After it finally stopped raining, I tried out my new Luno mattress. It's a huge thumbs up for fit comfort, and speed of inflation and deflation. With the included 12V pump, it takes about a minute to fill or empty. It empties completely enough to fold up without a secondary air expulsion by pre-folding and pre-rolling. The thickness makes it quite comfortable even without a leveling platform (mine isn't done yet). It stows quickly. The material is beefy, so I don't expect much risk of puncture, although it includes a patch.

I'm slowly but surely getting road trip ready.

I looked at so many options for a mattress that I didn't decide on anything and gave up. Then, a week before a cross country camping/driving trip I remembered I needed something.

I contacted a local shop that makes beds, had them cut a custom shaped piece of high quality 5" foam, and cover it with a properly fitted, quilted mattress cover. Probably the best $250 I've spent

Did you pull out the bottom of your back seats?

What are folks experience with the Deepsleep Overland and the Luno Mattress? I like both and have been leaning toward the Deepsleep overland because it's cheaper than the Luno setup.

Also considering a Lost Horizon mattress: AirSoft4.5 Self-Inflating Camping Mattress Double– losthorizon.life

@backpacker I did, yes. Another member on this forum mentioned pulling the seat bottom and putting a very specific size of rubber made bin in the hole, so that's what I did. It was a tad tight, length wise, for me to lay down with the seat bottom just flipped up.

The seat bottom lays on top of the mattress when I'm driving, and then sits on the front seat when I'm sleeping. I only did that because I do end up hauling additional humans around when I get to my destination, so wanted to keep it with me.

I just got the Luno mattress and I really like it. Setup and teardown are fast and easy, it's really comfortable, and it fits perfectly.

Which bin was that? I plan to do the same thing.

Not for me. It is pretty thick, but I wouldn't want to speculate on how dog-resistant it is.

Finally ordered the extruded aluminum. Progress. Now to pick the wood and build Phase 1 before the first trip of the season at the end of the month

At almost 6'7", I can comfortably stretch out in the back when sleeping.
    - 2023 TRD OR
    - 4" queen size tri-fold mattress
    - custom-built sleeping platform (back half includes storage drawers and stays in all year. front half is removable sheet of plywood.
    - 8" extension since the queen mattress isn't quite long enough

The height of the platform brings the top of the mattress slightly above the wheel-wells so we get the full mattress width. The mattress was cut to fit around the wheel-wells. I would like to have more height, but getting the full width was more important for comfort.

We remove the rear seats (lower portion) when setting it up for sleeping and put the front seats fully forward to use the extension. As long as the rear seats aren't needed, only the extension needs to be removed to drive.

My 4runner is also daily driver. My camping is solo and I found a cot that fits perfectly.
My DIY rear window screens and sunshade awning complete my rig. Having the rear seat up beside the cot gives me comfortable seating and makes it easy to roll onto cot for sleeping. The layers of thin pads makes cot warm and soft.
