I had the runner undercoated last year with waxoyl. The mechanic said it’ll last a while and gave me a can of waxoyl hardwax for touchups. I decided to check underneath for propeller shaft greasing and I found the joints coated with surface rust. Pics below. I’ve also texted the pics and my concern to the mechanic and awaiting reply. How serious is this? Do I just spray rust inhibitor on the joints and not worry?

    A few things of note...

That's solid steel, surface rust is going to take decades to ever do anything to it.

The part, like mentioned above is replaceable.

That area, like parts of the LCA's are essentially untreated and bare metal, and will rust.

I wouldn't take a second thought at that rust.

Model Year?. Why wasn't the shaft treated / greased.
I had seen the underbody of a LandRover (rust bucket) fully Waxoyl - looked nice. Unfortunately, the garage doesn't do any other models.

Glad it's not just me with the rust on my LCA's; haven't gotten around to brushing and resealing yet. Also some brackets near the front diff (maybe also the doff itself? Can't remember). Planning to assess at my next oil change.

I really wouldn't waste your time. LCA's are extremely thick steel. You'll wear out bushings, ball joints, and everything else on an LCA before the LCA itself is compromised to rust.

The OP does have the right to be concerned.
I had a 2012 Honda Pilot for 11 years. No rust on the propeller shaft. In fact clean underneath.
But Hondas not a reliable as Toyotas. Hence the switch.

If he wants to write a 10,000 page dissertation regarding underbody rust and part longevity, have it published and distributed coast to coast, more power to him.

My point is spending a bunch of time and money on a part that is relatively cheap and can be swapped in less than 30 minutes probably wouldn't make me lay awake at night.
