Bought a new SR5 on Monday, the 29th. We have been talking about getting a 4runner for years...finally traded off the 5.7 Tundra.

We are very pleased with the 4runner.

We brought it home and locked it with the fob.....thought the chirp volume was a little loud, so after a little research found the path and set it to zero.

Now of course neither fob will unlock or lock the door remotely, and the panic button does nothing. Searched for others with the same issue and found this thread, so it's good to not be alone on this.

No solution offered yet from the dealer, and we haven't pressed them at all on it, but I did contact the sales person.

Will be watching this thread and will post when and if we get a fix..

Called the sales person yesterday. We went over the problem and no solution.

One test he had me do was, with the vehicle locked, stand 10 to 15 feet away then press and hold both the lock and unlock buttons simultaneously. After maybe 10 seconds the vehicle chirped about four times. This was with the door chirp tone set to zero. But, the lock/unlock buttons still had no effect individually.

So it would seem to me, the wireless function is working, i.e. the vehicle is receiving a signal, it just isn't responding to it, other than those four chirps.

Anyone try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes?

Has anyone plugged in an OBD scanner?

Carista has a free trial. Get an OBD2 reader and use the app. You'll be glad you did. It'll let you adjust all the "dealer" settings without having to wait in a dealership.

If going the dealer route skip the sales guy and go to the service center. Tell them what is going on and show them the picture from post #41 (https://www.4runners.com/threads/2022-4runner-key-fob-issues.25936/page-2#post-386034).

I have that picture printed so I can take it along.

I talked with the salesman before I found this thread and realized others had this issue.

Will post the outcome from the dealer visit, but I'm in no hurry. Locking and unlocking the door by touch really isn't that inconvenient.

I'm glad I read about this issue before playing with the settings. I'm happy to live with the chirp, which is much less irritating than the old-fashioned horn honking.

Hello everyone, first post here. Just bought a 2022 SR5P 4Runner a couple of weeks ago and have been frustrated with only the driver door unlocking with the fob. So today I took the time to dial up the menu to select "unlock all doors". While I was there I saw the "adjust volume of lock function" was set on 5 or 6 out of a possible 7 so, out of curiosity, I adjusted it to 7. When I got home and was walking in I hit "lock" on my fob and didn't hear the door locks cycle. I stopped and tried it again. Then I thought my fob battery was dead, so I went inside and got my spare fob. Same issue. So apparently I will have a trip to the dealer, too very soon. Mine has 10k miles on it.

I have a 2023 4Runner Limited, both Fobs stopped working after 1300 kms, finally brought it into a Toyota dealership today. Thanks to the thread I read in this forum, I advised the service advisor this seems to be an ongoing problem. He plugged in his scanner and said it seemed the car’s wireless function was shut off, took him about 10-15 minutes to reset it and now both fobs are working fine.

Just bought 2023 ORP 2 days ago. Today I adjusted the settings and both fobs stopped working. Guess I’ll be snowing my salesperson screenshots of this thread in the morning. How frustrating!

I ordered a Carista OBD II and it should arrive today.

Anyone try using the Carista to reset the fob/wireless system?

    Success!

Got a Carista OBDII reader through their web site. I'm using it with an ipad pro.

Plugged it into the 4runner, opened the app, and selected "customize". I was then directed to purchase the one year subscription. The first month is free and no charge if you cancel before the free trial ends.

With that done, back to the "customize" setting, then to "Locking:Automatic" which offered settings for wireless door locking, beep tone, lights, and volume. Selected "wireless door locking", then "enabled" (it was disabled), Save, and then logged out.

Everything works now using the fob, just as it did before. I did lower the volume of the beep tone to a #2 setting, using the OBD.

    Thanks to Well69 post #93.

Post #91 has the back story...

I'm sorry to hear that. I was lucky enough to read about it before my vehicle came in, or I might have been tempted to do the same.

it’s an easy fix, bring your truck back to the dealership and talk directly to the service manager. Shouldn’t take more than 10 mins to fix.

