Hey all! I have been a 4runner owner for about 5 years now. I'm one of the folks considering swapping to a Tacoma or Tundra now. As I really want to build a pop-up truck camper setup like Project M by Four Wheel Camper, Bruin by ORU designs, or Hiatus campers.

I have been contemplating getting a pop top off-road trailer for dispersed camping for some time. However the model I had a reservation on raised the base price around 45%. So that made me rethink, I believe a truck camper is a better fit for 2 adults and a large dog. I like how you can stand up in them, they don't cost a fortune in comparison to trailers, and no need to worry about pulling something.

Plus I enjoy woodworking as a hobby and loading up things in the 4runner has become a challenge.

Hoping I can find a private party seller who wants to trade or sell a Tacoma or Tundra at a fair price.

Welcome to the forum. My other vehicle is a Tundra and gets used more than the 4Runner.

At the end of the day, get what can give you the most use.

You can still hang out here and keep entertained!

    Welcome!

Your wallet might take a hit, but for what you're describing a Tundra is going to be a better option. Taco has less interior space than a 4R, and the payload for the double cab will leave a lot to be desired if you're adding a truck camper (~1000 lbs, including passengers and cargo).

Edit: I have to ask, what will a truck camper do that a tent won't? You can buy a lot of tent + camping gear for much less than a camper, and you don't have to take it down every time you move the vehicle. That would let you stick with the smaller vehicle, too, if you're wanting to off-road.

Yeah the Tundra is a good point if I decide to consider the truck camper slide-in shell route over the more lightweight bedrail attachment style. However yeah the lighter bed rail camper attachments are 300lb plus gear and passengers would be within payload for Tacoma like you mentioned.

I was leaning more Tacoma as some way back forest roads get pretty gritty and tight in Arizona. However I have yet to fully understand what limitations I would run into versus a Tundra on those roads.

The truck camper means a setup that I don't have put up or take down (just a couple latches and hydraulics to push up the interior height - take a look at some of the example campers I linked). Comfortable bed with hard side walls. Place to chill in rain or colder weather. I'm tired of camping in a tent on a air mattress.
