New Sherpa Sport Series Rack (7-24 Release Date)

They are going to release a more affordable rack: https://sherpaec.com/pages/lineup. It has a lower weight rating but could still work for a lot of people. Here is the video from their page:

So similar to the Westcott low pro rack. Makes sense. I think I prefer having the beefier one though just in case I need it. Buy once, cry once. Sherpa makes quality parts though so it will be cool for people to be able to get into them for cheaper if they don't have the funds for the Crestone.

 

Might have a look at that one, only gonna carry snowboards and surfboards (9.0’) so that could be the ticket.

 

going to cop one. the heaviest thing on my roof is my pop-up tent. will probably throw a roam box up there as well for tools when overlanding.

 

If you have a RTT and are thinking about a box with tools you probably want the Sherpa Crestone. I don't think this rack is designed for heavier weights and tents are usually pretty heavy.

 

my fault, I can see how that could mean RTT haha. Floor Gazelle Pop-up tent. Tools would just be some recovery gear, morrflate and some other light weight stuff

 

Perfect! I'm sure this rack will be a solid choice then! Unless you have bigger plans for the future, then I'd go with the Sherpa Crestone or one of the Westcott racks. Buy once, cry once haha. The best part about any of the quality racks is that you'll most likely get a good chunk of your money back if you ever want to sell it.

 

How much lighter will it really be? A 16th less metal on the side plates and one or two fewer crossbars isn't going to make that much difference. Even if you went from 50 to 25 pounds, you would only notice it when you were hoisting the rack up there. Pricing will be interesting though, and I like the slightly lower profile. The mount system they make is great, so it's nice they incorporated it regardless.

 

$949 for a rack that can't handle as much ... you can get the Westcott modular for $899 and have multiple options for setup or the low-pro if height is an issue and they will be able to handle whatever you put on it. I can't see the market for this rack after seeing the price. Too bad too as I'm impressed with the couple Sherpa parts I have had in hand.

 

I agree. also disappointing that they raised the crestone price by $350 bucks. passssssss

 

Can't agree more ... I got my Westcott modular and the Sherpa rubber mounts for less than the cost of Sherpa's budget rack I still do like Sherpa's products though and will end up trying some because Westcott doesn't make many accessories and I consider them the two best companies in this field.

 

Are the rubber mounting feet from Sherpa the same ones that come with the Crestone/Needle racks? Same sleeves and everything?

 

Yes. If you buy their mount kit and select the Crestone feet it comes with the rubber mounts/sleeves/brackets/bolts. I had also purchased their bonded washers too but ended up not using the washers, brackets or bolts.

*edit ... I actually can't remember if the bolts came with my Westcott kit or the Sherpa kit. Either way I reused the factory bolts and rubber washers as both looked beefier than what was in either kit.

 

what are the “floor inserts” on the westcott rack?

 

If you get the Westcott modular (the one I have, not the low-pro) you have the option to set it up basket style or to have all of the rails flush with the top of the sideplates (or something in between like mine).

It's not the easiest to see, but if you zoom in and look at my pics and where the bolts are along the side rail, you'll see at the front and back they are level with the top of the rack but it the rear portion before the last rail, I have a few that are set at the lower position. I'll raise them all when I get my RTT so it's all flush with the top, but for now this gives me a little portion that will make it easier (imo) to tie down luggage or anything else I throw up there.

This also gives you the option of setting them all (or some) of your cross bars at the lower level and using their floor inserts to create a full (or partial) flat roof that is level with the siderails. I haven't looked into why some people like this option as it didn't call to me, but it creates a floor above your rack that you are capable of getting up on. Someone else can chime in on why you'd want to. But the two options with the Westcott modular I believe is a huge selling point. The bottle openers are cool too hahaha

My only hangup I had with the Westcott was that I didn't like the use of silicone to waterproof it, which is why I bought the Sherpa rubber mounts. IMO this is the best rack setup you could get.

 

got it. Thanks for the thorough explanation. The pictures on the website have the inserts and yours do not. I have a sun roof so I don’t think those would be ideal.

 

You could always use them only on the back half, if you had a use for them. That is a feature about them that's cool, is that you don't have to use them all (or at all). Same with the cross bars. You could leave out one/two and I don't believe it would affect the moonroof at all. (someone chime in if I'm incorrect, but I believe this would be the same for all racks)

 

Yea. That makes sense. I don’t think it’s worth it for $600. The idea to make it stand up there a little easier is ideal but once again, $600 seems steep.

 

Yeah, they aren't for me but when you see them in person you can understand the price. They are quality and a lot of metal, possibly more that the rack itself haha. But my whole roof will eventually be covered with the RTT so the is no use at all for me.

 

Looking to purchase my first roof rack and came across the sherpa sport. Needing some help understanding the load ratings. I won’t be putting any kind of tent or real heavy items up top. Thinking more along the lines of some storage for camping trip and the Christmas tree type weight. I want to assume the sport would be enough but some insight would be appreciated!

 

The following are what Sherpa states on their site. These numbers are for what the rack can handle. As for the actual roof, I don't know if we'll ever have that number but look around and you can see what people have loaded. You should be fine with either but I would always go for the larger one just in case some day you have a need for more up there. If you aren't concerned about that, either should be fine.
