Purchasing a new 4Runner need advice

Hi everyone.

I am in the market to purchase a new car and had my sites set on a 4Runner. I was looking for good highway and around town vehicle. Two yellow Labradors that are with me most of the time. I have a boat that I launch on boat ramp every weekend here in Florida (appox. 3,500lbs.) First test drive 2018 Limited 4x4 and was not thrilled with the feel. Second, 2018 Off Road with no options, and it was better. Third, 2018 Off Road Premium loaded with KDSS and felt even better. I am trying to figure out which model to buy. I will probably never be off road but need the 4x4 for the boat ramp. I was thinking of getting the ORP w/KDSS but wanted to know if it was more maintenance and problematic than base 4x4. It was also a thought that the ORP would be more desirable for resale when that day comes - probably three years or so. Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

 

Hi, I'm a recent member after recently purchasing a TRDP. I looked at a few trims but limited was never on my radar. If you're looking for something to last approximately 3+ years I'm thinking you're going to get no complaints or warnings about KDSS. It adds mechanical complexity but if you're not going off road there is little chance it'll be knocked around by something and if you're only owning it 3 years it should not pose any longevity problems. Before I settled on the Pro without KDSS I was looking at an ORP with KDSS and I did the research. Those who have it seem to love it, and there were people who had taken their 4Rs north of 100k miles and not experienced any issues. I certainly noticed a difference in highway driving...it was much more planted. If I wasn't going off road I'd have an ORP with KDSS.

 

I have a limited so my information is based off of research. Im sure someone with that actual model could give more information. From my understanding the KDSS acts as a movable sway bar helping with articulation when off road. If you're not going to off road the vehicle than sounds like a ORP w/o KDSS might suit your needs better and save some money. The ORP is an amazing model and has all the bells and whistles. I'm sure the locking rear diff will also come in handy launching a boat when the car gets its feet wet.

I have what is now the TRDOR premium with KDSS, I love it on the highway, I keep thinking something that weighs this much should not be this pleasant on the highway in the turns. If you're only looking to keep it 3 years I can't imagine anything you would run across for problems. my Dad bought a limited and it a much different ride, a bit to harsh for my liking, mine is just a softer ride overall. Cant wait to see what you go with

The KDSS is kinda the best of both worlds, less body roll in the corners on road and better articulation off road if you need it, for me money well spent.

 

Should not have any issues. The rear diff on these is best to be used every month or so, but no real maintenance differences. Get the one you like the most!