I scheduled an appointment. The master tech knew exactly what I was talking about, did three other ones over the past week. Said it would take about 30 minutes.

Yes. I believe it also will work with android devices.

I went to their site, https://caristaapp.com/en/adapter and clicked the buy now which redirects you to ECS tuning. Completed the purchase there and it was here in a few days.

In the meantime I had downloaded the app and was ready when the adapter arrived.

Once connected to the 4Runner the adapter then connected(via bluetooth) to the ipad through the app, and the app directed me to purchase the subscription when I tried the "customize" feature.

You can view many of the systems without the subscription, but to make changes you need to subscribe. First month is free if you remember to cancel before the month is up.

I had first bought a Bluedriver scan tool, because I have two older Toyotas, a 97 and 02 Land Cruiser. The Carista does not work with the older vehicles, and the Bluedriver does. But the BlueDriver does not allow you to make the necessary changes to the 4Runner that the Carista allows. So though the Bluedriver will read errors and system status, you cannot alter the factory settings.

    Hope this helps.

Yep. And it’s super easy to use with the app. Open the app and it’ll give you subscription options. Do one month but be sure to cancel before it renews. Might even get a free week or something for new users- not sure anymore.

Surprised a third party tool was allowed by Toyota Engineers to access native code for customization.

Update: second visit to the dealer with screen shots from this thread. The master tech/shop foreman was actually working this time. (previous visit the tech couldn't figure it out) Wireless was OFF. Super quick fix just like I told them all. They all thought I was crazy.

I had a similar experience, the tech refused to look at this thread since these forums are full of misinformation… funny how this thread saved me many hours of driving, frustration and shop time at a dealer many hours away :notsure: :)

Thanks for the info, placed the order and waiting it from the mail.

frustrating and makes me looks like an idiot when explaining the issue to the service advisor . Visited two dealerships today and both refused to look at my truck since Saturday won’t take walk in…. Show them the post and of course… they don’t believe the forum… set up the appointment for next Monday back to where I bought the limited… Will see if they can fix it before the Scanner comes…

it finally happened to me. Went camping so I turned the door locking chime to OFF. Once I got home, I turned the chime back on and later realized key fob did not work from a distance.
I really hope Toyota addresses and fixes this stupid software bug.

i brought it to the dealership yesterday and they’ve never heard of this issue so I handed them a printed copy of @antimadder ’s receipt.

they thanked me for it and jokingly said they should pay me for pulling to the service department with the issue, diagnosis, and fix to the problem. They were really cool about it, never questioned me and went straight for the suggested route to fix the issue.

Just wanted to give everyone some info... I picked up my 2023 TRD Offroad Premium last night and immediately broke the key fobs. 23 miles on the clock. I unknowingly turned off the wireless by adjusting the buzzer volume. I was able to fix it myself with a MAC MDT10. Pretty much any high end scan tool (Mac, Matco, Snap-on) should be able to do this. Special tests>Body control module>wireless lock. I was also able to turn the buzzer back on in the same BCM menu. I know everyone doesn't have one of these scanners, but most independent shops do and some of those techs would probably help for a 20. Just another option if you don't want to be belittled by the dealer for 3 hours while they figure out what you already know.

Thanks to this thread I was able to determine we were also experiencing the software issue after the wife adjusted the tone and unlock settings. She took it to the dealer this morning and very specifically explained what the issue was and what caused it. Of course they didn't believe it and wouldn't listen, also wouldn't look at any proof we had to support it. They took two hours and determined the receiver was turned off, then charged her $80 to turn it back on. I called and asked why we were charged and was told because we caused it to not work. I then spoke to the service manager who also said he'd never heard of this issue and that there aren't any service bulletins over it either, but he would reach out to a Toyota engineer and see if they had heard of it. I asked if it was a reasonable assumption that we should be able to adjust the door lock settings without it adversly affecting the system. He said it was but without proof from Toyota he couldn't reimburse the charge.

So my question, has anyone seen this proof from Toyota that I could provide to them? I have a feeling they aren't going to look too hard.
