I watched the 2024 Land Cruiser reveal arriving in Spring 2024. The basic model is relatively inexpensive ($55,000). My overall impression is without modifications the Gen 5, 4 Runner would compete nicely. The approach and departure angles are not as good. 4 Runner has 33 and 26 degrees. Land Crusier specs below (31/22). 4 Runner ground clearance is 9.6” and Land Cruiser is 8.7”. All LC models have locking rear diff. I believe it has center locking diff also but not sure how that works. I assume the locked center is the same as the part-time system my ORP has when in 4 WD where the 2 driveshafts are coupled. Otherwise the unlocked center diff has slip capability for on-road all wheel drive, driving. The towing capacity of Land Cruiser is higher with the hybrid power train using the EV motor in series with the 2.4 liter turbo 4 cylinder. As an Engineer I believe an EV (no internal combustion engine) has fewer components to fail compared to ICE. When you combine both an ICE with the hybrid elements, it is the most complexity you could have. The charging system has its own support systems like dedicated cooling. And with the Toyota I-Force Max design inserting an electric motor in between the ICE and the traditional transmission, it couldn’t be more complex. It’s a neat design I agree. The jury is out on how reliable it is. I’ll watch with interest but am glad I have my 2023 ORP.

According to Toyota, the SUV's body shape and ground clearance give the Land Cruiser a 31-degree approach angle, a 22-degree departure angle, and 8.7 inches of ground clearance. Towing maxes out at 6,000 pounds.

It is full time 4WD like the 5G Limited. You can lock the center diff and the rear

Did anyone catch if it will be built in Japan? I haven't seen that info yet.

whats funny to me is how Toyota US is trying to pull a fast one and pass this off as the actual new Land Cruiser. It's not the 300 series. This is more like what the new 4runner should be. 2.4 turbo hybrid? The 300 has options of a 3.5 turbo gas, 3.3 turbo diesel and the best choice, 4.0 1gr. So now im thinking the 4r will either be dropped or just one of these things in a different set of clothes. However, I will admit, the 1958 edition with the round headlights looks damn good.

I kinda agree. The new LC could easily have been the 6th gen 4Runner, and most people wouldn’t have batted an eye. I still think the 6th gen is coming, but the question is going to be how much will it change from the 5th gen. If it’s a simple face lift (like the Tacoma got) with a 4cyl turbo +/- a hybrid, then there’s going to be a lot of similarities between it and the new LC. Maybe Toyota doesn’t care. Maybe they’ll take the 4Runner in a very different direction (more focused on off roading)

Who cares? This never shows everything anyway.
You and people making this argument realize that a lot of people are going to be put off by a $15,000 increase from one year to the next, right? While a lot of us aren't poor, we aren't exactly sleeping in a large kiddie pool filled with Benjamins either.

Well, me (and probably most other people) are talking about the truck itself as far as design, specs, etc.. Yeah, a jump in base price of $15k for the same model would be insane.

plus, this adds to the confusion about the 6th gen. It’s very possible it’s not much different than the LC, which makes you wonder what that extra $10k-$15k is actually getting you other than a different set of badges.

The LC does not have a part time 4 WD option. I believe the 6th Gen 4 R will. This alone would necessitate a 4 Runner that’s “different” than the LC. But I fully expect the more boxy upright body on the 4R. Give the 4R more ground clearance and better approach/departure angles and it will be different enough from the LC. It will be interesting to see the rollout of the 6th Gen.

maybe we’ll see the Limited trim dropped from the 6th gen 4R?

Maybe the 4runner will go back to being directly based off the current pickup, like it was in the beginning. With the same the frame dimensions and powertrains as on the new Tacoma.

I have heard suggestions that there will be a manual transmission 4runner. If true, it would be easy enough to take that straight from the manual Tacoma.

new LC heavily influenced by bronco and jeep, plus some spice of FJ. completely not DIY drivetrain - you will be stuck with dealership service. and who are designers of this? definitely american, not japan design. they trying to spread evenly all brands among consumers, effectively killing the best on a market. no wonder the brand nowadays written, otherwise all cars are look the same. big disappointment. that's why Toyota heavily market it right now, they are not sure, and my opinion it is a failure.

im happy i went with the 5th gen and the trusty na 4.0 V6. i have no interest in a forced induction 4 banger. i bought this truck for its reliability and there is no way a turbo 4 is going 200k-300k miles.

I briefly considered backing out of the deal for my new '23 when the LC news came out the day before, but I went forward with the deal because I really like the mechanical simplicity of the 5th gen 4runner. I am also puzzled by the reduced ground clearance of the LC. As with the new Tundra, I am questioning some of the decisions Toyota has been making lately.

So, you don't think Toyota can make an engine as good as Saab and Volvo have?

From what I understand they are rebranding it world wide, not just in the US and will be dropping the Prado nameplate (its already like that some places). Using the Lexus name moving forward for the bigger version. Just what I heard though.

Where do you see the Bronco and Jeep influence? Is it just because it's boxy? I really don't see it. Unless you want to consider just that it has retro styling cues as being similar to the Wrangler and Bronco. If that's the case, fair enough.

TFL did a great video where they went through all the previous generation Land cruisers, and pointed out different styling features. You really can see a lot of the previous generations in this new version. I actually think the design is fantastic.

I like it a lot, I'm not offended that we don't get the 300 because the 200 was such a failure for Toyota, sales wise. If people want to think of this as the Land Cruiser Prado, I think that makes sense.

I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with the next 4Runner considering the size and price of this vehicle.

The Land Cruiser has been available in multiple variations for several decades. The 300 series is only one version of it.

Anyone who thinks that the new LandCruiser is what the 4Runner should be is probably in the very small minority on this forum that actually thinks the 4Runner should be bigger. Most of the members here would prefer that it stays the same size, or if anything gets smaller as it used to be.

And, I had to laugh at the comment of the 1GR being the best engine option for the 300 series. Imagine taking the engine that half of the people on this forum will say isn't powerful enough for the 4Runner, and then putting it in a land yacht like the 300 series. Lol!

I’ll never want the already big 4runner to be bigger. The 3rd gen is all it had to be as far as size goes. And the 1gr is certainly the most reliable of the engine options for the 300. I don’t care about the speed of the thing. The 1gr is adequate power for the 5th gen but with a transmission that wants to upshift as early as possible and won’t kick down until you’re damn near flooring it, it’s going to seem sluggish. Because there’s no sport mode your only option is to use the shifter more

99.9% of the people who buy 4Runners don't care about any of that. It's a family SUV for them.

    Agreed, to an extent.

Based on how many people I personally know who own and wheel 4runners, I would say that the percentage of people who actually care about stuff like that is higher than .1%.

Also, giving it better off-road specs (ground clearance, approach, departure) would probably also make it more aggressive looking, which a lot of the buyers do care about.

You are probably right. But I use mine in 4WD weekly and several times each week in the Fall during hunting season. Ground clearance and off road capability are the main reasons I got one, switching from a Tacoma. Also felt the drivetrain was more reliable than Tacoma V6 and transmission

One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 34 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 32yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
    I think this is a boxy 6th gen 4R.
I bet the mechanicals will be the same.

I'd bet that the 4 Runner is getting a shorter wheelbase. The 80 series Land Cruiser had a 112" wheelbase just like this new Land Cruiser. Based on that, maybe the 4Runner will have a 105" wheelbase. :notsure:

Also, we might get an option for the 2.4 turbo/hybrid setup, but it's definitely not going to be standard.
