I was getting some violent shuttering in the wheel braking at higher speeds, like getting off the exit ramp on the freeway.Any ideas from anyone? Thanks.

Wow! I would take care of that first, then chase down the problem.

How violent is the shudder? Jeep death wobble bad?

    Get that spring replaced ASAP!

As far as the brakes, could still be warped rotors. Unless you used a dial indicator to check the rotors, a warp isn't going to be easily visible to the eye.

YES! That could create a similar effect during barking.

    Stay safe.

If it’s that bad, the death wobble probably broke the spring. I’d go down the line carefully and inspect the whole front end. Lower and upper control arm bushings, tie rods, steering rack and rack mounts, the u-joint on the steering shaft, etc. It sounds like more than the usual 4runner shimmy.

I recently replaced my front rotors, I bought Power Stop blanks. So far so good!

I honestly don't know how much difference there is between brands, my rule of thumb is to just not buy the absolute cheapest brand. If I've never heard of the manufacturer, I typically won't buy it.

As far as what to replace the spring with, I really don't have any suggestions. If you put it on 4 years ago and think you need to replace the whole thing, just do some research and figure out what best suit your needs. You mentioned Dobinson, I've never heard anybody say anything bad about them, so that's definitely one option for you.

I'll say though that. If I bought a brand of coil spring, and it broke under normal use conditions within four years, I most likely would not buy that brand again. Doesn't hurt to reach out to them though and see if there's any type of warranty.

Good point, if the shock has no damping left, the wheel could be bouncing up and down

The minute you discovered a broken spring, you should have been on the phone with whoever you bought that spring from (if you did replace the spring) to see if it would be covered under some type of warranty. Let us know what they say...

If that is an oem spring, check out the for sale section, or place a 'want to buy' ad on there asap.

You should address the root of the problem and stop barking in your 4Runner :homer:
Just replace the spring. It's a known problem with multiple coilover brands (King, Icon, early TRD Pro Foxes) - the last coil is closed and ground to a taper to be parallel to the spring seat. That causes higher bending stresses in the last coil.

Once you have the spring off the vehicle, examine the fracture surface. Most likely it has been cracked for a while (and collecting corrosion) until one final load cycle broke it through.

my bet is warped rotors. Ive been in some friends car and the rotor shutter was so bad I thought we were going to die. The spring though like others have said, get that fixed. Kind of wild though that your spring would break. Any recent mods?

Ive always put Bosch Quiet Cast on my cars and they have been flawless. Absolutely flawless. I pair those up with Akebono pads and im good to go. Asking the forum about rotors is like asking what someones favorite oil filter is. I know others may disagree with the Bosch but Im just telling you from my experience (2011 acura MDX) they worked flawlessly

^It would depend on what you replace them with. Looks like you have Bilstein 6112s? Anything without closed and ground coils will likely be a downgrade.

It’s most likely rotors. You measure runout in thousandths of an inch, you’re not going to be able to see it with the naked eye.

I had a significant steering wheel shake under moderate and heavy breaking that ended up being the good condition K02s I used to have.

Just gettin around to replacing the coils! The new ones are a bit beefier

ended up installing power stop rotors and that resolved the shuttering.
    Thanks!

Braking vibration is usually rotors. I have PS Z36 kit on mine and I haven't warped a rotor yet in multiple hard lock ups. I have used for 20 years on all my vehicles. I would use their carbon ceramic pads regardless or rotors.
