For those waiting to purchase, I've seen two posts so far where people have paid well below MSRP. ($2700 and $3400 below MSRP)

One was from Sunnyvale Toyota (didn't confirm via their website) and the other was from Klamath Falls Toyota (I confirmed they were advertising $3400 below MSRP).

Don't know any other details, but figured I'd pass along what I saw...

Back to your regularly scheduled program.

I will be at a dealership on Tuesday to discuss a Pro that’s inbound. I won’t be paying over MSRP though let’s see if I can pay under MSRP.

I’ve seen the same thing. Hoping all goes well (still waiting on it to arrive at the dealership) but looks like they’ll honor a $4.2k discount on a brand new TRD Off Road premium!

Meanwhile, in the Southeast, I'm seeing Toyotas at the dealer with sticker prices $8-10k above MSRP...

And my favorite: a 2007 FJ Cruiser with 219,000 miles listed for $17,995. It was pretty clean, but still. I don't think it even had Atrac or a locker.

So I know a bit about Sunnyvale. They are one of the only Toyota dealers in California that consistently offers good prices and usually their arrivals are gone within 24 hours. Pretty straight forward and good to deal with. They have had a good reputation for a long time now, my family is a three generation customer of theirs.

However, their listings on aggregated sites like cars.com are not always up to date. I know some of their listings were still there weeks after they were already sold.

So their prices are not what we would call representative of CA market as a whole, they are more of an outlier of exceptional dealer that keeps vehicles moving at a higher rate than anyone else. If you see a listing with them, better call ahead and act fast.

Please note that I do not work for them, nor am I affiliated with them beyond being a paying customer. YMMV

I console myself for paying MSRP when I consider that the dealer gave me a trade-in value on my Jeep of $5k over my original (used) purchase price. Otherwise... :(

That’s technically better than the deal I’m getting! But I don’t have a trade in so I’ll take it lol. Should be worth the same or around the same a year from now.

Got my 4runner at sunnyvale right before the shortages and proces went nuts. BLack Friday. 250 off MSRP. No reservations. We got there before open and stood at the door. Made sure the manager knew we were there first. 3 other people showed up within an hour for the super white ORP non-KDSS.

It was the happiest day of my life. I remind my wife constantly.

We had been looking for a couple months and I was about to fly out of state to get one.

...and then there's Capital Toyota who wanted 5-7k above MSRP on any 4runner or Taco pre pandemic

You youngins out there if you ever need to negotiate for a car you do it like this:

(first off you need to let yourself know. Not think, but know that it's just a car and you do not need it. You especially don't need this one. There's a million others out there. You need to get good int he head with that because if you look nervous AF they're going to call you're bluff.) Also it needs to not be a bluff. You need to leave if you don't get the price you want.

they want to take information, ask you how much money you make, run your credit. Tell them no. None of that matters until we get to a price. You're not wasting your time they don't even need to know how much money you're putting down until you get to the right price. "That's all financial BS we'll figure out if we can get to a price"

You need to look bored and a little annoyed but respectful and blunt. Right to the point.

"I'm not buying a car for 6k over MSRP the same way I'm not going to ask you for 6k under. I'm a buyer at MSRP. That's the long and the short of it. If you have to sell it higher, I'm not your buyer."

The rep and I went back and forth twice. He got his manager. The manager and I went back and forth three times and within 30 seconds we agreed on MSRP.

"It's MSRP. That's the only price. I already told that to to yuor rep. We're still talking so you want to sell it at MSRP. If that's not the case I appreciate you showing me the car and I'll go buy one elsewhere."

They of course didn't have the truck I wanted and then I got a 4runner from Sunnyvale.

Here's a Taco Pro at Capital last week. Only $15,995 over MSRP.

Not only that. These guys didn't have the truck I wanted and call me back a week later and say "come on down we got your truck" I show up and it's the wrong truck.

"I go hey you remember I said i wanted the short bed right? "
-no I thought you said long bed
"No remember I said short bed because you wanted to sell me a long bed and I said short bed because they're better off road. We discussed why that is and everything. I know you remember that, right"
    'yeah you did say that'
    "then why am i here?"
and he just stared at me.

anyway I'm just venting. There was some other stuff too that ticked me off. I dont like people over at capital. I can't wait for the real recession to hit and go in there and haggle the manager down below MSRP and then tell him I'm just fucking around because they were ass hats to me in the past.

I was looking at a TRD Pro there a few months ago (I go there for parts for the 4Runner) and a rep asks if he can help me and I tell him yeah get the price down to MSRP and I'll buy it. He laughed and walked away.

I got my best deals at:
    1. Autonation Toyota in Hayward
    2. San Francisco Toyota
    3. Freeman Toyota in Santa Rosa

The ones that consistently gave the worst deals whenever I checked with them were:
    1. Victory Toyota in San Bruno. Also their service department was terrible to deal with.
    2. City Toyota in Daly City
    3. Putnam Toyota in Burlingame. However their service department was excellent whenever I needed warranty repairs.
    4. One Toyota in Oakland. They advertise themselves as no haggle dealer even though their prices are high.

I was the post at Sunnyvale. I was in contact with them about the 4Runner and they had a customer cancel due to financing. Sales rep called me with the discount and bought it next day. They just don’t get a lot of inventory.

All the dealers in SoCal wanted MSRP or up to 5k more for a ORP. Huntington Beach Toyota wanted 15K above MSRP for an ORP with TRD pro grill and valences.

I went out of state to get my 2022 because all the CA dealers wanted extortion-level prices a year ago.

Happy to take my money elsewhere, and met some good folks along the way.

The funny thing is that some people are still paying over MSRP. They are happy with the deal because they negotiated the dealer down from $15k over to only $2k-3k over. They will keep these shenanigans up if people are willing to pay up.

I love what Thacrow mentions about waiting until things are back to normal, going to a dealership and negotiating for a new vehicle with absolutely no intention of actually buying. Test driving, sitting at one of those stupid desks for an hour talking about features, asking to see a buyers order then test driving a different one and negotiating even more. And at the end telling them “MADE YA LOOK!” and walking out. I’m in and I can’t wait.

I'm in Kansas. My wife has an ORP stuck in Oregon at MSRP. She told them at the start of the conversation that if they weren't at MSRP we would walk and my wife actually stood up when she said it. They immediately dropped the $5000 up charge. They offered her $3000 for her Infinity and she sold it two days later for $7500. All of that happened 5 weeks ago. I have looked for on in stock and get the same +$5000 from dealers in KS, OK & MO. One dealer in MO told me they had one in stock but wouldn't sell it to me because I wasn't "local". My wife is going in Monday to finish the paperwork and they will give her a loaner car at no charge until the 4runner gets here and, if it doesn't get here before the first payment is due, they will make the payment. Buying vehicles has changed sooooo much!

Got my TRD PRO from Sunnyvale at MSRP at the height of the gouging. Took about 6 months on the waitlist, but no funny business; they even picked me up at the airport (flew in from SoCal just to avoid overpaying).

That's probable the deal of the day for sure, or should I say years. Good for you! That's even better than discounts pre-plandemic.

I was waiting for them to throw on some BS accessories or other fees but they were straight forward. Came with my own financing which helped.

I could fly direct from SLC to San Jose for $140 and take a leisurely weekend driving home. Worth serious consideration.

This was basically my attitude when I bought my 2019, except that I got about $3,800 off MSRP, and, I think about $2500 over Blue book for my trade. I almost walked out twice. It was nice to finally get a good deal on a vehicle.
