What brand of grease are you using on your drive shaft? I know it needs to be NLGI No 2 rated but didn’t know if you were using one you researched or is known for being the best

I know some folks like "Green Grease." I just use whatever Wallyworld carries.

Normally Amsoil red but Lucas red now. Any off the shelf NLGI-2 grease will work fine.

Do you guys think drive shafts are being greased if the owner is not doing it themselves? From my experience dealer or other oil change places don't do it. Every 5k and never any problems.

Castrol Pyroplex from the local big box store. It has good water washout performance.

The store previously carried Lucas Xtra (green), so I used that in the Tacoma. While a good grease, it's polyurea, incompatible and not intermixable with the more common lithium greases on the market.

At my local dealers, it's a separate chargeable service costing about $50.

I use two different greases, both from Amsoil, that are installed in two different grease guns equipped with lockNlube grease gun coupler, which I highly recommend. I use there synthetic polymeric off-road grease, NLGI #2 grease with 5% moly on the slip yokes and synthetic multi-purpose grease, NLGI #2 on the spyders.

I'm curious how many people are using lithium based grease, as spec'd in the manual. Some of the ones mentioned above don't seem to be.

Didn’t Tacomas have greasable driveshafts up until very recently. I thought I remembered hearing some surprise that the zerks disappeared one year to the next.

I’d be curious to know if those driveshafts are different in some way, or if it’s the same driveshaft, but just un-greasable. I would imagine a greasable shaft would be better able to endure corrosion in the spiders when used on salty roads.

I use Triax or Amsoil for the u-joints and Valvoline FS Moly for the slip joint and ball joints (SPC).

While we're taking about this, may I suggest using plastic caps to keep the fittings clean. So far I haven't had any come off on the road, either.

That’s laughable. Now you got a 19 year old doing it and I guarantee they aren’t cleaning the fittings first. Nope just push all that dirt and grit in there.

You probably won't have any come off either.
These caps are a worthwhile addition. As @morfdq mentioned above - the grease fitting should be cleaned before hooking up the grease gun. All it takes is a grain of sand or two and it will clog the grease fitting.
We use the plastic caps on the jets that I maintain. They stay attached to the grease fittings on the landing gear which is subject to speeds in the air over 200 mph.
