’s in the AC vent. It’s intermittent and it’ll make that noise when I close the door with the motor running, also.

When it’s time for its next oil change, I’ll make the appointment and put that as a concern and make sure it’s documented. The service manager left it off last time since he couldn’t duplicate it.

That is good to know. I have an appointment for the dealer tomorrow so at least I can document before the warranty ends. I'll let you know what I find and if you find out anything as well, please let me know. I had a 2018 and never had this issue with over 75K miles. Wonder if this is a 2022 issue. Seems like QC, including Toyota, has gone down since 2020.

Does it do it at all speeds, or only when the rpm is low? The only difference between park and drive in the rpm drops. The RPM drop, while i find pretty smooth in the 4R, does have more resonance to it. Could be just enough to be causing something to rattle. It does have an electronic/interference type sound, but also could be a high pitched metal rubbing.

Giving the dealer something open-ended to look for hasn't turned out well for me in the past. If they go searching for it in this case, they'll rip out the dash and start spraying silicone lube everywhere if they really dont know where it's coming from just to hope they hit it. Then you'll have 3 other rattles when you get it back including the one they didn't fix.

Good point! It happens at all speeds and to be honest if the radio is on I don't notice it. I may just get it documented and not worry about it unless something stops working and it appears this could be the cause. I would hate to have some REAL rattles from them pulling apart the dash. Thanks for heads up.

I have the same noise on my 2021 sometimes. It’s almost like some wiring not secured. I hear it going over bumps. It’s a squeaky or creaky sound. It seems to come from behind the vent area deep under the dash. I just live with it.

Haha! Radio loud enough usually takes care of it. Seriously, though, I don’t want the same guy who missed the blown seal on my power steering pump to get to tear my dash apart looking for this issue.

Absolutely, and I’ve done it with Chrysler before. I’d like to give this dealership a chance to get it right before I go that route. And, probably most importantly, I don’t want my dash pulled apart until a bulletin comes out with detailed instructions which should eliminate tearing things out and poking around until the noise stops.

I suspect most of us are familiar with contacting motor vehicle companies. It’s just not something I’m choosing to do at this time. I’m still in my warranty period and don’t feel the need to take that step. I learned, when dealing with Chrysler, if you wait a little bit a TSB will most likely be issued and then the situation can be handled with minimal fuss.

    Lots…
Try new clips for your splash guards inside your front wheel wells. The plastic slides and literally makes a chirping like high pitch noise. Many on here have had the problem, even on newer trucks.

This! At least try it. It’s such a common noise source, it’s worth securing these a bit better just to have it done. Zip ties even work for the purpose.
