We have 3 kids who take the second row up so looking for ideas for the rear area for puppies safety and comfort. Would be cool if they made things easier for me too haha.

    Thanks in advance

There’s plenty of barriers and you can use a harness with safety leash on one of the hooks on the floor, but your biggest issue is being in Arizona…there’s next to no airflow in the rear.

Yeah, she will definitely not be left in the car. Been thinking about getting a fan for camping, this may be a good reason to pull the trigger now.

My daughter has miniature dachshunds and they ride in a fuzzy basket like thing that is fastened to the console between the front seats. But unless it is a small dog that will only work for so long. With my daughter, full grown, no problem.

I always transported puppies in a travel kennel. It’s safer for them and you as well as cleaning up. At about a year and training I let them ride wherever they wanted.

We have two dogs who ride in the back, one loves car rides and the other hates them. The one that hates it goes in a travel crate that I cut a hole in the top of and installed a small desk fan. The fan plugs into the inverter, and draws air into the crate and blows it up at the ceiling, which also circulates air really well for the other dog who lays on a blanket next to the crate.

I know it sounds kind of janky, but it works well for us, and alleviates my concerns about temperature and air circulation.

This^^^. Unfortunately my Greyhound is too tall and lanky to fit in any kennel that will fit in a 4R, so I fold the back seat bottoms up and put a platform to make a flat space for her. She wears a harness anchored to the grab handles in case of an emergency. My daughter is grown and flown, so the dog gets the back seat.

My pointing griffon rides in back with no problem. Does your rear window roll down? On the way to the gym, we got behind someone with two goldens. He had the rear window down about 1/3.

Make sure to get a lot of chew toys, stuffed animals etc for the dog to chew on and be stilumated with so it's less likely to chew in furniture, remotes, etc.

Leaving the 4R tailgate window down on most T4Rs can lead to a carbon black roof liner and maybe a poisoned dog from exhaust fumes, TRD Pro with side exit exhaust largely eliminates the problem of fumes in the trucks negative pressure area and some get a muffler shop to modify exhaust to side exit on the other models before subjecting rear passengers to fumes.

I have a beagle who unfortunately hates car rides. I've found the only thing that keeps him from making diarrhea and puke in the car (sometimes the trifecta, with pee too) is to:
    1. Stop about a mile after leaving and let him shit his nervous brains out
    2. Open sunroof and back window for him to take in the smells and get some fresh air (maybe the exhaust if you believe some of the threads?)

I've tried passenger seat with windows down (fresh air) so I could pet him, back seat with fresh air, and rear cargo with fresh air. He makes it longer (although after about 20 minutes on back roads he'll get sick even in the back) when he's in the back cargo area with the window down

I can confirm road grime on roof liner. Have not passed out (or have any kind of passenger pass out) due to exhaust fumes

One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 34 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 32yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
Get a crate…..puppies are not poo trained.

I transport my lab in a dog kennel, with a ratchet strap over the top, just to keep in place, not for crazy maneuvers. I have a pair of USB fans zip tied to the front door plugged into the rear 12v blowing on her, she seems to pant less.

I have a 6 year old english bulldog, I try to take him with me everywhere I can. My solution won't work for the OP but maybe for some others following this thread. Chubbs has the area right behind the driver seat. I made him a custom platform with a dog bed. My daughter made a cover for the center console. I have one of the AC vents blowing between the seats and the two vents on the back of the center condole angled up so he gets plenty of air. When hes in the wifes Bronco Sport he gets the entire back cargo area and a fan moves air back to him. Personally, I think he prefers the 4runner ;)20230708_131613.jpg

ive got two mals that travel with us a lot and i have this setup: ruff rugs including the inside tailgate. the barrier was not cheap but is securely attached and does not rattle which was my first concern.

Once had a 20 lb capuchin monkey bounce all over the inside of a '59 Chevy wagon on the Harbor freeway in L.A. late at night @ 65 mph.

    Don't ask!

would not be a bad idea but we give them around 35K steps every day so by the time they are loaded up they either chill out and eat their bull sticks or stick their heads out the back window and bark at cars.

I used to have my puppy in the 2nd row and with new baby now she goes in the back. I keep the doggy covers in the back seats so I'm not worry at all for dropping food/snacks.

Both seat covers and cargo cover is from Amazon.

Puppy goes in crate in rear. When grown I belt them in the backseat with a harness so they do not become fur missiles in an accident.

I don't have kids though, just dogs.
