Anyone go from a Tacoma to a 4Runner?

Thanks Texas4runner!! I agree about the 4runner. I do like my tundra Pro. The other thing I’m tossing back and forth getting a Pro again or keeping the same color I have now and get off road premium and mod it myself. Yes the 4runner so much better to drive around tight spots especially. Yes there is a lot of room for passengers but their is also in the 4runner. I don’t tow and that is not going to change. Just not sure yet which way I will go. Man decision's. Are you doing any mods?

 

Yelp, very difficult decision. If your thinking about it your already part way there. It ate at me for many weeks, one day it was nope not trading the next was can't wait for it to arrive. I think part of my indecisiveness was time, I ordered my 4Runner around May 15th so I had a lot of time to contemplate my decision.

 

We went from Gen 3 2020 TRD Tacoma to 2023 Gen 5 4runner limited. Better gas mileage in Tacoma. The 4runner fits great in garage, so much more room. If I ever get a chance I will pick up 2015 Ge 2 Tacoma, I prefer the Gen 2, 4.0 engine and 5 speed auto over the Gen 3, 3.5 6speed combo. Other than that we already have a 2015 F150 Platinum FX4 that will take care of truck needs. If I sell the F150 it will be replaced with the Gen 2 Tacoma.

 

Going 2nd gen Taco to 3rd gen GX550 Overtrail+ count?

 

I have. The wife likes the Taco better than the 4R. I get to do the maintenance on both of them (Oil changes and little things). I have had taco's all my life and it is just nice to be able to throw dirt or yard stuff in the back of the bed without much worry of messing things up. We drive the 4R for long trips and overlanding - I tend to like the taco better than the 4R. I get better mileage on the Taco though. They are all both very capable vehicles and have their pros and cons. If I had to choose one, I would still do the Taco.....it makes me think of my younger days.

 

^ lately I've been missing my tacoma. Just having a bed to haul stuff rather then using a trailer. I'm going to a wait a little bit to see what happens to the price of a used tacomas then trade our outback in for a tacoma

 

I would still be driving a Taco as part of the fleet if they still offered a single cab option.

But with the 3rd gen Tacos being so long, I ended up just getting a full size pickup that's not much longer and has way more payload for truck stuff.

 

Funny you mentioned your mini trip. I'm in Waco now. Drove my 4Runner here from Kentucky.

 

When (if) you go to visit Magnolia Market in Waco get the cupcakes there yummy!

I had and '09 and '12 Tacoma, then an Xterra, a Frontier and now the 4Runner. I am considering going back to a pick-up in the next year, but honestly the choices are slim. I need a double cab long bed, so that only leaves the new Frontier and the upcoming Taco.

Honestly, a minivan or a Highlander mom car will just be way better, especially for the mom and kids

 

Yep, my son drives the Tacoma now, over 200k on it. It's been a great vehicle.

 

Went from a 2010 Tacoma TRD Sport 4WD Dbl Cab to a 2023 4Runner Limited about 6 months ago. Love the 4Runner - but like others have said miss the utility of being able to just throw stuff into the bed of the Taco. Thought I solved that problem when I gave the Taco to my son. Figured I would be able to borrow it if I needed to go get some mulch, haul branches/leaves to the disposal site, etc... Worked OK for 6 months (never borrowed it though) - but over the July 4th weekend he hit a deer with the truck. He was doing about 60mph, the deer jumped out right in front of him, no time to react/hit the brakes. Insurance company totaled the Taco. However, they did give him just under $19,000 for the Taco. I think I paid just under $26K for it 13 years ago. So the Taco retained ~73% of its value over 13 years/145K miles - not bad. My son used the settlement money to buy a 2023 Honda Civic Sport - which will be a better/more economical vehicle for him. I no longer have an easy to borrow pickup truck though. However, not a big deal - I have already hauled bags of mulch home and branches/leaves to the disposal site in the 4Runner. I use a large tarp in the back when hauling stuff like this and never got any dirt/debris that wouldn't just sweep off the rear compartment liner in the 4Runner. I am learning over time that I didn't really give up much utility going from the Taco to the 4Runner - and the 4Runner really fits my needs more than the Taco did. Plus, IMO, the 4Runner is a lot more comfortable to drive - especially on long trips.

