Gas mileage, What are you getting?

not sure what your 2003 weighs but I think the 5th gens are around 4800 so yeah she's a big girl. Kick the shifter over to 4 and see how it does, it "feels" to accelerate better and have better throttle response in 4. There is always the option of getting one of the Magnusson superchargers, I'm not sure if they are released yet but I know they were almost done a while ago. Either way welcome to the site

LOL!! Thanks for the response and the welcome. Yeah the gross curb weight of the 2003 is 4025 pounds. so alot lower.

 

the older T4R had 4.30 ratio . MY 2016 has a 3.73 . so a bit steeper.. 4800lbs curb wt... so when you drive it over 5K LBS.. heavy SOB...

 

After 6638 miles, am averaging 21.43 overall (keep track on an app). With the colder weather it has taken a hit, was averaging 21.9 when it was warmer.

 

What kind of terrain are you dealing with, ie, does this include going up steep hills etc?

 

14.5 or so right now, but thats in 4wd (slick roads up here), my wife autostarts it everytime, and only driven around town. It does get better in 2WD obviously, but not too far off from what I was hoping it would get.

 

that's where I was my last tank seems typical, my Tacoma would have horrible mileage around this time of year too

 

My wife has had her 4R since July (2017 SR5) and her mileage was around 19 or so then and now in the winter snow/ice and warm up time in the driveway she getting around 16. She loves the 4Runner but not the MPGs. She went from a 2004 Matrix 28mpg on a bad day to a 2012 Rav4 22 to 24 mpg and now the 4R. My Taco is getting around 21 in the summer and 18 now in the winter. Don't most people go with better mileage as they get older. Ha Ha . You'll never see my wife in a Prius. Fossil Fuels FTW.

 

I fail to understand those that post questions wishing to compare mileage - (Reminds me of trying to exact measurements using a 'Rubber Ruler') Here are some of the variables that make this kind of comparison and interesting but perhaps waste of time -

> Is Vehicle Stock or not? Lifts, roof racks, anything that increases weight will drive down mileage.
> Type of Tires - As has been stated by many, bigger, aggressive lug tires will lower mileage
> Type of driving - Jack rabbit starts are a mileage killer ...or is you ECO light always green?
> Terrain - Are you in the plains? (Flat Land) or hilly? (Going up hill requires more HP and consumes fuel)
> Elevation - Many vehicles will get better mileage at higher elevations.
> Temperature - Many have stated the impact this has.

Only when all of these (and perhaps other) factors are even can you make a comparison - Clay

 

this thread is really good on what these trucks get on MPG and the temps/terrain etc... then the use of higher octane fuels etc... 15-22 mpg is the range .. extreme mods on vehicle gonna loose on MPG results from this thread .

living in southern CAL lower MPG , less oxygen in the air... too much pot and fires smoking up the area..

 

About 7400 miles. Just calculated my MPG this morning after a fill up and I'm getting 19.2. Mixed city and highway.

 

PLEASE HELP. I recently did a 2k+ mile trip and averaged only 12mpg. Since getting back to the city little to no improvement. I have a AIRAID cold air filter that needs to be cleaned but other than that I can't come up with a reasonable explanation. I was averaging close to 16mpg before. I recently replaced the nitto grapplers with some Mickey Thompson Baja ATZ (Same size as stock). I have gobi rack that adds a little weight and TRD pro enchancement that lift the vehicle 2" from stock but I dont think any of that should be affecting things that much. Anyone have any ideas to what could be causing the poor mileage?

 

A sudden change like that might indicate an engine/emission issue but I would think the CEL would be on along with that. I've noticed around here, in the Northeast, the fuel blends change during the year for seasonal reasons and this reduces my mileage on the Tacoma a little but not that drastically. My wifes 4R is still pretty new so we don't have a long timeline to share. We've been getting 19ish mpgs most of the time.
Depending on your miles 40K maybe, not sure how much driving you do, it may be time for cleaning/maintenance. Throttle body, MAF sensor, sparks plugs but a sudden drop is strange. To me a sudden drop is the fuel put in the tank or a CEL problem in the engine.

 

Also maybe consider the area you are in or were in. Elevation could easily account for a change like that. Tire pressure changes ?

 

It wasnt a sudden drop from 16mpg to 12mpg but more progressive. I had noticed it was in the 14mpg range some time ago. I had got 40k mile service performed prior to trip so everything was checking good. New tires were put on then. I am planning to clean air filter and run some fuel injector cleaner in hopes that will help. My friend has unit with same intake around the same mileage with 285's and is getting 16mpg so I know something is up. I appreciate the insight!

 

Colorado Springs. We have some small passes that I go over once a month or so, only about 11,000 feet high or so. Constantly drive from 5k to around 6.5k. Some nice flat land would be nice, imagine my mileage would only be better.

 

I live in Colorado Springs and have noticed a 4 mpg drop in the gas mileage of the three 4th gen 4Runners my family drives due to the winter oxy-fuels we use.

 

04 V8 getting 13.9mpg. I notice I get worse MPG with Premium Grade fuel. I've heard about ECU tuners to increase the MPG, but would that actually work? I'm surprised the new 4Runner aren't getting 22+!

 

I've seen about a 2mpg drop since it got cold (and likely different gas)

 

the reason these get at the most is 21 MPG in perfect drives is the weight of 5,000 lbs .
toyota vehicles I have not found any tuners . so you have info on toyota tuners available ?

I have used 93-87 octane 10% alcohol top tier gas and no MPG changes ..
when cold below 40F 15MPG when 80F 20 MPG. same gas same drive.

 

Bought my truck up in Portland OR and drove back down to Los Angeles all day yesterday. It is an all stock TP except for BFG KO2's (size 275/70). It also has the Toyota bug deflector which may ding it a little. I'll probably remove it.

I drove it gently to coax as much MPG as I could. Literally set the cruise control at 65 for most of the way.

First leg, mostly gaining elevation: 19.0 MPG
Second leg, mostly losing elevation: 21.9 MPG
Third leg, slow trend from 4000 feet to 100 feet: 21.0 MPG

 

check change the rear diff gear oil ... probably over heated ..

 

Why do you say that?

 

these require break in.. first 500miles no long high speed runs .. short runs only.. this is because the gear teeth have to break in and then the metal hardens.

open the rear diff fill plug stick into it a white plastic stick / straw see if it looks like oil or coal...
I did the rear diff 3K miles .. looked bad asked others they stated this info also .. glad I did it NOT IN SERVICE MANUAL..

 

Bought it used with 15K on the clock. 1 owner in Portland, CPO truck.

 

check the fluids for condition all..on your oil change.

 

I have a 2014 limited. 65k mikes BFG AT tires and a tepui tent on top. About 8 Months ago I noticed mpg dropping slowly from 17mpg Every week or so it drops another .10 mpg and I am currently at 12.2-12.3mpg
I have changed oil, air filter, tire pressure and have not added or made any other modifications. Mostly city driving. I have done the math at fill ups/gallons used vs miles driven and computer is accurate.
Any ideas? I am not showing any codes for bad O2 sensor. Transmission fluid is clean. I appreciate any help!

 

Could it be a change in driving habits, or climate-related?

Can we switch vehicles for a month to get my mpg up? Haha.

I'm still doing ok @ 19.3 mpg, but I definitely get more efficiency in warmer weather.