2008 trd sport awesome truck In 2016 with 40,000 miles had to have frame replaced couldn’t believe it happened for the 2nd time.
2017 Cement TRD Pro 4Runner I did miss having a truck but love the way the TRD Pro is built and I’m glad I went with the 4Runner. It has 56,000 miles and Only replaced the breaks. I’m now considering selling it any thoughts on what it’s worth.

 

Shopped around for both, 4Runner for us and Tacoma was for my dad, he asked for my input on what I thought about them. Having driven multiples of both, if I had to have one or the other it would be 4Runner hands down. Overall comfortability and drivability of the 4Runner just couldn't be beat despite having that dinosaur of a drivetrain. So for now, we have our 4Runner ORP, I'd like to get into either a Tacoma or a Tundra some time in the future to have best of both worlds.

 

I had an 89, traded my CBR for it, the 22RE had a blown headgasket so I bought another donor truck with bent frame and swapped motors. Then, the 4R went up for sale and I sold my truck and got a three year loan for the rest. Suko, the owner of National Cable Construction ordered it new, then it was too high so she got a Mercedes.

 

I just did on Tuesday. What a difference!

 

I had a '15 Tacoma that I thought I would be driving forever but was totaled last August. I wouldn't recommend doing it this way but I'm in a '22 ORP now and wouldn't go back, it just fits the needs of our family so much better.

Wow that sounded like an extremely serious accident that you were involved in. A bit frustrating to see the driver only got 2 years. Feels like attempted manslaughter should have been added as another charge.

 

Thanks and yes, I was surprised that the driver who hit me wasn’t charged with anything related to my injuries. Sliders and skids were one of the first things I put on my ORP

 

Same height, and went from Taco to 4Runner. Rarely miss the Taco bed.

More room in 4Runner feels nice but Highlander better for kids. Easier to access the backseat area and more room back there when they start growing.

 

Same height as well lol. Wife drives a '22 Highlander with the V6. That thing hauls ass!

 

Had a 17 DC Tacoma for a few years. I liked everything but the powertrain (which is obviously major). Buried itself in 6th constantly, bogged, pinged, just a total POS to drive. Traded that for a Highlander. That was nice since I have young kids, but wasn't feeling the unibody. Every time you tow with it the interior resonates all the driveline forces/noises being applied to the unibody from the trailer hitch. Decided to try and manual tacoma (since I like manuals) and bought a 22 DC Tacoma. Much better than the auto, but the clutch pedal area really sucks. There's no way to wear boots or even a large shoe in that tuck since the clutch pedal is so close to the kick plate. It's a really stupid design and you can tell it was tacked on. Dealer offered me more than I paid for the Tacoma in trade a year later so I decided to go to the 4R. The only complaint so far is the AC isn't as good as some of my other vehicles, and the gas really does suck around town, albeit fairly comparable to the Tacoma.

6k miles later in my 22 OR, and dont regret it at all. The way it drives and how comfortable it is is not even comparable to the tacoma. Yes the mpg in town does suck but honestly its the same in essence as the tacoma.

 

I've had pre-taco Toyota pick-ups and went from a Nissan Frontier crew cab to a 4Runner ('19 SR5 Premium). Except for when I MUST have a pick-up (and I have a neighbor who will let us use his truck anytime), I don't regret it for a moment. I'm 6' and, except when I wear a Stetson, I have no problems=lots of legroom!

 

My two, love them both, like the 4runner better. I wasn't going to buy a 3rd gen, just don't care for it at all.

 

Never heard of a 6-speed 4R.

 

I kept the taco and bought 4R. Taco was great but like the 4R better. Just can't talk myself into getting rid of taco. First double cab Toyota made.
